| those familiar with luxating patella Our 5 1/2 month old yorkie has started to do a little hop on his back leg when we go for walks. I don't notice it when he is running or playing. We also have quite a few stairs, and he seems to have no trouble with them. So if it is a mild case of this, would it be possible for me to only notice it when he walks, or would I also see it when he is running around? thanks for any input, I really hope this is not what is wrong with his leg. |

| Diesel just had surgery on his left leg for Luxating Pattella. He never acted like it hurt or anything. He could walk and do stairs, he just kind of walked a little funny. Well we decided to get an xray and he had one of the worst cases they have ever seen. He was born with it, and learned to deal with the pain. You should get him to the vet just incase. hope it not anything to serious. I'll be praying for your little baby.

| I asked the Vet about luxating patellas last night when I took Kalina for her check-up. She said that her legs are fine now, but that LP often worsens and shows up as the dog gets older (although sometimes it is noticeable immediately and, if they are going to have it later they usually have "loose" patellas as puppies). She said one of the signs is hopping on three legs and another one is they will stretch out one of their legs and the knobby part will pop back into the joint but you think they are just stretching. Usually there isn't much pain in the beginning and it can be corrected with surgery like Diesel just had if it's a bad case. It's really something that you just have to keep an eye on and have your Vet check every time you take your dog there. In many cases it's mild and the dog just gets by fine.

| Surgery isn't necessary for a grade 2 LP, but if it's a 3 or 4 then yes, it needs to be corrected right away. My Zada had a grade 3 in both knees, so she had those corrected at the same time. My Azrael has a grade 2 and may never get worse. |

| Go to the vet and have them tell you what grade it is. Loki and Sammy both have grade 2-3 in one knee. Loki rarely has trouble, maybe once every 2-3 months. When his pops out it takes him a while to get it to pop back in. Sammy I notice limping occasionally, but only for like 3 steps then she is fine. The vet says they are not in pain and I give them glucosamine. I would consider surgery only if their mobility is hindered. Like if you take daily walks and they can't even finish the walk, then I'd consider it.
