| sick newborn? I need advice- I have a 5 day old puppy, and he has a runny nose and his nose sounds stuffy, I tried to listen to his lungs, but he cries when I try. Do I wait to call the vet in the am (it is 11:20pm here) or should I call the emergency vet? He is getting amoxicillian through his mamas milk. My husbands tells me to relax, but I am worried- he is eating very well, gained 3 oz since birth- you can just hear is nose is stuffy, and runny while he eats. please tell me what is best to do... his littermates seem fine, I checked them out.. they are not exposed to drafts or anything. Thanks in advanced, I will return all the help I have been given when things slow down here... promise |

| Can you just call an emergency vet to see if you need to go in? Does he seem in distress? If so, I would take him somewhere, if not, call and see what they tell you.

| I called they said it could wait until tomorrow since he is eating, then I noticed another one sneezing. I wonder if it is from washing their bedding- since that is all that changed? they said if I would feel better i can go to them, they are open 24-7 but this isn't a real emergancy. I wonder if I was this worried when I had a baby? I hope I can rest easy some day soon- maybe when they hit ten days and can regulate their body temp better- lol, nah I will probably worry forever about them. Thanks, I don't know why I didn't think to just call them, it isn't like I haven't called them already I will just keep a close eye on them all night, again. have a good night |

| Can you make a croup tent? Bet you are too young to even know what it is. It is an old timey remedy that my vet still uses. I just put a warm (or cold) water humidifier close to the pen and cover the whole thing with a sheet. The moisture stays in. DO NOT LET THE BABIES GET WET OR CHILLED! No temp, I presume? I use a disk that I warm in microwave as a heat source for the babies is needed..keep a real close check on them during the night to make sure they are close to mom and that she is feeding them. You are definitely gonna be sleep deprived tomorrow. If onestarts struggling to breathe try to suction t the nose and mouth to get any mucus. Don't do the swingy thing that we do to get newborns to breathe cause that will cause the stomach contents to come up. Aspiration pneumonia could result.. I am a nurse, but I am a parent when it comes to tese babies. I beat feet to the vet for everything, but the ER are so outrageously expensive and sometimes,I am inclined to try to work homeopathic treatments first.. Good Luck with your babies.. |

I have the EXACT situation going on and have asked for advice here at YT. It started with one male, then another, then a third, now all four have it. Is it like a little cold, more sneezing than coughing? They rarely cough, but when they do they gag a little. Took them all to the vet when only one had it. She gave me a liquid antibiotic and said to keep an eye on the rest of them. Well, they all eat at the same buffet and they all got it. I keep Tiah's belly cleaned off all the time, and do whatever it takes to keep the pups healthy. I couldn't see how they could get a cold when I was SO CAREFUL. the vet just said, "It happens". The anitibiotic runs out today and I will be taking them back. They all still have it. No caughing anymore, but the all have the sniffles (which is clear, not infected looking). Since I seem to be ahead of you on this one, I'll let you know what the vet does and says. | |

| I called my vet, right when they opened... they will give him the message to call me. They are all still warm and eating, and gaining weight. I will let you know what he says. Julz how old are your puppies? Please let me know what your vet says, I appreciate it. I am going to get a vaporizer today, but do I put vicks in it? I did that with my children when they were sick... I am not sure if you do that with puppies. How close to I have it to the babies? They are in the corner of a 20x20 room, they get no breeze in this corner that is why they are there, they are under a table also, to make sure there is no breeze hitting them, with a blanket drapped in front of it, so they don't get a breeze from the other room... it sounds like it is a jail, but really it is the spot of the house that doesn't fluctuate in temp... anyways, would I put the vaporizer on top of the table (it is a high top table, we all can sit under it, it is rectangular) or would I put the vaporizer in another area? I will post a pic of their set up as soon as my batteries are charged. So you can see it isn't as bad as it sounds.. lol. It is quite cozy really... I will let you know what the vet says.. thanks so much for your help |
