| Sleeping through the night? Hi everyone! We got our little girl last week, she is 8 weeks now and seems to have adapted really well to us! I've never had a dog before, so am trying to figure this all out before our classes start soon. I've been doing a lot of reading as well, but have not found the answer to the sleeping though the nights......The question I have, how long is it going to be before I won't have to feed her in the middle of the night? She goes to bed at 11 now (in her crate) and is up around 2p for some food and drink and is up for the day at around 6.30 am. She is still very small (1.5 lbs) that is why I though she is still needing to be feed at night, she wakes up to eat and pees and goes right back to sleep, so that is great, but was wondering how long before I can let her go longer than 4 hours? Any suggestions and advice will be appreciated!! Thank you, guys are such a great group here! |

| Hi, I got my little girl around the same age as yours. For the first few weeks, I was feeding her 4x a day: 7am, 11am, 4pm, 7pm. I did this until she was 12 weeks so at night, she slept right through and wasnt hungry. I also crate trained her. She would go in for bed around 11:30 and be up with me at 7. She is 6months now and is completely trained, since crate training helps them with the potty training. Hope this helps a little and goodluck!

| I never had an issue with Gracie needing to eat during the night. I had her on a 3-4x/day feeding when I got her at 8 weeks, with the last feeding at 7 pm. She always needed to go potty around 2 am or so. Eventually, she got to where she could hold it all night. A good rule of thumb is they can control their bladder in hours for the number of months that they are old, until 6 months or so. By about 5-6 months, Gracie had mastered the doggy steps so she could take herself potty during the night. (She uses pads indoors).

| So I don't really need to feed her at nigh? I do feed her 4 time a day, but when she wakes up at 2 am to pee I do feed her as well because she would cry right after I put her in the crate and I thought she was hungry. She would eat a bit, but last night she didn't eat at all, just drank water. He cried a lot on every hour however. She sleeps in our bedroom and I talk to her and that quites her down, for a few minutes. I guess that is part of her getting used to the create and not because she is hungry. Should I leave water in her crate or would that create more issues? Thanks! Last edited by Laila34; 09-08-2007 at 07:14 AM. Reason: spelling |

| I am in the same boat. We brought our new puppy home a little over a week ago, he is 10 weeks old. I have been sleeping on the sofa in the family room where his crate is. I can't wait to get back to my own bed! The first few days he would waking up about every hour and call out. I finally figured out, that if I left the radio on he slept better. Now, he has been going to bed at 9 or 10 and get up at 3. Sometime he goes potty. Then he will go back to sleep until 5 or 6, at this time he is ready to start his day. Luckly, at 6 my daughter(13) will take over for a while. So, I can get a few more minutes of sleep. |

YT 500 Club Member | We have had that on occasion. She did not sleep through the night for some time after we got her at 10 weeks, more due to wanting to potty. Then, somewhere around three or four years, she did it again. We go through that now and then. She is six now. I just remember not too long ago going to work saying that I felt that I had a newborn baby, and here it was a dog well over puppy stage.

I am fairly new here as well, I've only had my girl now for a month. She is almost four months old and is small too (2lbs as of last week). He might be crying because he doesn't want to be in his crate. My Aira did this a lot in her first two weeks. I am not sure that it is necessary to feed him at night because their metabolisms slow down at night while they are sleeping. This is why they can hold it longer at night. For night time I have Aira in an ex-pen with her bed and pee pads, which saves me from having to get up She still pees about once or twice a night. She's usually in there from 12AM-7AM. She now goes to the pads on her own so if I want to sleep in I let her out at 7AM, feed her and and she'll lie beside my bed and sleep and go to the pads if required. In fact today she slept beside the bed from 7AM-11AM. We were VERY lazy today | |
