| Having ATrouble with "DOWN" command Chase started school last Wednesday and did pretty well. I was so proud of him and he was the smallest in the class of course. He got the sit command great, but the down command is a problem he's always chasing the treat with his buttom in the air instead of putting his little body on the floor completely. Any tips before we have to go back to class on Wednesday, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks! |

| Maybe just go ahead and push his bottom the rest of the way down and say "down". Do not give treat until his bottom is on the floor. Hope this helps! |

| I had a bit of trouble teaching Luigi the down command as well. I made a post just a couple weeks ago asking how I can get him to stop lunging at my hand for the treat, and just stay down A few days after I made that post, he finally got the command! What I did at first was hold the treat and place it down on the floor so that he would actually get down on the floor. Then eventually, I would keep the treat in my left hand, and kinda gesture with my right hand (lowering my right hand a little) and this seemed to work. EVerytime he'd try to lunge at my hand, I'd just say "NO!" and hold him back and wait until he was patiently lying down. That's what worked for me. Maybe someone else will have more advice for you But I am sure Chase will get it soon...I thought Luigi would never get it (even though I had only taught him for 2-3 days haha..but he did!) Just keep at it! Good luck!

| Just keep the treat hidden under your hand on the floor in freont of him, Don't give him any command. When he finally give up and lies down, then say "down" and give the treat. when you see him lying down, anywhere, say down and give a treat. He'll soon get the idea. |

| That works with some, but for Ollie, the second I touched her butt she was up and the game was over. It took a lot of time and patience with her. |

| I would get my dog to sit first, and then take the treat from his nose down the ground and say down. I would not give it to him, until he was all the way down. |

| Harley also had a hard time with the down commend. My hubby got involved and when he said "down" in his low and forcefull voice, Harley understood the command right away. He does not say it mean by any means, but just comming for the head of the pack, Harley thought he better listen and obey!!

| you might try it with him on an elevated surface (keep him on a lead and have someone help so he doesn't jump).Put him into sit, and make an L shape motion from his nose, past the edge of the elevated surface, and then out towards you. This will bring his body down and then out. The elevated surface makes it so that you can lower the treat far enough that he HAS to put his whole body down. If you are clicker training, click as soon as he is laying, before he sticks his little tush up, then he'll catch onto what you want! Training takes SO much patience! -O

Donating YT 7000 Club Member | aww. yeah one thing Tucker never had a problem with is down. He would do this belly flop thing where he'd sit on his back legs and slap himself to the floor. Are you allowed to use treats? (I ask because once I went to a class where you couldn't use treats). If so, put the treat on the floor *while they are sitting* and move it away from them slowly. While you're doing that, put your finger just below their neck a put a little pressure on it. While doing that just keep saying "down" and when they do it, throw a mini party! and if you can't use treats, just skip the treat part and hopefully the rest will work for you! Good luck!
