| Yorkie's coat Hi, I have a female Yorkie (Kady) who I love dearly. She is 9 1/2 pounds, one year old, and hasn't got the full coat you see everywhere in books and online. She has the black and tan coloring, but there's no way her coat reaches the floor (instead just under her belly) and it's more ragged looking, cotony in places. The hair on top of her head is a bit silky, but not nearly long enough for a bow. She's my little love, but I'm wondering if she's an Australian terrier since she looks so "wild" and curly even. Or maybe Yorkie's don't get their full coats for another year or so?? Can anyone tell me if it takes that long to get the full Yorkie coat? thnx |

| She probably has the cottony coat and odds are it will never get floor legnth. I have a female that has never had a hair cut, but she is a cotton/wooly coat and she is 6 years old and still does not have floor legnth hair. She also stayed black in color and her gold is sooty colored. Doesn't change the fact that we still love her to death, but her hair breaks off very easily. Her brother's hair is worse so I shave him down every spring and then let him grow until the next spring, his hair tangles and mats so bad, and he hates to be brushed, so the shaving makes him a happy boy and works for me too. |

| Yorkie coat Dear MM, thanks for replying to my question about Kady's coat. Another question I have is about her weight....she's 9 1/2 lbs and everything I read says they stop at 7 lbs and that the Silky and Australian terriers grow to be somewhat larger. I don't know what I would do without my Kady and never believed it possible to fall so in love with a dog.... Can you tell me if your little boy and girl have similar temperments? |

| Thanks Jerry...excuse my ignorance about these msg ctrs, but I have to ask, is that a picture of your yorkie next to your name? If yes, he/she is so cute...I didn't know you could put pictures up here. And I didn't know yorkies could get up to 12 pounds either!! Between her rough black coat and being so big, I was thinking maybe she was a mix, which doesn't matter a bit to me, but I'd stop trying to smooth her coat out and trying to put a bow on the top of my little chewbaca wild thing!! (In fact her nickname is wookie or wook for short..hah!) |

| I am surprised at the number of people lately who mention the coats don't grow in length. Both of mine had coats that grew like a weed! I didn't know there was that much difference in coat growth.

| Teddy has silky hair but only on his head. The rest of his body isnt what i would call cottony, i think its more wavy. So we keep him in a puppy cut but I think he looks adorable. (im posting a couple of pics so u can have more of an idea) But I wanted to ask u, when the light reflects off his eyes is it like a blue color or is it red? Teddy's is red which from what I've read is also a characteristic of a curly coat. Maybe this will give u more insight as to why he has this coat!

| Teddy reminds me of my Roxie. A little wavy- still 97% percent black at 1 years old, silky on the head. The funny thing is that I do have to cut her every 6-8 weeks to maintain the short coat. For some strange reason her hair grows fast. By the way, the eyes glow red/orange too!

| All I can say here is,try not to look at too many yorkie books because in my experience you will only get frustrated Im saying this because I have 2 yorkies and even though Iv NEVER cute their hair (at 2 and almost 2 years old) it has never and will never reach the floor either I bought and was given lots of books and magazines on yorkies and when ever I flicked through the pages I would get upset because all the yorkies in the books had super long shiney straight black and tan coats, whilst my yorkies seemed to have short, thin hair (only 3 inches long).I used to get so upset by this and at one point I even went to see the breeder about this thinking that she had tricked me,she even paid for the dna tests to prove me wrong and clear her name. But after 2 years with my girls and 2 years of visiting yorkie forums,Iv realised that the coats my girls have are more common that I thought..infact,the long perfect coats you see in books are quite rare and hard to come by,even if you are a proffesional breeder If you would like to see my girls coats I will be glad to send you pictures, just let me know I dont know how to put them on here Try not to worry Im sure your baby is just perfect |

| Those coats you see in the pictures in magazines are really nice, but it takes a lot of work to get them like that. The coats have to be wrapped to be protected, the dogs should not be allowed on carpet if you want nice hair. the carpeting breaks the hair off when they play. You have to put oil on the coat when youu wrap it so that it does not dry out, and wash and condition with good products. When you wrap a coat, you have to re-wrap it at least every other day so that the hair does not get tangled near the skin. I have dogs with those nice coats, they are my show dogs, my pets I cut down because it is too much trouble to tend to all my dogs coats. I have 5 that are in show coats now, and I am tending to their coats everyday as soon as I get home from work. |

Yorkie Lover Donating Member | Sailor has a cottony coat and so far it is still slowly...we brush her eveyday and that has really seemed to help with tangles!! I will try to find a picture of her to show you and then post it. She is 7lbs and our cuddlely teddy bear!!
