| Proud New Daddy. Hello everyone my name is Chris and Im a proud new owner of my first Yorkie or dog for that matter. We just got her yesterday her name is Mia. She is 7 weeks old. As a new owner I have many questions. First let me start off by apologizing for not doing a search and for my ignorance on this subject. Mia is 7 weeks old she has not received any shots, which shots do I need to give her first and by what age? Also how offten do I need to give her any shots and which ones? What dog food would you recommend? Can I please have a brand name. We are giving her milk from a bottle right now. IS this a bad idea? How many times should I feed her a day? We realy didnt have much for Mia, what are some items you would recommend for her? Such as toys, shampoo, brush, bed, etc,etc.... Can I please have brand names. What is good to help get rid of tick and fleas? We discovered some tick on Mia should I take her to get dipped or is there another way on getting rid of them? Is there any other web sites where I can read on how to take care and how yorkies act? Or any books you might recommend? I thank everyone in advance in helping me out. My wife and I love our new addition Mia and we want to give her a good and healthy life. If you have any other advice feel free to email me at chris.barron@us.yazaki.com Thanks Chris picture of Mia http://www.yorkietalk.com/gallery/da...0_1163-med.JPG Last edited by inzane001; 06-22-2005 at 09:32 AM. |

| Welcome Chris. I'm sure by now she should be on solid food. I feed my dog Iams smart puppy but I'm sure you will get a lot more suggestions. I would just take her to the vet and let the vet tell you which shots. I think she needs at least 4 sets of them and you probably should go to the vet asap to start the first set. I use gently shampoo buy 8 in 1. You need a brush to brush her daily. I would buy a crate for her to sleep in and so you can potty train her. Get some nylabones for her and some squeeky toys. I really think you should go to the vet to get suggestions about the tick stuff and definitely deworm her and start her on a heartworm medication.

| Chris, welcome to YT. You will find wonderful, supportive people here and the answers to all of your questions! Mia is beautiful. She is very young but should be eating puppy food. We have had great success with Royal Canin small breed baby. It's a dry food. You might even want to soak it in warm water to soften it for her for a couple of weeks. I have always just thrown a handful into Tucker's bowl 3 times a day. Sometimes he finishes it, sometimes he doesn't. But someone else may have better advice since Mia is so young. I know that Petco does vaccinations and they will not do them on a pup younger than 8 weeks. You should take her to a good vet and he/she will put you on a vaccination schedule. Usually every 2 or 3 weeks for several weeks is what is needed. IMO she's too young for a flea dip at this point. Are you sure it's a flea you found? Well, I'll let some of the other experts on here answer some of your other questions. Once again, welcome to YT!

| Chris, welcome to YT. Mia is still very young and you have a lot of work to do but you will find most answers you need on the forum. 1. First and foremost take her to the vet. She will need her series of shots that should be starting now I would also suggest having her wormed. Also, the tick needs to be removed. take a pair of tweezers and pull it out. Stab it or cut it i half and flush it down the toilet. The vet will put a frontline on her neck and that will get rid of any further ticks that you may not see and eggs. 2. I recommend Natural Balance from Petco because it has great ingredients but she might be too small for the kibble right now. My breeder had Chewy on a puppy cereal at this age because he was so small he was also on Royal Canin puppy food until he was old enough to switch to NB. I'm not sure about milk, but I wouldn't do it 3. Regarding the supplies, you need a small crate, a comb - she will need to be brushed daily and some toys that she can safely chew on. Don't worry about giving her a bath at this point, she is just too small and will get cold very easily. Also, the most important thing you can get is the Nutrical. These dogs get low blood sugar and you can give her 1/2 inch from the tube 2-3 times a day. I suggest the book Yorkshire terriers for Dummies but any book will probably give you sound info. get to the vet and they can help you as well, also your breeder should be able to answer health questions for you and give you the pups health records. Good Luck! |

| Hi Chris! Welcome to YT and congrats on Mia, its a great feeling when you first get them! Have you taken her to the vet yet? I suggest you take her to the vet right away for a health check up and they will be able to tell you what shots she will need. I think its parvo that you should try to get soon. But please take her to the vet asap. She's beautiful by the way, congrats!

| congrat on Mia Milk from a bottle was she not weaned yet from mommie, or totally weaned? please dont feed cows milk (they are lactose intolerant, you will get a runny stool)...if you want to supplement milk use esbilac or goats milk mixed into a quality dry food let it moisten the dry for a couple weeks then use only the dry... I would suggest using royal canin or bil-jac puppy food it can be found at petsmart. shots should be started right away, keep her out of any public place including the vets floor until you start the series...Never use "Lepto" in the shots a series of three 5/1 is what I use. 8 weeks,11 weeks, 14 weeks (no longer than 4 weeks apart) do rabies at 6 months or so. Bathing is fine as long as you blow her dry competely and dont forget to low dry the inside of her ears. I wish you the best and again congrats

| http://www.valleyhumanesociety.org/k...th/index05.cfm Chris: Here is a vaccine schedule. Take it into your vet and talk to them. Also, please be aware that these dogs must NOT get a LEPTO shot. |

| WELCOME! and congrats on your new baby Mia. What an adorable name! So I'm going to list all the things I've done for Coco through suggestions from here and her vet. So by no means is this professional advice: 1.) stainless steel bowls, plastic ones collect bacteria and cause allergies (learned the hard way) 2.) She can be on Advantage Flea Control at I believe 10 weeks 3.) DO NOT use baby shampoo, the PH levels are different for humans and animals 4.) Make sure to use good shampoo and conditioner for their coat (http://www.chrissystems.com/) good stuff 5.) Food should be healthy kibbles, with more healthy ingredients. Among the best according to magazines and vets are Innova, and nature's balance. 6.) If she's eating well, no need for milk supplements. Just mix hard kibble with soft canned food or drizzle water on the kibble to soften it up. 7.) Honey water is always recommended because yorkies are hypoglicemic, so their blood sugar can drop with excessive exercise. So for a couple of months provide her with honey water. Just mix a tablespoon with her water. 8.) No rawhide bones, Small chew toys plush or plastic. Also recommend some kind of dental chews like Nylabone. 9.) Start brushing teeth early. Yorkies are famous for bad teeth. Teeth cleanings can get expensive so take care of them now. 10.) You can get a brush, and brush her daily to avoid matting. You can get those little brushes with thin metally bristles. I got Coco the soft bristle kind, but they are really good as massage therapy and avoiding matting. 11.) If you like having your bed to yourself, keep her in her crate at night until she's a bit older so she can sleep in her own bed. She will whine and whimper for possible several weeks, but I just ignored Coco when she did that. I pet her and reassured her that I was there, but I didn't pick her up. Once they know they can have anything they want by whinning it doesn't stop. 12.) No jumping off high places (couches, beds, chairs, stairs, ect.) She can break her bones. 13.) Be consistent with potty training. She's too young to go outside so train her on puppy pads inside the house. Don't place them near her food or bed. Every 30 minutes take her to them and tell her "Go potty" or something similar. Reward her when she goes on them, go crazy happy. She will eventually get it. 14.) Can't be with other animals, on grass or outside on lease at least till 16 weeks, till she gets all her shots. 15.) Start heartworm medicine at 8weeks (ask vet). Musquitos can kill your pup. If Mia gets bitten, she can have heartworm, which for a pup that small can be fatal. Now that summer is coming musquitos are swarming. 16.) Learn from groomers how to pluck her ear hairs, to avoid infections. Also learn to trim her hair around her pads on her feet. 17.) If you want to discourage chewing or biting, purchase Bitter Apple spray. It's a very bitter tasting thing that they don't like. It's helped me stop coco from biting, chewing, ect. 18.) If you will be gone during the day, DO NOT give her run of the house or even a room. it's still too much for her. She can get scared or worse, hurt herself. So just keep her in her crate or a small 2-3foot area (gated off). I crate trained Coco , and now at 4 months she's 95% potty trained. It's not mean, they actually love it in there and they nap. That is what puppies do and they need it, so don't interrupt her napping time. 19.) Always keep an eye on her, not only for potty purpose (if you see her sniffing a lot or circling, take her to the pads) but to make sure she's not eating anything she's not supposed to. 20.) putting music on for her at night might help her stay calm, or a ticking clock (sounds of mom's beating heart) wrapped with a blanket. 21.)food and water need to be left for her 24 hours a day. But she needs to be fed her big meals, 2-3 times a day. I feed Coco, once before I leave for work in the morning and once when I get back, but she always has a little bit of hard kibbles to munch on and fresh honey water to drink. I recently stopped the honey water because she's gained some weight (2lbs at 16 weeks) and is stronger. 22.) Do lots of playing, so she can get used to you and make sure she's on a feeding and potty schedule if you can. It makes everything easier. 23.) get her used to riding in a car early. Some dogs freak out. Mine loves it because she knows she is not left out of anything. 24.) These yorkies don't have fur, they have hair, so they can't stay warm like other hairy dogs. If your place is cold, provide blanket for her, or buy her little Pj's. 25.) If she shakes/shivers don't worry it's normal. They do that when they are scared, nervous, excited, ect. 26.) Go to the vet to start on her set of shots. They will at that time deworm her (mothers milk has some stuff in it that could cause them to get sick if not dewormed..it's just medicine given to them orally), and give her the parvo/distemper shot. There will be other shots provided if you want them but Coco's vet has only been giving her one treatment at a time because they are so tiny. I think thats it for now...haha...let me know if you have questions.
