| New Yorkie owner Hello all, I'm so glad I found this site. We are new owners of a 9 week old male yorkie. His name is Spike (my girls wanted him to have a "tough" name). I have to admit I know very little about training. Our last puppy was over 10 years ago. She seemed to pick up on training quickly. I'm confused about outside training vs. paper training, when should his ears come up? When should he be neutered? He already responds to his name, and comes when called (most times). He is too young for local "formal" classes, but that is my next step in behavior training. Will we confuse him by training for outside and in? He gave me a que this morning that he wanted to go out by whimpering, but I missed it and he pooped on the floor. What about when we are out? My last issue with him, he whines and screams at night. I know he is lonely, but we have to sleep too. I put my husbands old tee shirt in his crate, which is in a pen in my kitchen, just outside my bedroom door. Last night he didn't cry unit 7am (I can deal with that). I want to do the right thing in training and caring for him. Any suggestions? Thanks! |

| Welcome! I nine week old pup is like having a new born baby in the house. They usually cannot go all night without having to go. some people do both paper and outside. We just are outside, but we live in the country. When my 6 mth old was smaller I spent many nights sleeping on the couch, so everyone else in the house could sleep. Keep the ends of his ears shaved and most times the ears will go up. Some people tape them, but I have not found it necessary. Babies need to go out very often. |

| Welcome and congratulations!!!! I am new here too... my girl Mindy is 5 months old. I'm still in the potty training mode. Mindy is excellent when it comes to peeing on the pee pad but she is off and on with her poop. She seems to prefer my shag area rug in our dining room. We don't use that room much so I think she thinks it's okay. I always pick it up in her presence and put it on her pad so she gets the hint. We also take her outside but I have to admit it is so much easier with her going on the pads. Doesn't bother me any but I'm not sure about my hubby? I'd prefer her being able to go in and out, especially in the winter months. It gets pretty cold here and I don't want to have to take her out if I don't have too. As for sleeping, we crate Mindy just at the bottom of the steps to our bedroom. She sleeps through the night but I do put a pee pad at the front of her kennel, just in case she has to go. So far she seems to use it most nights. Not sure if this is good or bad to do? You sound like you are doing a great job. Don't worry too much it will all come in good time. I would love to see a picture of your baby. Enjoy Mary |

| Welcome to YT! Crate training can be wonderful, but you must be consistent. I'm sure there is a link around here with a real how-to. You might want to use the search button. Part of crate training is training the pet owner - lol

| First welcome to YT. He has to be atleast 6 months old to be neutered. If you can train him inside and out that's great, but their kind of stubborn when it comes to housebreaking. Classes will really help you, and him out. If you can teach him crate training, and he's good till 7 am your lucky, and I'd keep it up, or he'll be keeping you up. I hope this helped. Best wishes with your new little love. Please post some pictures when you can.

| Welcome to YT. I'm sure you'll get plenty of advice. Just keep asking questions. Yorkies tend to be difficult to train, so don't get discouraged. You'll have greater success if you keep him confined to a small area and not allow him to have the run of the house. |
