Chewy (our dog) didnt get anything other than a perscription for Amoxicillin to be given to him 2xs a day for 10 days. Im really at the point that I just want answers, I have called a couple other vets (including the one that diagnosed him with the Amoxicillin) to see if the Tracheal Wash should have been done...

Please don't give up on your baby..I went through a similar ordeal..when I only had my baby for about 2 weeks...one night he started hacking like crazy I went to the vet and he said collapsed trachea..no xray no blood work just collapsed trachea...(my bf took him not me or I would of demanded these things)..next day I went for a second opinion..the vet said his trachea looked okay and to keep him on the antibiotics and see in a week..if the cough didn't go away we would again take a look at another xray..but it would be months before he would be ready to have a tube entered down his thorat to check out his trachea..if ever...THANK GOD..Maximus cough did go away but occassionally he does hack and I attribute it to reverse sneezing or allergies..wishful thinking???..I pray everyday that Maximus is okay and I would sooo get a second opinion before you make a decision..please pm me if you want any info..I'm in NY

He should of gotten a prescription for a)cough suppressant, b)anti-inflammatory..think that would be the amoxicillan and a shot the vet..when I get home I can post what Maximus was given..where are you located? I don't think the vet would admit wrong doing..but maybe you should check him out and bring him somewhere else before it is too late..if you are in NY..I will help

We are actually in Seattle, WA..The reason we can't take him anywhere else is that he needs oxygen at all time right now to live..I have a feeling that he had a bit of a cough and the tube just threw him over the edge. I have put in a call to two other Vets to see if the Vet is liable for this problem. Thanks for the help.

AWWWWWWW, Sweetie. I am so sorry to hear your baby is still so sick. I do know of one puppy from a pet shop in my area that had such similar circumstances. She did survive but the pet shop had to be threatened before they would pay the $5000.00+ vet bill...
As for broncheal washings---I personally have never heard of that treatment being done so soon in the progression of kennel cough or even pneumonia. I AM NOT A VET!!! but I do have an opinion on this..Get a second opinion before y'all make a decision. It is my understanding that not all vets are either equipped to do these procedures. My vet refers to a cardiac/resp vet...We talked about doing them with my heart of my heart, Jesse, but that was after several less invasive treatments failed. I DID have to make "the decision" but only after 3 winters of multiple hospitalizations for pneumonia.
The pet shop puppy I mentioned is "just okay". Maybe due to the illness and separations from her new family, she has real behavior issues and is not a happy, healthy Yorkie.
If you would like to PM me I might be able to give you more info including the e-mail addy of the owner of the other puppy..I do hope and pray your baby improves QUICKLY!

What was her reasoning for making the store pay the bill, how did she go about the process of making sure they paid it. We did not buy from a pet store but a breeder but want to know if they should be held responsible for the bills ($3,000+) they said they would refund us ($700) but that is obviously a small dent

Check you state laws. In some places you are only responsible up to the price of the pup if it is the breeder fault. Pet shops are different.

Yorkie Rose is right!! Each state is different.
But, my acquaintance consulted an attorney and was instructed to send a notarize, registered letter to the shop. The shop wanted her to bring the baby back to their vet on their payroll. BUT, most likely they would have elected NOT to treat but euthanize. The letter they wrote said that unless the shop agreed to pay the bills, their attorney would go public..and they were prepared to do that..

I am sorry that your baby is so sick... I know that the human body has an amazing ability to heal, I would think that this may be true for puppies also... if the puppy isn't in pain, maybe with rest and medical help it may recover.

I will keep you all in my thoughts

Oh, so sorry to hear about your puppy. I don't have any advice per se, but I would think that if your vet was sure he didn't do anything wrong, he wouldn't have a problem having another vet come in and check the puppy out to give you a second opinion. I pray everything works out for you.

I've very sorry to hear of your puppy, blykmyk44... I am also in Seattle, that's just a very tough decision to make if your puppy isn't getting any better. As others have said, the only thing may be to try to get another vet to go to where your puppy is now and get a 2nd opinion that way, if the emergency place would allow it. We're all pulling for you lil' guy!

I'm sorry about your puppy. Its so unfortunate that your puppy had a mild case of kennel cough and ends up worst after a procedure. I would get a 2nd opinion and do some research online about the trachea wash.
When we first got our puppy he also had a mild case of kennel cough. He would have these like sudden kinda gasping for air attacks. I described it that it sounded like a asthma attack. They happened everyday but not alot. He was also prescribed antibiotics for the 10days. Which we gave him and at the follow up appt...the vet didnt seem too concerned about him getting any worse..his lungs were clear but we were still worried that he was still having that hacking even after the antibiotic treatment. Vet said sometimes it takes weeks, months for it to go away. He was right. With no further treatments my pup was all better by 3-4weeks. He doesnt have those gasping for air attacks anymore.
I certainly hope your puppy pulls through this...I'll be praying
