| Has anyone had a tracheal wash done on their little puppy? Iam trying to do research on this and trying to see what other peoples insight is on this. My puppy died this morning and we feel it was due to the tracheal wash that they performed on him earlier this week. does anyone have any info on this procedure and if it should be done on a small puppy? |

| I read every post about your sick puppy. It was so sad. I don't know about tracheal wash in puppies, but I'm a nurse and when I read the original post about the baby being fine except for the cough, then they did the procedure and the baby became critical, i thought, "OMG, the puppy aspirated-it's aspiration pneumonia!" I also thought it was strange that they would do this procedure if he really didn't have any other symptoms of illness. Pippa had kennel cough when we got her, my vet said we would try amoxicillin, but it may not work because many times it is a viral illness that has to run it's course. I'm sure you wish you could turn back time! I hope you find some answers, I certainly think it was the vet's intervention that led to your puppy's death.

| I am so sorry to hear about your baby. I don't know anything about the wash, but Bella did have the kennel cough pretty bad and never once did the vet ever even talk about a trachea wash.

| Lost a puppy I too lost a puppy from pnuemonia and a cough, I had my pup to three different vets and never did one mention a tracheal wash. Did you do an internet search on this subject? I would try that, talk to a couple of vets, maybe call a local school of veternary medicine. I hope you find some answers, it sounds to me like the pup ingested the fluid in his lungs and that made the pup even sicker and caused the pnuemonia. JMHO |

| I am a nurse also....and I had the EXACT SAME first thought "aspiration pneumonia"... Did they do the 'wash' to diagnose the illness???? (like trying to bring up some secretions to culture) Or did they do the wash to try to treat the illness??? (like to try to apply some kind of medication / treatment) I feel so badly for you all.....I would want some answers...at least! |

| they were trying to diagnose the cough. In talking to the emergency care vet she said that he had definately died from kennelcough (bordetella sp?) pnuemonia and my understanding is that comes from the bacteria that causes kennelcough traveling to the lungs. It seems logical to me that if a puppy had the bacteria for kennelcough living in his throat shoving a tube through his throat and therefore the bacteria and then that same tube going to his lungs would be pushing parts of the kennelcough bacteria into the lungs. This along with the fact that it is common for a small amount of the saline water they used to flush to be left behind during the wash would cause a greater chance of the pnuemonia beginnning. Can anyone tell me if this is right from a veterinarian point of view?? |

| I'm so sorry for your loss. Ours was sick too but the vet never suggested a tracheal wash and I never heard of it till now. Usually if no other symptoms are going on that are harming the dog I would think procedures like this one are not necessary. They usually run its course on its own after giving the antibiotic. Have you tried calling another Vet? |

| I am a nurse too. Sounds like the diagnoses maked it worse. The antibiotics should have done the trick without a positive ID of what they already knew was probably the problem. So why take a risk with a tracheal wash? Sometimes the old vets are the best. They will just treat on symptoms and are less invasive.

| I did a random search and came across this thread... my 3 month old puppy is scheduled for a wash tomorrow morning. She started coughing this past Sunday. We've only had her a week. The vet did xrays today and said she does have pneumonia but the only way to know for sure what "kind" of pneumonia it is, is to do this wash. Otherwise we'd be flying in the dark on antibiotics. Any thoughts on this? |

| I would be very careful with this procedure? Besides coughing has there been any other problems with your puppies behavior? Our little guy ended up not making it and we are 99% sure that it was due to this procedure. Since then we have been in a long expensive battle with the vet but as of yet nothing has happened. All vets I have talked to have said that the procedure is more or less 100% safe. However, my puppy went into the vet completely normal (minus small cough) and came out on his death bed. Many vets I have talked to said that there are simple antibiotics you should try first before you do such an aggressive procedure. Have you gotten a second opinion? Do you trust your vet? I will think good thoughts for you and hope that everything goes well.
