| Buying a Pup! Hello, any advice on how soon is too soon for a puppy to come home? I've found a breeder with a pup that will only grow to be 3-lbs, and the breeder will let me take the puppy home at 8 weeks. I know puppies are usually good to go at 10-12 weeks, and I've heard that when the puppy is especially small, breeders should keep the puppy for longer. The breeder assures me that although the puppy will be little, it does not have fragile bones like a teacup, and it is in fine health. All of three puppies in the litter will only grow to be 3-pounds, so this one does not seem to be the runt of the litter. Any thoughts on whether or not this sounds unsafe for the puppy appreciated! Thanks. |

| my first thought is, be vary careful! Any breeder that is promising you the weight of the dog is something to be warry of. Most reputable breeders will tell you that they cannont guarantee but can only give an educated guess as to what the adult weight of the pup will be... I would keep looking... |

| Welcome to YT! I'm no expert by any means, but I think that is too early. Plus, there is no way the breeder can guarantee that the puppies will not grow to over 3 pounds. I'm curious how much the puppy weighs now?

| I hope I am wrong; but a couple of things jump out at me. A good breeder would never let a yorkie go to its new home at 8 weeks; and there is no way to GUARANTEE a 3 pound pup. Even very small sires and dams can have a larger puppy. For the breeder to tell you that it would be okay because the puppy isn't fragile is silly. Puppies learn so much socialization from their mothers and littermates during those first few months, that that is the best reason to leave with mother longer. I hope all goes well for you; but a little caution in the beginning can save you a lot of cost, and heartache in the future.

| Hi and Welcome to YT. Yes, I do feel it is very important for puppies to stay with their mothers till they are at least 12 weeks old, especially, when they are this small. I'm sorry, but I have to question this breeder about her comments...She might be perfectly fine, but I think I would continue my search. One other thing, at this age, I really don't think it's possible to guarantee what the weight of the puppies will be when grown. Again, welcome. You have come to the right place for all your questions to be answered. Good luck to you on getting a health, happy puppy!

| Welcome to YorkieTalk!! I personally feel that 8 weeks is too young to let a puppy go...Most reputable breeders will keep them until 12 weeks. They learn so much from their mom and littermates during this time. There's no way that the breeder can guarantee weight. According to the breeder, (who later I found out was actually a broker for puppymills ) my yorkie was supposed to be 4-5 lbs...He's 11 lbs Honestly, I would keep looking...If you want a small one, I would find a very reputable breeder who happens to have a small one, not a breeder who purposely breeds 3 lb females to get smaller ones... Try www.ytca.org

| some breeders like to keep them until they are 12 weeks. I got Teddi at 9 weeks and made sure I could come home during the day and take care of her...you need to make sure they eat more often when they are really small. But she turned out just perfect and will be 1 year old this month and is not yet 3 lbs. Good luck! |

| Hi and Welcome to YorkieTalk! I agree with all the ladies who suggested that you wait until a puppy is 12 wks old. I have 2 Yorkies and got them both at different ages. I can't begin to tell you the difference in the two. Every pup has it's own personality but that's exactly why the puppies should be with their Mom and littermates. They learn and develope so much during that period. Sure, some may be just fine leaving early but they could have been "better" with that extra time in the litter. To me it's kind of like when you have a child that "could" go to school the next year but really isn't ready and "should" wait until the following year but the parents decide it's cheaper so send them to school now instead of paying for daycare one more year.

| Thanks for all of the feedback! The breeder did not guarantee 3lbs, she said that was her best guess. I'm looking more for a pup around 5lbs, but I think I will go and visit her pups. Thanks for the advice on the 12-weeks. If I feel good about the breeder and pups, I will see if the puppy can stay with its mom for another month. |

| Welcome to YT. If you really want the puppy I'd tell her you'd prefer to leave the pup there until it's 12 weeks. If she says no I'd go look somewhere else, and like everyone has said a breeder can't guarantee a weight.

| I personally would keep looking. Trust your gut...this puppy IS way too young and small to be placed. Pups are kept with the litter for reasons other than just health. Also, if she is purposely breeding to get really small pups, that is not a good sign either. |

| i didnt see where the op states that the breeder guaranteed 3lbs just that it shouldnt be more than 3lbs which a breeder can give an educated guess and that doenst make them bad breeders also i think its preference when it comes to getting a puppy t 8 vs 12 weeks. i havent had a problem with getting puppies at 6, 7, or 8 weeks i have never gotten a yorkie older than 9 weeks old i dont think it makes them bad breeders because they let them go earlier than other breeders. |
