My femaloe yorkie is mothering kittens... Hi everyone! A while back I posted about my yorkie thinking that she was pregnant. Anyway, my hunch was right and she had a false pregnancy, which is good...she's young. Well, a few days ago we found five kittens in a field near our house. We watched them and my boys played with them, etc. Everytime we went to see them they always seemed hungry and I finally started really paying attention and I haven't seen a mom around in days so we brought them in and gave them some milk...they were starved. Well, my female yorkie who produced milk from her false pregnancy is this very moment nursing the kittens. Is that ok? Since she first saw the kittens she has been extremely antsy and keeping a close eye on them, etc and all of a sudden she just snuggled up to them, cleaned their bums and completely calmed them down and, like I said, is now nursing them. I'm not sure if I should be allowing her to do so or not? I am anxiously waiting to hear anyone's responses to this! TIA Coral

Wow, that's wierd! But as far as I can think, I don't think there's any danger in her doing so... Maybe someone else has some advice? You really have to take a picture of this for us!

Are the kittens old enough to eat and drink on their own? If so I'd take them off of her. Bless her little heart. She wants her own baby so bad.

| There shouldn't be a problem, having had kittens here, one started to nurse from my lab who had puppies, and Cody has nursed from my cat after her kittens, the vet said it was fine. If they are very small then go ahead, if they are about 3-4 weeks give them some goats milk and dry food, human milk isn't very good for them, it can tear their bellies up. Yogurt would be good too. Also you will need to worm them and worm your little girl if she is licking them. Like pups, kittens usually have worms too. anything you need for the kittens just ask

Thanks everyone for your quick responses! She is licking their bottoms...that is the main thing I am concerned about but I will be sure to get her dewormed ASAP! I really have no idea how old the kittens are but when I fend them soft food and milk they gobbled both down. They were so hungry! I never knew about cow's milk, though, so I'll be sure to pick up some goat's milk for the poor things. She has turned instantly into Mom! My husband's dog (a male) is not aloud anywhere near the kittens...she fights him off like nothing! I see a side of her I've never seen before...never heard her growl or be aggresive before...or motherly for that matter. I tell ya, this is one thing I've never seen before! lol

I've heard of this before but with a much larger dog. ETA: The kittens look like they are old enough to start eating/drinking from a dish. I think I would start letting them do that, although that sure is a sweet picture!
