| Amish Families raising dogs in PA.?! I took Diesel out to petsmart to look around. While I was there we saw a Maltese pup! He was just too cute for words! Diesel really embarrassed me tho. I put him on the floor and let the two of them nose around. He had his ears pinned back and his little tail was just wagging! His back was perfectly straight, his head was held high and he was just prancing around! It really was the adorable. Then Diesel gets so excited that he PEES in the floor a little. He has NEVER done this before!!! LOL It was still really cute tho! Anyway... I asked her if she got him locally. She says no, I bought him from an Amish family in PA. No offense to anyone here that may have gone this route but.... I just can't imagine it isn't a known fact that the Amish run Puppymills! He looked healthy and I really hope that it stays that way. Knowing what I know now .. there is no way I could buy from an Amish family.

| I don't think it's fair (or logical) to assume that ALL Amish breed puppies in horrible conditions.

| I would assume he was from a puppy mill too being from an Amish family. Maybe they all don't run puppymills but it's pretty commonly known that they do. A lady on another forum I get on bought a bichon/maltese mix last year from an amish family. She was told this was just an accidental litter and that they usually only bred maltese and bichons (but not together). When she got there the pups were in a basket in the house and they picked one out. As they were leaving they noticed all the cages outside in a shed... Turned out it was a puppymill. She got the puppy anyway...ended up having a ton of medical problems

| I wouldnt assume that ALL Amish families run puppymills either but if I saw a puppy in a pet store that came from an Amish family you can bet your boots it came from a puppymill because no reputable breeder would sell their dogs to a pet store. I have seen far too many videos of Amish puppymills and the auctions they have where they sell the dogs like livestock to make me stay away not only from Amish puppymills but from any of them. |

| I heard that too but obviously we can't say that ALL amish people run puppymills. My brother got his boxer from amish people (before I had heard all of the rumors) and he never said anything about an over abundance of dogs, breeds of dogs, cages, etc. There were only boxers on site. I wasn't there, however, so I can't judge if his boxer was from a puppy mill. He didn't seem like he was from a mill, though--he was/is a very social dog, did not spend his days in a cage, and is and always has been very healthy.

| WOW - this is the first time I've ever heard that Amish people run puppy mills. Is this really true?

| Your right.. I can't assume that ALL Amish families have puppymills. Let me just say that A LOT of them do. Here is a link you can go to that will show how many dogs some families have . When you get to it type in Lancaster as the county. It will bring up a lot of info. http://services.agriculture.state.pa...spections.aspx

| Here is another link that gives a little more info on people (Both Amish and Non-Amish) living in Lancaster that have puppymills. It seems to be a really HUGE problem there.

| Lancaster County is the puppymill capital of the East. Unfortunately the Amish look at dogs the same as they do cattle, so they don't see any harm in puppy mills. I live in South Jersey which is right outside of Philadelphia and there have been many many exposes on the puppymills in Lancaster county PA. Governor Rendell has tried to pass legislation to regulate these places but they do exist. Check the pet for sale section any day in the Philadelphia Inquire or the Philadelphia Daily News and you will see 717 (area code for Lancaster County) dogs for sale.

| I didn't know about there being a strong chance a puppy would be from a puppymill if we bought from that area. It's one of the things I learned after finding YT. |
