| Butt Absess?? Has anyone elses baby had this before? I noticed the other day Coco was scooting on her rear. I didn't think much of it cause she'll do that once in a while then doesn't do it for months. Well when I went to wash her butt, I felt something raw back there. I looked and it looks like a blister of some sort had popped right below her butt hole (sorry to be graphic). It didn't seem to bother her much when I touched it. So I cleaned it up and put some neosporin on it. I called the vet and they said they may have to put her under to drain it then put her under antibiotics. Seems a little excessive to me. Anyone had any experience with this?

| Wow, sounds like her anal glands need to be expressed... and I know it can be painful for her, but I will let the experts give closer advice...

| She's never needed her glands expressed before. She always does it herself. If I had seen her scooting a lot I would have taken her to get them expressed. But I'd only seen her scoot one time this past weekend. I've just been keeping the absess clean and putting antibiotic ointment on it to help it heal.

| I would be very, very careful about that, and if it were me, I would definitely take my baby to the vet. Abscesses are very dangerous things because they involve infection and if that gets in the bloodstream, I believe it can be deadly. (I'm not a vet, nor am I trying to scare you, but I BELIEVE this is true...???) Maybe you should call your vet and ask them if this is very dangerous for the baby or if they think it will heal okay. My friend had a miniature poodle that had an anal gland abscess, and they had a really tough time with it, so I guess I would just tell you to please be careful!

Our Vet showed us pictures of how the anal glands look and there is a small canal that sometimes is just plain not big enough, or it can get blocked and infected. It they burst too many times, it is recommended to have them removed and must be done by a specialist.

| OUCH! I think with it being so close to the source of fecal matter that I would be worried about infection too. Poor baby...I would tell you to kiss the boo boo for me but.... Just kidding. Hope your baby feels better soon.

| Oh, poor Coco. This same thing just happened to my daughter's dog, Kirby, who is also Maddie's brother. He got so sick along with that and kept throwing up, and the vet figured he was throwing up from the pain. He said it's a very painful condition, so I'm sure little Coco is feeling it too. The vet drained Kirby's and cleaned it up good and sent him home with pain killers and antibiotics. She also put neosporin on it. His little butt is looking much better now, though it took a while. My daughter was told that since this happened, he should have his anal glands drained, or whatever it's called, once a month for the next year.

| My mom's dog got a bump on her butt and the vet said that it was a blocked anal gland. So he had us put warm compresses on it to help it pop and drain. She was put on antibiotics. She again had another problem recently. It looks like we'll have to make sure she gets her anal glands expressed, the vet said some dogs are not able to do it themselves. |

| My poor little Coco-mo. Maybe it's her anal glands? Call me after you take her to the vet. Poor baby.

| those darn anal glands! Good thing you saw her scooting! Bubba didn't scoot, all the sudden one day he was major lethargic & then I smelled it! He had burst his anal gland early this spring. The vet cleaned him up and gave me this ointment in a long nosed tube to use inside the sore until it healed over. Not fun to administer to my little guy - even though the said it shouldn't hurt. The worst part is they say they can be more susceptible to this happening again, so i was paranoid about it and a couple weeks later took him back to have the glands expressed again and try to get a lesson to do it myself - because it was a costly procedure. I've only done it once - gloves & lubricant - a must! Thank goodness he has been good to go since then! I think there is a lot to be said for a warm bath. I always place the dogs' behinds under a warm stream of water when bathing
