I think I may have a problem.
When I took my two to the groomer today, the lady who usually does it (actually the owner) was off and someone different did it. For some reason, I decided to ask the receptionist how they were dried. She said I'm new I don't really know. So not liking that answer I went into the room where they clip them and asked them how they were dried. She said I'm not sure they wash & dry them in the back. I said well, what kind of dryers do you have and she said well they are big commercial dryers. I said do you mean cage driers and she said well we have both kinds. So I asked well how were my dogs dried. She said I don't know it could have been one of the cage dryers.

Sounds like a lot of people who work there don't know anything about the place?

I agree with the person that posted above...and if they DO use the cage dryers, I wouldn't take your baby back there. I've heard HORROR stories about those things

Never, not a chance would I ever let Ellie be dried like that. I have heard that it is a good tool if you know how to use it right. Who decides if the person is using it right? I have also heard reports (don't know if they're true) that the dog can be left in there for up to 15 minutes.................no way. What if your dog got overheated in there? I think it is a good thing you asked them.

It is a cage that the groomer puts your baby in after bathing them and a big hot dryer blows on them to dry them off. They use these because they are easier and quicker (the groomers don't have to take the time to actually dry the dogs themselves). I have heard several AWFUL stories where the cages have gotten too hot, and the groomer had actually forgotten about them and the babies were basically burned to death

Just AWFUL.

After I talked to them, I called the place where I board mine when I have to leave them & asked them if they used cage dryers when they groomed. She said they did both. She said they wouldn't cage dry mine though because they were too small. I would have felt better if she had said no we don't use cage dryers at all. It really makes me scared to take them anywhere. Little Bit is a big (well 5#) chicken and I'll bet she is scared to death if they leave her in one of those things.

It's where they attach a dryer to the cage & just leave it blowing on them until they are dry. Problem comes when they leave them too long or don't check on them.

I would never allow anyone to use a cage dryer on one of my babies! Alot of times they are inexperienced in using them.

Not all cage dryers are bad. You are all thinking of cage dryers that blow HOT air (or warm air). Yes, these can be very dangerous - the dog can get overheated and die. There are also cage dryers that blow cool (room temp) air. These are safe because the dog does not get overheated because the air isnt warm. Most groomers use cage dryers on some dogs (not all breeds can be cage dried - like poodles because their hair will kink up so you have to hand dry it out straight). So instead of asking only if they use cage dryers, ask what type of cage dryers do they use...what temperature of air do they blow. Most shops will even show you the back room where the dogs are bathed and dried so you might even have the opportunity to feel the temperature of the air yourself. But most groomers don't hand dry EVERY dog that comes in its shop - most use cage dryers on a lot of them and then finish them up by hand drying. A lot of them will give you the option of hand drying though so if it's that important to you, ask that your dog be hand dried. But anyways, just wanted to say that not all cage dryers are dangerous - only the ones that blow HOT air.

To the OP - the people at the shop you went to didn't sound like they had a clue to what was going on. Someone should have been able to answer your question about how your dog was dried.

I use a cage dryer that only blows air... no heat... My dryer is out in the open and you can see from the waiting area . I do place most dogs in the kennel with a dry towel (because most of them like to rub themself dry).
A long tube is attach to the outer wall of the kennel that blows air.
Most of your larger grooming shops are like a assembly lines.
One grooms, one does feet and nails, one wash, one drys, They are their to make money nothing more.
I had a friend fired because she refussed to hold a dog down to shave its belly.
But, I do believe a personal groomers that
works at home, in a vet office or moble unit seem to be the best for your pet.
(that is my personal believes)
People that want fast grooming need to go to the assembly line type of grooming
I ask for at least 2 to 3 hrs depending on dog .
Sometimes the owner comes before they are dry and helps dry. and then sometimes they come and see there pet on my lap being loved.

the groomer I use sometimes has both. i tell her I do not want my dogs in the cage dryer and as far as I know, she hand dries them with a blow dryer. she pretty much does what i want her to do.
