| The (Premade) Raw Diet? I am interested in finding out more about the raw diet. How many of you YT people use it and how do your dogs like it. What do you feed, if anything, in addition to raw. How does it affect the dog's stools. Is it chunky or the consistency of most canned food? Is it frozen in individual portions? And the big question, how expensive is it? How much do you spend on average per month and what brand do you use? If you have never tried it-what good/bad things have you heard about it. Any information would be helpful, Thanks! | I feed the raw diet, my dogs are thriving on it. However I don't feed a pre-made, I work out all the ratios myself as I prefer to know exactly what they are eating and it means I can control things such as how much veg or bone one of my dog gets compared to another. www.rawdogranch.com http://www.njboxers.com/faqs.htm |

| We use The Honest Kitchen, which is freeze-dried raw that you rehydrate to use. It smells kind-of like chicken soup and if you let it sit per the directions after mixing, has a fairly firm consistency. We use both the Force and Embark. The girls get about 1/4 cup for dinner and I usually hydrate about 2 cups at a time. I just use a container and refrigerate. This makes the consistency a little firmer and doesn't hurt the quality of the food. This is what my girls get for dinner. For breakfast, they get yogurt with Missing Link added and fruit throughout the day. Sometimes they will munch on a little kibble. Stools have a slightly green color (similar to the food when mixed), dry up really fast and eventually just kind of blow away. The first time I ordered, I went with 2 - 4 lb bags ordered direct from the company. This lasted me a little over two months and was $80 with shipping. When I re-ordered, I got a 10 lb bag from a pet store selling through Amazon.com that was only $60. I expect this will last me about 3 months. P.S. Where in Michigan are you??????

| I use Nature's Variety Frozen Raw. The dogs don't get it every day - probably 4-5 times a week. They LOVE it. They snarf it down like crazy. It has great stuff in it and if you want convenience... it's great. It comes in two sizes - the small individual medallions and a bigger size patty. The rest of the time they eat a kibble diet - with "good" extras every now and then. |

| Lacy has been on a raw diet for over a year now and has done great on it. I feed her Nature's Variety raw medallions, and I alternate rabbit and venison everyday. She is 7.5lbs and she eats 4oz (4 medallions) per day -two in the morning and two in the evening. I also give her a glucosamine/chondroiton supplement for her luxating patellas in the morning and 1/4tsp of Juice Plus Enzyme supplement in the evening. Being on a raw diet, she really doesn't need the enzyme supplement but I figured it couldn't hurt. She usually get a few grain-free treats sometimes too. I will also occasionally (like a couple times a week) give her a tablespoon of Green Tripe made by Solid Gold (in a can), and I have given her raw chicken necks before. You can go to www.naturesvariety.com to find out more info about their products, and there is a feeding chart as well. I buy the 3lb bag of medallions (48 medallions). The rabbit is the most expensive of their foods and is close to $15 a bag. The venison is $12-something as is the lamb I think. The chicken/turkey is the cheapest at $10-something. There is also Organic chicken and beef but I can't remember how much those are.

I always heard it was so stinky, but when I opened the can I didn't think it really smelled at all. It just has a slight stinky smell. Maybe it's stinkier to other people??

| Kalina eats the frozen raw diet - either Primal or Natures Variety. I give her the 1 oz nuggets the same as Lacy gets, except she only gets 1 1/2 1 oz. nuggets in the AM and the same in the PM. She weighs 4 lbs. I let her free feed on the Natures Variety kibble and, for variety, I sometimes give her the NV freeze dried, which costs $25/bag!! The freeze dried is meant as a supplemental meal, a training aid, or for feeding when traveling, etc. Kalina goes crazy over this food. She eats it - well today my daughter and I counted and it took her 18 seconds to eat her meal. It really does NOT look like a lot of food, but there are no grains in either product!! It is very close to what they would eat in a natural environment. You asked about the smell. Not stinky at all!! It has an unusual smell (the freeze dried) but it's not a bad smell and it's not a potent smell...just different. She likes this food WAY WAY better than the homecooked diet I had her on and it's very convenient and easy - thaw and eat!! So far I've given her the lamb, but will try other stuff later - like the rabbit or venison.
