| So I was in denial, we must paper train...HELP! Hello everyone!! I do think it's important to let you all know that we are all a bit ADD around here. So with that said...I coming here to ask for your help once again. It seems that here at home we have tendencies of forgetting to walk Luna thus we have been having many, many accidents as of late. Yes, human error I know, do not worry we haven't really scolded her for it. But, I am so afraid that this is confusing her because we are not being consistent. We have decided to start paper training Luna that way she can go in the house at a certain place instead of going out and in. The only thing is that when we leave a wee wee pad out she starts biting it. What I did today was make sure to spoil it with her own pee that way, hopefully, she will recognize that as something not to play with. I've been so frustrated with walking her because she doesn't always go when we take her and then 15 mins later she'll go inside, again I know this is human error. We really aren't those type of people to be so consistent in taking her out because we simply forget. I'm so ashamed to admit it, but it's true. And we don't want her to be a confused puppy for her whole life so please please help me out here... any suggestions are greatly appreciated! Another thing is that I think she is getting basic training confused. Once she sees treats she dashes straight to the rug and sits there waiting for a treat. So I don't even have the chance to command her to sit, lol. I know that, that is just a matter of time when she'll get the hang of sitting on command or following other commands soon enough but my question is... is it better for me to stick with teaching her one command a week, then introducing a new command the next week, or can I mix the commands like 5 mins of learning to sit and 5 mins of learning to stay... Thanks so much in advance! sincerely, your very confused yorkie friend (LOL)

| Don't worry Melissa, we've ALL been there at some point! Training takes a lot of patience, if she gets basic commands down, I think you can mix in different commands and add a new one every week or so. As for going pee pee outside, she just needs to learn that outside is the place to go, or a bin with a pee pee pad in it is the place to go. Trying to consistently take her out (perhaps when you wake up, or after you eat) near the same times each day will help her routine out a bit! |

| We went back and forth on whether or not we should train Hercules to go outside or on a pee pad inside. Like Luna, Hercules was more interested in playing with the pee pad than using it to go potty. So then we decided to train him to go outside. We live in an apartment, on the 3rd floor. After a week of running up and down 34 steps (I would count them, it was so much) we came up w/ the idea of building a "balcony park" for him to use. We just built a little box and put it on the balcony for him to do his business in. Our plan is to find some sod to put in it, to make it like grass, so he would be used to going outside and on grass. But we've had difficulty finding sod, so we put a pee pad on it and them some leaves on top. This keeps the pee pad in place (it actually fits perfectly inside the box) and he's still learning to go outside. Hercules is 3 months today and we've been doing this for almost 2 weeks and he seems to be catching on. He's actually gone to the door a few times and when we take him outside he goes. He still has some accidents, but that's completely understandable. A suggestion for you is to build a little box to put the pee pad in (like fasteddie suggested). |

| Oh great idea! Will try the box idea... for now I just been putting her on the pee pee pad and saying "get busy!" then when she has her accidents I said no... and take her to her pee pee pad and say get busy here... hopefully this method will work after trying and trying some more hehehe... hopefully, like I said she won't bite it if she smells that it's spoiled. Only time will tell... has anyone used that method? just saying no go here... and then praising them if they do go there? when I first tried the pee pee pad idea she would always miss the pad by a little bit so I would never praise her ... hmm... should I have praised her if she went near it?

| FunkieMunkie ... persistence pays off! If we actually see Toto accidentally miss the pad, we praise her and give a treat anyway. Sometimes she walks over, sniffs and with her little head and chest over the pad, she just pees away ... off the pad! She always looks so proud of herself ... she seldom misses anymore!

| when we got Buckeye the lady told us he was housebroken. He was not any where close to it. One thing I did to help with the poo poo part was I took notice the time of day he made his accidents and the next day i would take him for a walk the same time. He soon got the hang of it. It was just catching him the right time to do his business. I did an awful lot of taking him out side to break the pee in the house part, like every 15 minutes and told him to potty. He now will go on command. He comes to get me now even if i am up stairs and he is down stairs with Bob. Ahia is starting to do the same thing. Only difference is she takes so much longer searching for her spot to go. Buckeye has one spot he likes to poop and will not go in our yard. Amazingly he wants to go down the street where there is a bridge and no ones yard. Treats have helped Ahia.

| I, too, was having difficulty teaching my yorkie to go on the paper. Since she hasn't had all of her shots and we live in an apartment complex with lots of dogs, we were unable to take her outside. Somehow (when I wasn't paying attention) she learned her bathroom command "go potty". I would always say it when she was going to the bathroom on the paper and then gave her a treat. It was working somewhat. She always seemed to get on the edge of the paper and it was making a mess. Not to mention it was getting messy cleaning up the newspaper. When I was at the vet last I saw another lady with a yorkie. She recommended that I get the litter box. Since I knew she would eat the litter pellets that you can buy, I just lined the box with newspaper. So far it has worked great. She now can associate a place (other than the carpet) to go to the bathroom. She almost always pees in it by herself. We have some days where she poops in it everytime and some days where she only poops in the carpet. But I can deal with the poop..its easier to clean up. As far as teaching her commands, I started with sit and anytime I saw her sitting I would tell her what it is. I would wait a long time in between teaching different commands. I tried "down" right after sit and now she gets them confused. It is much easier to teach something new than to try to undo something wrong! Good luck! |

| I want to scream... lol she's gone pee pee inside her play pen today too many times! I want to paper train her so badly but she doesn't get it. I know I can't get frustrated yet but I already am. LOL I really can't take walking her, I forget. Has anyone only paper trained? If so how did you start? It's really what I have to do since we have memory problems ... and forget to go every hour. I am going to start a Luna pee pee/poo poo log to record her times. Since we leave food out for her because she is a puppy I cannot be consistent in taking her potty after eating so the pee/poo log should work wonders. I really hope I will be back here soon with good news that Luna is fully housebroken, lol... till then I'll still be frustrated.

| We are in a campground in Orlando right now and did not want Oscar going where the general population goes (his coccidia and only one shot). So we got him a little wire mesh play yard. I put him in there and he goes. I was letting him loose on our site, but he wanted to romp and chase everybody. Now he knows when he is placed in the pen, that is what he is supposed to do..but if I forget, he does still go in the house. Maybe you could get her a "yard" and see if that helps...good luck. |

| Patience is the best policy ! Each time we had to train our girls we used the puppy pad placed at one end of their play yard pen and at the other end was their bed, food & water. It seemed to work for us. We got our girls during the cold winter months and being so small, they didn't see the outdoors until spring. By then they were all puppy pad trained and when they were brought outside they just automatically went there also. So now they are very adaptable to the house/RV puppy pads and outside. We buy the OUT Puppy Pads from Walmart with 32 in a pkge, seems to be the best bargain around here and when we travel we can always find a Walmart. With that canine flu going around I wouldn't bring your baby where other dogs have been,or let them run loose, even if they are up to date on shots. Its just not worth the risk. These little ones are so small we'd be running them outside every hour. We even gave them a name " Princess Pees-a-lot ", but they slow down and fall into a pattern after a while, just be patient, and it will pay off. Good luck! |

| Yorkie24U ... that's the way Toto's area is set up ... we also put a tarp or a heavy duty shower curtain down and set the X-pen on it. That way she isn't on the carpet/ground and we don't worry about dirtying the carpet or germs in the ground! Since we move around so much, Toto associates with "her things" rather than her surroundings and adapts quickly. Also, we have found that if we find little doodles on the carpet, it's a result of poop temporarily hanging on her fur rather than her pooping on the carpet! We were happy to learn that because for awhile we thought she was going on the carpet! When Dr. Lucy groomed her she showed us how to "band" her little tail and each side of her skirt in the back to avoid this problem. It's sooo cute ... from the rear she looks like she has three little pony tails!! FunkyMunkie ... are you able to spend a lot of time with Luna or are you gone during the day? Perhaps we had such success in training Toto is that I am with her 24/7. I am so fortunate that I can do this because otherwise I would probably be beating my head against the wall!! Good luck and I hope this is helpful.

| I found that it helped to give a treat right after going outside to pee. They see it as a reward when they pee outside and they know that when they do it they will get a treat! Good Luck!! |
