| Neutering and Microchip- what to expect Hi everyone! I have an appointment this thursday for my little bear to be neutered and microchipped. When I had my cats fixed, they stayed at the vet overnight, but m new vet said that Paddington can come home that afternoon.I'm not sure what to expect.Do I need to get him anything special to wear so that he doesn't lick the incision? I know he can't eat anything after 8:00 (which will be hard, since we have obedience training class until 8:30- no treats for him the last half hour!!!) but is there anything else I should do to prepare him? Will he be able to sit in his car seat on the way home? And for the microchipping, what should I plan on taking? What information do they store on there??? I'm so nervous about all of this.... Thanks! -O

| I would take him home in a hard pet carrier. I know Lacy was awake but still very groggy when I picked her up from being spayed. I left her in her crate overnight until the next morning when she was fully awake. I did take her out for a couple potty brakes. The first time she was still pretty groggy and threw up just a little bile (the anaesthesia can make them feel a little sick). the second time she was okay but I wanted her to sleep it off good and rest well. No matter how awake he seems when you pick him up, I just think it would be safer and easier on him to be in a secure pet carrier. When Lacy was spayed, I put a newborn onesie on her that I got at Target. It was a little big but it worked. I've recommended it to other that had their little dogs spayed and all said it worked well. I'm not so sure if it would work for a male though since the onsie might rub the incision there... If he messes with them, you may have to get an e-collar (the cone thing).

| I haven't dealt with neutering yet... But microchipping is no big deal. You don't have to bring any information, the vet will just put in the chip, and you'll register it with the company.

| If it really stresses him out that much, then don't do it. If he's awake enough and your vet thinks it is okay for him to be in his carseat do that. Or have someone ride in your car with you and hold him. Just make sure he's secure because he's probably going to still be pretty out of it. He's probably going to be kindof nausious (spelling?) as well from the anaesthesia so he may get sick in the car so just be prepared in case he does.

| My two really didn't have much problem with the neutering. Dropped them off at 7:30 AM and picked them up around noon. The were awake but still a bit groggy. They just sort of dozed the rest of the day. I did give them 1 dose of the pain meds mid afternoon but they didn't seem to need it after that. They had e collars that I kept on them for the rest of the day but took them off at night. Actually Archie had to wear the collar the week before after his eye injury and he had already figured how to get it off himself. I tried the onesie thing but they could wiggle out of them. So I just corrected the first few times I caught them licking and they pretty much stopped trying after the next day. They didn't have sutures - just surgical glue. I've read that some vets give something you can put on the incision to deter licking, but I didn't ask about it at the time. You might want to check with your vet about that. My vet advised limiting food and water the rest of that day, but neither of mine had any stomach issues and were back to their usual appetite by that evening. Some dogs do have some stomach problems after anesthesia, so you may want to check with your vet for advise if your pup is sensitive. Really, he should be just fine. Another of those things that in some ways is almost as hard on us. |

| Thanks for the advice everyone! I'm so nervous! I won't even be able to drop him off because I have to go to work early (so that I can get off early and be the one to pick him up!)My mom is going to take him for me. The poor guy, doesn't know what's coming... I kind of feel bad for him When will I be able to bathe him again??? I gave him a bath tonight, because he was getting stinky, and I wasn't sure when I could again. He started doing this thing where he pees and then rolls in it when he's excited, so I don't know if I'll need to bathe him again this week. -O

| My vet has always told me to wait until stitches are removed or dissolved (depending on type) to bathe them - normally 10-14 days. You want to make sure the incision has time to heal before you bathe them. I bathe Lacy every week so it was so hard waiting two weeks to bathe her! She was stinky!! I hope it goes well - I'm sure it will!

| My Boys were done a month ago and no trouble from them after . They just slept more that first day then normal and never licked their incisions . They also figured out what their activity limits would be quickly - if it hurt they quit doing what they we doing ! The 2 week bathing was a pain as we had taken them camping one weekend but they sure did smell good after ! Good luck ! |

| well, I bought some in-between bath wipes from target that smell just like his shampoo (same company) so I guess if I need to, I'll just wipe him down real quick with those. I'm glad I thought to give him a bath last night! I picked him up about eight hours ago, and it's hard to tell he had anything happen to him today the nurse said she's never seen a dog come out of anasthesia so hyper. I'm glad though; I'd be sad if he were all mopey and groggy. -O
