| Did he really housebreak himself? We just moved from an apartment to a house at the end of June, since then we were able to take Vinnie out more. I live in a college town, although I'm not far removed from college myself, i'm married and work in a District Attorney's Office, knowing the crime volume in the complex we simply didn't take him out. He recently stopped using the pads and just begs to go out, where he does his business. We just were trying to get him used to going outside and the word outside, the whole potty training thing he did himself, although anytime he would go outside we praised the heck out of him. Did anyone else's dog housebreak themselves?

No Longer a Member | I wouldn't say that Chloe housebroke herself, but I had her housebroken at 5 months, and it went very well. We do the outside thing too. We also use the word "outside." I don't want to use "pee pee" or poop in the house, so we say outside, then out there, I say pee pee and poop. |

| We weren't training him to do it yet, we were just so concerned with his continual use of the pee pad since we had moved! He's too smart for MY own good, haha

| I'm glad he trained himself, but I had to train mine.

| Sometimes I think Winston came trained...but I know better, as the breeder had told me he had never gone potty outside. But to my amazement he was trained the very first day to potty outside only...he has never had a single accident in the house, I really think he would explode before he would potty inside. My secret is...DO NOT TAKE YOUR NEW PUPPY IN THE HOUSE UNTIL AFTER YOU TAKE THE PUPPY OUTSIDE AND GOES POTTY THERE...IT MAY TAKE AWHILE BUT EVENTUALLY THE PUPPY WILL GO POTTY OUTSIDE...MAKE IT A BIG DEAL WITH PLENTY OF PRAISE AND TREATS...ONLY THEN DO YOU TAKE THE PUPPY INTO YOUR HOME. This little tidbit of advise was given to me by a dog trainer, before I got Winston...I was so worried about training him as his brother was very difficult to train and had many accidents in the house, it was terrible!!! She told me to do this the moment we brought him home, they are eager to please...and once they know where to go they will always go there to make you happy. It worked for me...I hope others use this advise...I know I will with any future puppies, as Winston was a dream to train.

| That is excellent advice that I could have used months ago, haha! But seriously, it does make sense, I will remember that for the future, thank you! That is why we weren't training him to go outside, we had just moved and he was just getting to 100% with the pads when we did.

| I wish... Meka thinks "outside" is play time... I try to take her out daily and she has yet to go out there. She just loves to play in the grass !?!

| This may sound crazy...but since the first night we had Lola in our home, she was house-broken. I have never crated my babies and both Tino and Lola have slept with us since day one...we have doggie steps on out bed. The first night in our home Lola was laying in bed, jumped down the doggies stairs, used the pee-pee pad and came back to bed. It was a miracle! Valentino on the other hand...well he still has his days! I wounder if it is easier for girls than boys, or because Lola watched Tino her older brother and just followed his lead???

| I had a Yorkie, Toby, that was litter box train for 8 years. He would go outside when I took him out, but most of the time he used the box. At the time I lived in an old farmhouse converted into apartments. When I moved to the upstairs apartment he refused to use the litter box. For the 2 years I lived there I had to walk up and down 3 flights of steps. When I bought a house he continued to go outside until the last year of his life.
