| [News] Yorkie Stolen from Pet Store While I really dislike pet stores selling Yorkies, this is still sad. I hope that Yorkie is safe and healthy. $1800 seems like an excessive price for a Yorkie as well! --- North Lawrence, NY - Someone stole a 10-week-old Yorkshire Terrier from its cage at Pet Works, on Rockaway Turnpike in North Lawrence, last Friday, and the managers are so concerned about the animal-s health that they said they would not press charges if it is safely returned. Our biggest concern is that it gets the proper care, said a manager of Pet Works, at 605 Rockaway Turnpike, who did not want to be identified. It-s 10 weeks old. The puppy needs to eat four to five times a day. In addition, the manager stressed that since the animal is so young, it needs to be fed a high-calorie vitamin supplement every three hours or it could develop a low blood sugar condition, hypoglycemia, and slip into a coma. It could have a seizure or go into shock, the Pet Works manager said. We have contacted mostly all the veterinarians in the area, and if someone brings it in and leaves it there with them, we will not press charges, the manager said. The store is also offering a cash reward for the safe return of the terrier, but the amount of the reward was not disclosed. The puppy is worth about $1,800, the manager said. The manager also offered this message to the person who stole the puppy: Please bring the dog back, for the health and well-being of the animal. According to Fourth Squad detectives, a man walked into the pet shop at around 6 p.m. on April 9 and tried to enter an employees--only room, but he did not have the code to unlock the door. The man then walked through a short hallway to a grooming area, which is also supposed to be restricted to employees, removed the puppy from its cage and concealed the animal inside his jacket, said Detective Sgt. Willard Miller. It-s kind of unusual, Miller said of a dog being taken from a pet shop. The owner was informed by an employee that the dog was missing from the cage, he added. The Yorkshire Terrier is a very popular breed of dog. The store manager said, It-s a very valuable dog, a very small dog. It can go up to only 4 pounds, which is why he was able to conceal it. I really don-t know what he wants to do with it. He may try to sell it or may want to give it to his girlfriend as a gift. The theft was discovered about an hour after the animal was taken, when a worker saw the empty cage. Store managers then reviewed a videotape from a closed-circuit security camera, which captured the man taking the puppy. A copy of the tape was turned over to the Nassau County Police Department. We have a video of him coming in and taking it out of the cage, the manager said. The dog, which was put on display on Wednesday, April 7, two days before the theft, is a female, black-and-tan Yorkie weighing 1 1/2 to 2 pounds and measuring 6 to 7 inches long. The store manager said that most people don-t realize how much care a puppy like that needs. It-s so small and delicate that the main concern is for its health, the manager said. The manager added that this was the first time since the store opened seven years ago that an animal had been stolen. The person who took the dog apparently knows his way around the shop, which leads the manager to believe it may have been an inside job. The suspect is described as a black man, about 25 years old, 5 feet 10, with a medium build. He was wearing a dark baseball cap with a red B on it, a dark denim jacket with a zipper pocket on the right shoulder and lettering on the left side of the chest, dark pants and a dark shirt, police said. Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers at (800) 244-TIPS. All calls will be kept strictly confidential, police said. http://www.zwire.com/site/news.cfm?n...d=479855&rfi=6 |

| All the pet stores I see have the dogs in tiny, little cages. I hope the Yorkie is okay! Poor lil' girl, she deserves a good home! |
