| Need advise...yorkie vs grandson Grandson Jacob, 5 yrs, comes to visit about once a week. He and JPop have a good time, playing with toys, chase, etc. But JPop is very jealous. Last night Jacob was sitting with me when JPop jumped up to join us. Jacob reached over to pet him and JPop snarled, growled and would have nipped at him if I hadn't pulled him away. It was about 7:30 and he (JPop) was getting a little tired too. I'm really concerned about this, I don't want him to be a little brat (hes 1 1/2 yrs). Also, I'll be picking up the new puppy in two weeks, and starting to stress over that. I'm going to call and ask to breeder to have a shirt or something with the new baby's scent on it and pick it up next weekend so JPop can get used to his scent. Please, any advise on this would be nice. I don't want my grandson to be scared to visit. |

| I think the best thing would be to put Jpop up while your grandson is small. Some Yorkies are just afraid of children and will snap at them. After Jpop knows that Jacob is there for a while, try giving him some individual attention and reintroducing them slowly. Hope this helps!

| Jpop True..better safe then sorry, when it comes to a child getting bit, especially in the face or eye..dogs are not always predictable. Take Jpop to visit the pup if possible..he will not like it, but take him to pick it up also..and the shirt is a good idea. |

| Thanks for the advise. I was a little upset at JPop, but hey, he's only doing what doggies instints are, right? but I will put him in another room when Jacob visits. |

| When I was a young child, I had grandparents with 2 poms. They were quite cute dogs but I was terrified of them. When we had to visit, I would walk in the house, sit on the couch and never move until it was time to leave. They never bit me, but would bark at my ankles and scare me to death. My grandparents would call me a baby, which certainly didn't help the situation. I had always wished they would have put them in the bedroom while I was there, it would have been more enjoyable to me. All those years and I never saw more than one room in that house because I was afraid to move. If they could only see me now, the one expected to never have any dogs.... I now live with 6 yorkies, one golden retriever and expecting two Biewers soon. When I look back, I do see how silly I was, but I never had any relationship with them and it could have been so easily avoided. I always put my yorkies a safe distance when my granddaughter visits, although, she loves them. They are the first things she goes to find when she comes in the house. She giggles when they bark, of course she's only 18 months old. Therefore, my suggestion, it won't hurt to put JPop up during the visit. Actually Jpop might enjoy the peace during that time as well.

| In addition, I think he needs to be firmly reprimanded when he behaves as he did toward your grandson last night. Dog instinct or not, you are the alpha and what you say goes. What you like is allowed and is not growled or barked at or snapped at under any circumstances. I know dogs can get jealous but it is up to us to train them to behave properly even if they do get jealous. If he knows he will hwve to be put up whenever the child comes if he cannot behave properly, then this may be enough to teach him not to do it. |

| I disagree with the "firm reprimand" or "crating" when your grandson comes to visit.. I would suggest everytime the little one comes over please sit on the floor with the child and the yorkie get down on his level with both by your side. He is scared, intimidated and unfamiliar with your little grandson. If your consistant each time your grandson arrives your yorkie baby and adult yorkie will become accustom to your grandsons movements and smells.... Small children move fast and haphazardly which will scare a little yorkie, make him defensive and or nervous. A word command like "be nice" in a firm tone works as well, I have 7 yorkies and when any hear that phrase they stop in their tracks and pay attention.

| Rochester used to snap at my neice all the time, but he's toothless so it doesn't matter. He kinda grew used to her after couple of months and learned to accept her. Last edited by Junebug; 06-19-2005 at 03:57 PM. |
