Default 2nd vet visit today. . .opened my eyes a bit.

Uno went in for his next vaccination today, and poor baby. . .They found 2 mites and a couple of larvae (ew!) in his ears so not only did he have his shot, he had this stuff put on his back (Revolution for puppies/cats) to treat the mites. Oh, and his nail trim. . .I asked about the side affects from the vaccination, and the vet said he may be sleepy. . . Well, we got home at close to 9:30, laid on the couch, and we both didn't wake up until after 12 noon. . . . . . . . . .(I'm sleep deprived with this pup!) He went outside to do his business, and he's soooo sleepy still. He's sleeping now! Question: Were/are your puppies very sleepy after their vaccinations???

Second, at Uno's puppy exam he weighed in at 2.9 lbs. . ..Well, now at 13 weeks he's 3.5!!!! The vet said that he's starting to get a little too plump. . .My breeder said she wanted him to have unlimited food for 3 weeks (keep it in his pen)...? Well, i'm going to go with the vet on this one and do the feeding 3 times a day...

And third (long post, apologies ) the vet taught me how to put him in a sort of hold/brace when he bites/nips to show him i'm boss. I have to admit, I would 'try' to dominate him, but I would always feel bad when he whined. . .It was miraculous to see...Uno was trying to bite, she put her thumb and index finger around his mouth and had her hand on his lower neck. He completely complied for her....then when it was 'my turn' to try he was awful and biting me. . .I have let him be in charge for too long. . . I was such a wuss before, but it's time to be the pack leader...as cesar would say

Sorry for the long post, just super excited to find something that actually works in terms of showing him it's not ok....

I've heard that some pups are lethargic after immunizations. I think it's normal. I'm still struggling with the "pack leader" thing too and my boys are 2 and 3. Your doing right by starting it early!!

I am pretty good at being a pack leader, and both dogs walk and mind me pretty well. But omg, my husband stinks at it. UNTIL the other night he FINALLY sat down and watched a Dog Whisperer episode with the Yorkies and the Police Officer dad. He was inspired. The next two mornings, we went for a walk with him holding Coby's (a wild 5 months old) leash and nothing but a different attitude (energy). He was absolutely blown away by the difference in the walk. Coby was a bit confused at first, like, "who is this guy trying to walk me when it's my job to walk him???" But he caught on. My husband enjoyed the walks SO much more AND he felt so empowered.

There is really something to the pack leader philosophy!!

Sorry about the ear thingies, but he sounds adorable. Congratulations on becoming "pack leader." It's not always easy, but so necessary. You don't have to follow Cesar M. in every single way, but it's important to be in charge.

Well Uno had a bit of a rough day. Not only did we have out ears cleaned, nails trimmed, shot, but he puked I probably shouldn't have brought him, but we started puppy class tonight. I wanted to cry. I felt so bad, he is terrified of other dogs, and of course we were the smallest in the puppy class. Thank goodness there was one other small puppy, a maltese/bichon mix. Uno wasn't having it, we were "that" student....he hid behind anything, and would cozy himself in between my ankles hoping to go unnoticed. This week our homework is to try and walk on a leash without pulling. MY goal is to just get him to walk, period! I think I will enroll him in doggy daycare for a couple days out of the week to help him become better socialized. I feel like a bad mommy when he doesn't want to play with other kids...I always worry about the fact he was an only pup and didn't have brothers and sisters.

Oh- before I forget....does/has anyone else use/used the method where you place your fingers around their mouth/muzzle? and just give them a firm hold on the body to stop them from biting? I know a lot of people have reservations about holding their mouths shut, just wondering what the success rate was for those who tried it. Tonight I did it everytime he wanted to eat my hand, and although we had some REAL hard bites (I mean, ferociously hard, with growling of course) I made sure to always get my hold on him even through the pain. . .

Hi...aww sounds like he might have just been worn out...Lucy is going to her second-training class tonight...last week she had two accidents inside, I'm hoping this week she doesn't have any of those... (sorry way off-topic)

As far as the play biting goes, we're going through the same thing and it's rough...I just wrap my hand around her muzzle and say "NO BITE" and then I give her a bone or a toy to chew on. If she still goes after my fingers, I say NO BITE again and show her the toy. If she does it again I stand up and ignore her, when she stops trying to bite me (we're clicker training) I click and give her a treat. Now if she's still biting then she gets a 2-3 min. time out in her kennel.

Have you gotten her any teething toys? Lucy seems to really enjoy her Orbee teething bone, this other teething bone (forget the brand we got at Petsmart) it has like a flexible plastic tube with some strings that come out the ends, and also the puppy kong...Good luck!

OH and the weight thing don't worry, Lucy was 3.1 pounds at 13 weeks and at 16 weeks weighed 3.8 pounds (3 pounds, 12 ounces)

My goodness Uno has toys galore....Puppy kong, Chilly bone (wet it and stick in freezer), a spiky rubber circle (which he's chewing on in my lap at the moment ), and other toys.

However...my puppy kong was supposed to come with a free sample......never did!!!it was empty...no wonder he doesn't like that one as much, maybe i'll put peanut butter in it?

I haven't gotten my order of puppy ziggies yet so last night I put some of Lucy's kibble and a little peanut butter to plug the hole and put it into the freezer for an hour or two. It kept her occupied for about a half-hour. So you should get it a shot!

Oh, Uno probably didn't feel good for puppy class. Mine are always really tired and sore after a shot. One of my yorkies gets so miserable after his shots that he yipes even if I touch him. The vet lets me give him 1/4 of a baby aspirin for shots now.

I'm sure he'll be braver at his next puppy class when he feels better.

I never did the placing your fingers around the mouth but what worked for all the puppies I ever had and raised is to pick them up like the mom would by the scruff of the neck and say NO BITE!. This had worked for all my dogs and even my older one still know if I pick them up by the back of the neck they are in trouble. It doesn't hurt them and they know it doesn't allow bad behavior. I also use a water bottle to squirt puppies if they try to chew on furniture. It works well also.

Kalina took a long nap with me after she got her last shot, but then she woke up and was back to normal. She is 18 weeks and up to 3 1/2 lbs. She has been gaining a lot lately. I don't feed her 3 times a day, just 2 times. I feed her in the morning and evening around 6PM. I leave a little kibble out for her during the day, but she hardly touches it.
