| Rimadyl? Have any of you given your babies Rimadyl? I know some dogs have had some bad reactions to it (I've actually only heard about large breed dogs with problems). Gracie injured her hip somehow and her vet prescribed Rimadyl for 10 days. If it's not better we're going to xray it (although the vet thinks she pulled a muscle from how she reacts when examined). I'm a bit concerned about the Rimadyl. |

| I had to give my son black lab this after she was kick by a horse and now has problems with her shoulder, she been fine on it , it does help with the pain I don't know about long term , she off and on them , my vet told us that long term it will cause liver problems, I have heard of dogs dieing from it also. but we have tried a lot of other meds and nothing works as well as this, they will do a liver test if a dog is on for a long time. my vet suggest we go awhile and then go off a while millie is 3yrs old she been on it for 1yr now, right now she been off for 4mos, winter is worst time. or if she swim a lot, so we try to limit that. |

| Ginger has used it... Hello. I have not had any experience with Rimadyl on small dogs, but I did have to give it to my female shepherd Ginger for a while. We rescued Ginger when she was about 18 months of age. When I brought her home I could tell there was something wrong with her hips. I called the rescue right away and they said, oh its common blah blah blah. Well, why wasn't I told about this common problem? That's another story. But we liked Ginger and wanted to keep her. Her vet said it may not be a long term problem and that the Rimadyl only needed to be taken for a short time. She did fine with it. We gave her the Rimadyl along with joint joice (chondriton) and she got better quickly. She is fine now. Although, there is a visible ifference on how she moves and how my male shepherd, Diablo, who I raised from 6 wks moves. The medication she got was really large, like a horse pill. I'm sure the dose is adjusted for the babies. Is this something your baby absolutely has to take? I too heard it was a pretty serious drug for a dog of any size to take. So we watched Ginger very carefully. Hope this helps some. And please let me know if there is anything else I can help with!

| This medicine was prescribed for my yorkie after a surgery when he was 1yr old, and he had a horrific reaction to this medicine. He almost died while on Rimadyl. He was extremely lethargic and vomitting profusely. It was the scariest thing in the world. We thought we were losing him, and we had no idea what was causing it until I went online and saw that the dog could go into liver failure... We told the vet, and they said he would be fine on it. We said nope...My hubby and I immediately stopped the medicine, and he started getting better within a day or two. I know it was the medicine. If your dog has ANY type of liver issues or kidney issues at all, I do not recommend this medicine. I know it is helpful for some dogs, and I'm only speaking about our experience....

I Love My Lil' Punkin's Donating Member | This is really scaring me now! Our vet prescribed Rimadyl for Tatum to help with pain after her spay yesterday. I just gave her some! She only takes a .25 tablet once a day for 12 days. Now I'm worried! I hope this is ok to give her???

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | Guys calm down!!!! Rimadyl just like any other medication for people or animals can cause a reaction in a small percentage. Just like you can be allergic to something, your dog can be allergic to something as well. This is a common prescribed anti-inflammatory. It works well. Liver problems only occur if your dog is on them for a long time (months and years, not days) It is safe for use after surgeries and for short term problems. If its prescribed for a long time, blood should be taken prior to being put on it and then done every 6 months so that a problem can be caught early if something is to happen.

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | 12 days for a spay???? that's alittle excessive. We give 10 days of anti-inflammatory after a major orthopedic surgery. Morgan was sent home with Rimadyl after her spay too. I have her .25mg the next day and then she got nothing else. She didn't need it. If Tate gets this med in the morning then tomorrow i would wait a couple hours before giving it to her to see if she even needs it.

I'm not saying that Rimadyl is bad for all dogs...I'm saying to be careful and watch for signs: Decrease or increase in appetite Vomiting Change in bowel movements (such as diarrhea, or black, tarry or bloody stools) Change in behavior (such as decreased or increased activity level, incoordination, seizure or aggression) Yellowing of gums, skin, or whites of the eyes (jaundice) Change in drinking habits (frequency, amount consumed) Change in urination habits (frequency, color, or smell) Change in skin (redness, scabs, or scratching) It is important to stop therapy and contact your veterinarian immediately if you think your dog has a medical problem or side effect from Rimadyl therapy. If you have additional questions about possible side effects, talk to your veterinarian. This is straight from www.rimadyl.com

this is very true. If your dog has a known liver or kidney problem then no they shouldn't be put on Rimadyl. Hopefully your vet has enough knowledge to not do this. All of our patients that come in have pre-op blood work done so we can screen for this and know which anti-inflammatory to put them on. Most cases we put on Rimadyl. A smaller percentage we put on Deramaxx. Alot of small dogs tho, we put on Meloxicam, aka Metacam.

| Hallee was on it and she did just fine. No side effects for her. Vet thought she had LP in both back legs. He gave her that. Went to specialist and it was torn aCL's not LP. She just had surgery on her left leg two weeks ago. After it heals then we will do the right leg.

| Charlie took Rimadyl for his first dental surgery. Rimadyl reduces inflammation after surgery. His dental surgery last week, the dental vet prescribed Metacam for four days. No reaction and imagine having major surgery and nothing to reduce the swelling? Painful. However, do not give with aspirin or NSAIDS.

Donating YT 500 Club Member | Ozzie has been on this a few times. He's never had any trouble with it, though I've heard of cases where dogs have. In fact, I gave him a dose the other night because, out of the blue, he was limping. I think my old guys is getting arthritis. Seemed to make him feel better. He was fine the next morning and been OK since. |
