| Collapsing Trachea I know that Yorkies are prone to collapsing tracheas, but has anyone ever heard of this in a 6 week old puppy? Also, is this always caused by a physical trauma or can it just happen for no reason? Are there any other health problems that mimic the symptoms of a collapsing trachea? Thanks |

| Oh, and the reason I am asking is because my breeder called and told me there was a problem with my pup, so I went to see and she said when she started weaning him he would choke on anything that wasn't milk and would make this terrible coughing gasping sound and his little tongue would turn blue like he couldn't breathe. She said she had never seen a collapsing trachea in such a young puppy so she took him to two different vets and one said collapsing trachea and one said it was just a very bad chest cold kind of like bronchitis and put the puppy on antibiotics. I am really upset about this and I feel so terrible for the breeder because she seemed so upset, but I really appreciate how honest she has been with me about the whole ordeal. She offered me a full refund or my choice of other pups in the litter, so I chose one in the event that it is not a really bad cold that will clear up. Has anyone ever experienced anything like this or heard of a puppy having similar symptoms? |

My furkids Donating Member | I am so sorry to hear this. Maybe it's allergies? Sadie (3 yrs old) does the reverse sneezing (there is a post on here that has an audio/video where you can hear what it sounds like). Sadie has done the reverse sneezing before but, last week I noticed she was doing it more frequent...it just so happens that I have allergies and my allergies were kicking my butt last week. I am better this week and so is she...I would suggest maybe ask the vet if allergies could be a possibility for the puppy...I hope he's going to be ok.

My Vet told me that puppies who are prone to collapsing trachea will usually cough a little bit if you press on their throats. I don't know about it happening spontaneously. If you haven't taken the puppy yet I would wait to see if he is ok. I wouldn't take him just because I "felt sorry" for him or because I had already fallen in love with him. A sick puppy can cost a lot of money. Good luck with whatever you decide.

| As bad as I feel for the puppy, I will not take him if this doesn't clear up. I am a college student and I don't have the money to commit to a lifetime of vet bills if I can avoid it. |

Bella Boo & Diggy Too! Donating GS Member | I agree with Sookie....take to the vet and get him checked! He may just be having a hard time with solid food and the feel of it.

| I'm just having a hard time with it because both vets said it will be a wait and see thing, but the breeder said she doesn't know how much longer the mother will let the puppy nurse and since it can't eat anything else without choking, she doesn't know how much longer the puppy will survive if his symptoms don't improve. Even though I haven't brought him home yet I have been to visit every week since he was born and I am already really attached to him. And it's not that the other puppy she has reserved for me is any different (they look almost identical except for a small white patch on the chest) its just that I think of this one as mine. Oh well, there's really nothing anyone can do except hope that it gets better. Thanks for your answers everyone. |

| collapsing When we brought Zoey home I spent a lot of money at the vet because she hacked(coughed) all of the time and I was so worried. It was especially bad whenever she'd come back from playing at Bella's house(diggy 4) and I thought maybe it was their cat(allergies), the vet explained that yorkies have collapsing tracheas and they are very small openings. Some nights it was so bad she was up every 1/2 hour coughing and i losing sleep. Finally I realized that it was all the exercise. When she went to Bella's they would play and play and she'd have more episodes just like know when her and Boston are running around the house, after so much she'll start hacking and I'll have to tell her that's enough. I think maybe when she was younger it was worse because her body was still growing so maybe that's what's going on with yours? Hope this helps. |
