gender confused yorkie? Ok, I know this sounds awkward, but I think Alexis thinks she's a boy. She squats but lifts her leg when she pees and she constantly tries to mount Nomi. Nomi being the lady she is, let her get away with it the first few times, but now growls when she does it. This is not helping them to get along. The bad thing about it is that Alexis does this to Nomi all day. Any experience dealing with this and if so, is there a way to break her of these tendencies?

didn't know that! Do they normally stop once they figure out who is the dominant one? For some reason I always associated dominance with size. I figured Nomi is the alpha female because she is bigger. Is this not the case?

It is also a feel good issue. If she's spayed, doesn't mean the hormones are gone.

Was your dog around many male dogs? They can learn peeing with lifting their leg from the male. My sister's dog does this and the reason is because she was around many male dogs. Rosie also humps her toys a lot. This is a dominance thing. As others said, correct the behavior. Hopefully if she's not as stubborn as Rosie she will eventually learn and stop.

Some do and some don't. Both of them are spayed, my intact females squat and have been around males since they were born.

They hump toys too? I always thought that was just something that they had dogs do in movies! We've had Alexis for about a month and she is about a year old. In her last house they had another female yorkie. We have a male lab here, but she was doing the lifting the leg thing as soon as we got her. We will be doing a whole lot of correcting. Nomi can't stand it when Alexis tries to mount her. I am fearful that Alexis is going to get bit. Thank you both for clarifying this for me!

Mardelin, I guess having her spayed would help too? Nomi is and Alexis (the humper) isn't as of yet. Last edited by Nomiland; 07-27-2007 at 03:29 PM. Reason: spelling

Emmy also does the squat/leg lift. She also seems to mark when we walk in the neighborhood. I've read that some female terriers will mark, again it's a dominance thing.

| Sasha lifts her leg when she potties sometimes, I just figured that it is due to the fact she watches her brother lift his leg. As long as she lifts that tiny leg outside I am thrilled
