| Help! have to wean puppies early My dam has had a problem with an engorged (to the point of possible infection) milk sac since the puppies were born three weeks ago. I have tried to get them to nurse in a different area, and she pushes them right back to where they started. They are now three weeks old, and the vet said that I should start weaning them so I can make sure that they are getting enough to eat. This is the second day.....and things seem to be going well so far. They seem to be a little more active and alert. Does anyone have any tips on weaning they would like to share?

| Are you actually weaning or bottle feeding? I lost a boxer mom when the pups were 6 days old. I bottle fed them, every four hours, until they were six weeks. Near the end, I would begin adding a little baby rice cereal to their milk and then soak their kibble in the formula. The only problem you might have with this is finding a nipple small enough. I can't imagine they're able to actually chew food right now. PM me if you need any advice from a bottle-feeding standpoint. Thank goodness, with eight of them, I had lots of help at feeding time! |
