| New to all of this.. Hello everyone! I've seen some pretty adorable Yorkies around here! I'm hoping that our little girl will be just as adorable. I'm new to all of this. I'm going from having had Chocolate Labs for 13yrs to getting a Yorkie. My fiance has grown up with his Godmothers Yorkie, Goober, who turned 18 this year! YES, 18!!! He is now blind and deaf, but still gets around. We went to look at 2 litters of Yorkies last week and have placed a deposit on a puppy. We can bring her home on September 22nd. I've got mixed emotions about it. I'm scared and nervous, but very excited at the same time. We went out and purchased a "Yorkshire Terrier" magazine. I've been reading through it, and trying to get "up to speed" on everything. She will most likely go to work with my fiance daily - on days that she can't go with him (when the weather is bad) she would stay home, but he'd come home at lunch to play with her.. he works 10 minutes from home. I am trying to find out what food to feed her. I can't seem to find anything that I'm "happy" about wanting to feed her. I don't know what she is being fed at the breeders house, I forgot to ask. What do I want to look for in a food? My Labradors were always on Inova, I've seen a few people suggest that. I've also seen that Royal Cainn (not sure on the spelling) offers a food made "just for" Yorkshire's - but that it's for 10mos and older. Also, what are peoples thoughts on litterbox training/paper training? We live in Vermont.. I'm afraid she won't want to go outside in the Winter, and if it's really cold - I don't want to force a 5lbs dog to go outside! She'll freeze to death! She'll also be a "boat dog" during the summers.. and having her paper trained would make boating much easier on all of us. Thoughts and opinions on Yorkies as Thearphy Dogs & Agility Dogs would be awsome also. Again, my Labradors were both. Oddly enough there were articles on BOTH in the Yorkshire magazine I picked up. With the work I do, I'd love for her to be a Theraphy Dog - it would allow for me to bring her to work with me. And my last question.. BARKING. How can we work with her to make sure she's not a CONSTANT barker. That's my only "fear" of getting a Yorkie. I'm not a fan of "Yippers". My fiances mother has a s**tzu and she doesn't bark unless you ask it of her.. and I'm hoping Bella is the same way.. Thank you for reading my babble! I'll leave you with a picture of our little one.. http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/b...Yorkies005.jpg |

| Glad you found YT! Congrats on the pup that will soon be moving in! What a cutie. How old will she be when you bring her home? I live in Iowa where we also have frigid winters, my yorkies do just fine going outside. Matter of fact my 3 1/2 Roxie is sometimes hard to get to come in even in the snow & cold if she thinks there is a squirrel to chase! I do put a pad down when I'm at work in case of any accidents, but my dogs love to be outside. Mine do not bark unless someone is at the door or they want the squirrels to come down out of the trees- lol You will find lots of helpful people & info here on YT

| It gets really cold here in Chicago in the winter, I put a coat on mines and they hope thru the snow and love it. After they use it, I bring them inside. If they hear noises they bark, they are very protective and I hate they have been labeled by others as yappers. Kodak is my barker but only when startled or fearing someone is approaching unexpectedly. It's mostly because of their size. I use a flyswatter to hit the floor or wall if he start barking at shadows of birds or cats that walk outside when he sits in the patio window. Just to let him know you don't have to bark at everything. A lot of breeders recommend solid gold and some use the Eukanuba yorkie brand food. I've tried everything. Good luck with your new puppy!

| I also feed Canidae all Life Stages. Scooter is 5 months old now and seems to like it...I give him Spot's Stew also, especially right now. He lost all of his lower baby teeth last weekend and is having trouble chewing hard foods. Your new baby is so cute...you're going to fall in love! |

| Hi and welcome to YT. You will find Yorkies to be very different from any other dog - in a really good way!!! Mine can be "Yappy" as they bark when they hear someone come to the door, see someone outside and definitely at squirrels. Because you are going to have a boater dog whom you will want to go on pads, start with pad training. Your baby will be okay doing outside during the winter to potty, but if any longer than that, you will want to make sure you have a warm coat and/or sweater as they get really cold easily (and they also get hot easily). Pups can be trained to use pads and go outside. You will find tons of information here - it is a really great place to be!!

| Welcome to YT. You'll want to socialize your yorkie from the time you bring it home. Socialization should be done before they are 16 weeks old. Some say it is too late after that. That includes car rides, allowing them to go and see many places and into different types of buildings (where you can take little dogs), allowing them to meet other dogs that belong to friends and you know have been vaccinated. I suggest a complete horizon of experiences (including your boat (and don't forget the life jacket) before they are sixteen weeks of age and you should have a well-rounded, sociable yorkie that doesn't yap. This should help you with the food. I feed Natural Balance Ultra-Premium, but there are lots of great foods and you can decide for yourself: whole dog journal's top food list 2007 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Whole Dog Journal's Top Foods List for 2007: Addiction Foods - www.addictionfoods.com Artemis - www.artemiscompany.com Azmira - www.azmira.com Back to Basics - www.beowulfs.com Bench & Field Holistic Natural Canine - www.benchandfield.com Blue Buffalo - www.bluebuff.com Burns - www.bpn4u.com by Nature BrightLife - www.bynaturepetfoods.com by Nature Organics - www.bynaturepetfoods.com California Natural - www.naturapet.com Canidae - www.canidae.com Canine Caviar - www.caninecaviar.com Chicken Soup for the Pet Lovers Soul - www.chickensoupforthepetloverssoul.com Cloud Star Kibble - www.cloudstar.com Drs. I could have just trained her to use pads in the house, but this is the way I trained my other one and it worked great then, so I continued with Kacee. They can sometimes be very difficult to housetrain if you work. So, if you do work, be prepared for a longer process and more mistakes. Good luck!

| Hi and welcome. Also congratulation on your new little fur-girl! She looks very, very young in that picture. How old will she be when you bring her home on the 22nd? As for food, there is nothing better than home cooked. You can make it up and freeze in advance. Also the wee-wee pads are a must when leaving a puppy at home, but not to crate them. Use an expen attached to the front of the wire crate. Tie the crate door open. Put a blanket over the crate to create a den-like area. Put the pad at the opposite end, attach the water to the side of the pen and leave a nylabone chew and a little puppy kong. I'll attach a picture of how the expen and crate look. I took this just for posting since mine are older and don't need the expen for containment now. http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...n8-6-07009.jpg |

| Welcome to YT. I feed Nutro Natural Choice, and they seem to really like it. Sometimes I put table scraps into too. They love vegtables, rice, meat and gravy. Penny is a yapper. She yaps at every noise she hears, but I think she gets scared. Piper is very quiet. He'll only bark if my other two bark I don't think he even knows what he's barking at.
