Teeth Has anyone had their puppy's teeth cleaned at the vet yet? I am a super dilligent tooth-brusher...but she still has some plaque. I'm going to wait another month or two b/c I am still waiting for some double baby teeth to fall out and if they don't I think they can pull them during the cleaning. They put them under to do the cleaning right?

| Yikes! Are you supposed to do that?! I brush my babies' teeth, but I've never had them professionally cleaned. The vet has never even mentioned this to me! I feel like such a bad mommy!

I heard you should do it when they are a year old. I have a store here who brings in someone once a month who does it without anesthesia. I think that is better for the dog.

I have a couple that need their teeth clean yearly while other have never got their teeth clean at all. I don't do it yearly, I do it by a need to do basis.

Teeth Cleaning I had Maggie's done a month or so ago...after nearly 4 years, so not to bad. Yes they did anesthesize her to do the procedure. And, yes they did do full blood work on her prior to anesthesizing her. I don't necessarily think it's something which needs done yearly. The vet does, however, need check the status. Yorkies have a REAL problem (as a breed) with tooth loss due to decay. (The teeth are just so little, it really doesn't take all that much for the enamel to be ruined).

It's something that is done on an as-needed basis and yes, they do anesthetize them to do it (at the vet's). I cannot even imagine how someone could do it otherwise. Anyway, you want to be vigilant about their teeth, because bacteria (placque build-up) can cause other problems.

Chloe and Lacey have their teeth cleaned by me at least twice a week. I started handling them right away, gently messing with their mouth, paws, face etc. I use a little, soft toothbrush but tried the plastic one that fits on your finger too. I have better control when I use a toothbrush. My vet says their teeth look good, but they are still young. Lacey had 3 baby teeth removed today, I just picked her up. She's a little drugged looking to me, sleeping a lot but otherwise seems ok. I don't like that anesthesia stuff but I guess it was the right things to do at 10 months, vet thought her bite could be affected. It's over at any rate. When they have their semi annual checkups, it is one of the things we check out to see if more extensive cleanings are needed. So far, so good.
