| New Puppy Anxiety Hello Everyone, I have so many questions about my new puppy! First of all let me introduce him, his name is Riley and he is 9 weeks old. I have never been so in love with anything in my whole life, I really feel like he is my child! I have only had him for 5 days and I am wondering if I am doing ok as a "parent". I bought him from a breeder, he came with a little cough/sneeze that has gotten alot worse. I took him to the vet and he said that he has sinusitis and that it should go away slowly...he also just got his first set of vaccines. He didnt give me anything to give him, but I feel as though his "cold" has gotten worse. It is like he is trying to sneeze something up but nothing comes out. Last night he had a little sneezing "attack". I am getting so worried. From researching on the web I found out that he should be on anti-biotics. My question is has anyone experienced this before....and if so how long does it normally take before his "cold" goes away? If it doesnt start to get better by Monday I am going to call the vet again. Any advice for a new mommy? Thanks, Carolina Oh I also have MAJOR ANXIETY about leaving him home when I go back to teaching in a week!!! I have a set up for him in the kitchen but I feel so quilty leaving him!!!! Help!!!! |

| Congrats on your new baby! It could be an upper respitory infection and that would need antibiotics - I would call another vet - a second opinion never hurt. Best of luck. Post pics soon! |

| I took two weeks off when I got Kodak and I kept him in the kitchen to. I made his cage really comfy with a nice blanket and pillow and his favorite toy inside. I put his other toys out on one side of the kitchen with peepads on the other side. I would leave the radio on so he would always here talking and music. I had a refillable waterdish so he always had water and I kept his food dish out. I took him outside first thing in the morning before I went to work, my mom would come take him out in the afternoon. I would take him out when I got off work so he sorta had a routine. It worked out, and I kept a baby gate up so he wouldn't leave his peepads to go in another room and use it. He occasionally had accidents but he always used the pads. I gave him a treat every time I saw him use the pads. So he did real good being confined to one room to get potty trained. I missed him during the day and he looked sad when I left, but he was so happy when I got home. 3yrs later I got him a playmate and now they both look sad, but at least they have each other.

| Thank you all for your advice...about the anxiety I have been trying to get out of the house for an hour or 2 every day so "I" get used to it...I also have a setup in my kitchen...in there I have his crate (left open) a pee pad, food/water, toys, and another cushion. He can see the rest of the apartment through a gate that I bought. He seems very content in there but I am "psycho" and feel guilty..lol Riley doesnt cry, just goes to sleep. He is such a good boy and seems to adapt to any situation I can put in him thus far. Except the car. He hates riding in the car...all he wants to do is walk around instead of just relaxing on my lap or in his bag/carrier...Oh well....he is perfect enough for me!!! About his "cold" I called his breeder today and she told me that it should go away within a few days...I dont want to overreact and keep calling the vet...he told me it was like us having a "cold"...he will get through it...he doesnt have a fever and still eats and plays ALOT!!! I just get so nervous; this MY first baby...I cant imagine how I will be when I give birth to my own children..AHHHHHH!!! Once again Thank you to everyone who has shared...this site it really nice |

| Welcome to YT! When I first got Aubrey, he had a little cough, and they gave me this liquid medicine to give to him... Did you ask if there was anything that you could give him? |

It's a Yorkie Thing Donating Member | First Welcome to YT. Now calm down. If you've been to your vet, (and you trust your vet) and he says to wait a couple days...then wait and see what happens. If for any reason you believe that the vet you've choosen (since this is your first fur kid) is not doing all that you want. Then find another and get another opinion. However don't be upset if that one says the same thing. Something no one ask was: did your pup go from being in an kennel away from AC then into your AC house? That may be the problem if so. He may just need to get a customed to the AC. If the cough DOES NOT go away in a few days. I would have him checked again for possible Kennel cough or something else. GOOD LUCK!

| My vet is a vet that I trust very much. He has taken care of all my pets growing up. So thats that, but it still scares me because they are human too and make mistakes. As for the AC, he was raised in a house in AC. My mom bought Riley's brother from the same breeder and he also has a cough. The vet told me that it was Kennel Cough, but more specifically sinusitis...He said it would get better little by little.....but i dont think it has. If anything I may call him on Monday and see if I can give him an anti-biotic. I am scheduled to see him in two weeks anyways for Riley's shots.

| WELCOME!! how cute is he!!! you might try brining him in the bathroom and run hot water in the tub... let him breath in the steam... or if you have a humidifier. Layla had Kennel Cough and she was on antibiotics so it didn't develop further but it took months to go away! so hang in there! as for anxiety and leaving.. yup... been there!!! make sure he has lots of interactive toys and a crate that he can curl up in to feel safe... leave the tv on for him or the radio... and try and get home if you can or have somoene come and visit him .. i KNOW you are going to br crying inside when you leave but make it no big deal... use a key phrase (i say... Layla i will be RIGHT BACK) and then i leave.. no big deal... and same when you come in.. dont' make a big fuss.. just say hi.. let him out and maybe give him a treat. this way he'll be thinking.. ok she leave.. no biggie and then she comes back and i get a treat! another idea is to have one toy he ONLY Gets when he is alone so that he can look forward to that and make the connetion that getting this toy means you leave but then you come back! |
