Gagging, Coughing, Hacking Treatments? Well, Yoda's past three years of age now, yet at times, randomly it seems, he has episodes where he gags, like he has a hairball stuck in his throat, but he can't get it out. Usually it goes away on its own, but when we hear it, of course it worries us. We've searched all the threads here for gagging and reverse sneezing, and we don't believe Yoda has reverse sneeze nor kennel cough (he hasn't been exposed to other dogs for a while) nor a collapsed trachea. It definitely does not sound like coughing, and it doesn't seem like reverse sneezing either (we've seen Yoda reverse sneeze on other occassions). Another possibility could be tonsillitis, but since Yoda only started this current gagging/coughing episode this morning, we haven't seen any mucus in his poop and we're not sure about his appetite yet today (just before his first meal of the day right now). We did let him out to get some fresh air, massaged his throat, but haven't tried the holding his nostrils yet. He's been sort of hacking for a couple of hours now, at least when he's awake (he's been trying to sleep it off it seems). He did throw up a little bit of yellow bile this morning too. Is there any other things we can try to do besides what's listed below (found in other posts and sites)? We tend to think he'll be okay and it will pass as it has in the past, but it's always scary to see him hacking away and being uncomfortable and it's always best to be overprotective when it comes to Yoda for us. We will probably take him in to the vet's in a day or two if this keeps up, perhaps for some antibiotics? Quote:

I'm sorry Yoda is coughing - It really sounds like just a regular cough that may go away on it's own...Chanel did this for about 3 days a few months ago ....but I would for sure go to the vet if it continues - Oh...try to RECORD the cough if you can to take it with you - you know he won't do it at the vets...even if you don't have a recorder - most of our camera's have video - with sound ... I can relate to it because Cheri just started doing the same thing yesterday - I was listening SO HARD thinking of her trachea....I wonder if the weather changes or a hair could cause a problem like this ? last night - I gave her a tiny bite of chicken and she threw it up from coughing - It's so scary to hear them and all sorts of things go thru our minds....I'll be reading this thread also - She's only coughed maybe 4 times today and IS outside alot - but I'm wondering why she's doing this also... Do you think her and Yoda are sneaking off in a private chat somewhere ? |
Coughing Could be allergy related, next time you go to vet, mention it. Chloe was biting at her feet and I thought it was anything but allergy and come to fine out, that is what it was, reaction to grass. |
Thanks for the tips! An update, Yoda seems fine, he still hacking a little bit, but lot less than this morning. He seemed to have gotten a lot better after he barked for a few minutes (someone came to our house). He has eaten his normal early brunch meal and he does want to play, so everything seems pretty good. We'll see how it continues... |
Mine do this when the pollen count is high here! We are up in the mountains and I have a ton of windows and leave them open quite frequently... I brought Bunny home in April when we were in peak allergy season and noticed that both she and Tino would hack and cough as well..... I asked my vet about it and he said that it was really common for them to react like that... he said that she didnt have "Allergies" like we would have that needed medication, but that the pollen had just irritated her throat... He was right... as soon as were out of season, the coughing and hacking ceased. So maybe this is what Yoda is experiencing since its sporadic??? |
O.k...I know this may sound nuts but how long is the hair around Yoda's mouth? I ask this because Boog did the same thing once so we checked in his mouth but didn't see anything. He kept coughing and hacking so we checked again, with a flashlight, and found that a thin strip of hair from around his muzzle had gotten stuck between his upper lip and gums and went down the side of his throat...it was real hard to see and of course, he couldn't cough it up. We almost made a trip to the vet and after we found the problem we were glad we didn't! Needless to say, we kept his hair shorter after that. Life with Boog...it was always interesting! LOL! |
I just read this post and a portion of the post by Jabrile raises a red flag for me. Compressing the chest of any living thing might not be safe unless you have specific training. I have no idea what compressing the chest is supposed to do but it can disrupt heart rhythm and respirations if done too vigorously.. Somebody straighten me out if I am wrong.. |
guish this thread hit home for me. last night Buckeye woke me up doing the same thing. it was not his usual reverse sneeze. it was different. i also thought he had hair stuck in his throat. I had the fan on us all night and thought that might have been the problem too. he hasn't had one of those fits again but i sure didn't sleep well for listening for him to do it again. i was ready to swoop him up and head for a vet. |
Poor Yoda Wish I could help. Sorry to hear Yoda is not feeling well. |
Good suggestions... He seems better this morning at least. Hopefully it will pass. A high pollen count or allergies may be the culprit... |
