| My yorkie is now 7yrs old and has been in the pool many times from puppy right up to this year. He is not in it excessively but when he is hot and the kids are out there playing he has been known to jump in.. then swim like hell to get to the stairs almost like he is saying to himself. "what the heck was I thinking'. He does tend to rub the deck to dry off so I got him a chair cushion and put it on the ground and he rubs on that and lays under the canopy watchin the kids. I can't say he enjoys the water, he just knows it cools him off. He does try to drink the water and we discourage that and have a bowl with fresh water in it for him. My brother has an airedale and he jumps in and thinks he is human which is where I think my Trinket picked the jumpin in part.. its too funny. By my experience I would say go ahead.. let him swim just not drink. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | We have a pool and it should be just fine for your baby. My Wylie knew how to swim automatically, which has always been my experience. He needs coaxing to get in the pool - he's not a huge fan.

| We have a pool also but the guys don't like it....they love to hang around it & peer in it over the edge but not go in....a couple of years ago one of them fell accidentally in the pool a couple of times during the summer while I was out there cleaning it, I was always a few feet away...I went running over to him to get him out & I could clearly see the fear in his eyes, he was dog paddling but I could tell if I had not been out there he would have keep treading in that one spot & would have just tired & sank...I saw a show on this ,it said if they don't know HOW to get out by going to the steps they will drown...he now knows the dangers off the edge & he's NEVER out there alone.....it's not enough to know to dog paddle it's the locating & being able to swim to the steps that's critical...

| Mine go swimming in our pool but dont really like it. They dog paddle frantically through the pool. The pool is new so hopefully they will get used to it in time. They always have lifejackets on.

| Lucy has loved the pool from the day we brought her home (at 12 weeks). I have a hard time keeping her out of it.

| Swimming Max loves to swim for short periods of time. He lays on my beach chair with me and when he gets hot, he goes to the ladder and wants in. I am always with him and he actually only dog paddles for a little bit then wants on the air mattress. He seems to enjoy it. I worried about the chorine also, but his coat is okay - I try not to let him drink the water though, he has a dog bowl of fresh water by my chair. Hope this helps! |

| Mine don't particularly like to swim, but Sunnie and Sunshine both like to ride on the float with me. We built a fence around our pool because everyone one of them have at one time or another fallen in. Thank goodness we were right there at the time. SO many yorkie drown every year from falling in because even though they can swim, they cannot climb out of the pool on thier own. If mine tried to stand on the step, they would still be under water. |
