Wow, I think I have read thousands of posts on here and I have never seen anyone say that about dogs that arent purebred. Could you point out all of the posts you are refering to so I can see what you are talking about? I am assuming there are several since you say you are so tired of seeing people say it.

I have nothing against mixed breeds, and I don't like the word "mutt". I have seen some beautiful mixes. My little Lily is 3/4 yorkie and 1/4 maltese. Personally, I love the yorkie/maltese mix.

The only thing I don't like is when people breed so-called "designer dogs" and sell them for outrageous amounts of money. To me, that's not much different than intentionally breeding for tiny dogs and then advertising them as "teacups" and putting high price tags on them.

I'm sorry you were offended though. I'm sure it wasn't intentional.

That right!! I have a yorkie Pom mix (porker) and I feel bad for Bunny BC every time we go out, no one want to pet her BC she is 6lb and Bella is 2.9 lbs... Its to a pont now I dont let ANY ONE pet my girls.

Bella dose not like odd people touching her and Bunny LOVES every one But every one want to pet bella bc she is smaller and full breed.

UGH if you are going to pet one then pet the other too!!

I've ALWAYS wanted a ''mixed breed'' pooch (Malti-poo, a la Jess Simpson)..until I got Daisy (she was a bday gift from hubby last year).I don't think I could love another dog more than her. My hubby pointed out that she is a pure bred..who cares!?

I think this should apply to humans too! I've been called a ''mutt'' all my life and it aint cool any more! (I'm eurasian btw)

Hmmm, you took the words right out of my mouth. Sounds like we have a big problem- I don't know how I missed it!

I had a mixed breed who passed away two years ago and he was very loved and is missed very much. I hate for anyone to get their feelings hurt but I do know we are all dog lovers here so I think something must have been misinterpreted.

Can't political correctness get quite confusing?
Actually, I think you are close to right. By definition:

mutt
1.a dog, esp. a mongrel. 2.a stupid or foolish person; simpleton.

mon·grel
1.a dog of mixed or indeterminate breed. 2.any animal or plant resulting from the crossing of different breeds or varieties. 3.any cross between different things, esp. if inharmonious or indiscriminate.

Really, according to that, any dog is a mutt, but a mixed breed is a mongrel. But the word mutt derives from "muttonhead" for stupid or foolish? implying that a mutt would be of lesser quality. And I don't think that being a purebred would rescue all dogs from that category. (Because so many BYB breed for $$$$ not for breed.)

But I read alot here, lurking in the background, and the only time I have "heard" put downs for mixed breeds is the designer breeding and when people are defending their babies/worried about lineage.

I love all dogs, purebred or mixed. We have some very cute mixes that are groomed where I work! However, I strongly disagree with the breeding of mixed breeds. I absolutely HATE this whole "designer dog" fad going on. Pretty much refuse to say Labradoodle, Morkie, etc. I call them what they are - a lab/poodle mix or a yorkie/maltese mix. There is absolutely no purpose to breeding these mixes as there is no standard and no "bettering of the breed." These dogs are only bred to hopefully make "cute puppies" and a nice profit. I also think it's dumb to pay $1000 for a mixed breed dog... I in no way hate or dislike mixes..I dislike the greedy people breeding them and the people that buy them because they are the "new hot thing" and then get rid of them a few months later because they are getting too big, are hard to train, not as cute anymore, actually do shed (for the poo mixes), etc. I was just telling my boss about the cutest little mix I saw on Petfinder named Chopstix..the cutest Chihuahua/yorkie mix. She has such a sad, cruel story and I was saying that if I was going to adopt a dog, I would definitely try to adopt her. I just wish people would adopt these mixes from their shelter or a rescue group instead of paying a lot of money from a backyard breeder/puppymill.

I really should ignore this post...and move on...but it is getting harder and harder for me to ignore stuff.

I have mixed puppies. 3/4 yorkie 1/4 maltese. Granted it wasn't intentional, but just becuase i have a mixed litter doesn't make me an unreputable breeder as is popular opinion.

I put a lot of time into my puppies. I don't feel like I ask an outrageous price for my puppies...maybe others think so, and that is ok. But just because my puppies are mixed doesn't mean I don't take the time to screen potential homes or get to know potential new owners. I have even come down in price to place my babies with the RIGHT parents.

It is NOT about getting top dollar for me...It is about matching the right furbaby to the right mom/dad...No matter if they are mixed or purebred.

Now if I have not one person's respect here because I have mixed pups, that is fine too. It doesn't change the fact that I love my babies very much nor does it change the fact that I want what is the very best for them.

And they are not designer dogs..they are loveable furbabies and deserve a good loving home just as much as the next purebred!

I just wanted you to know that I was talking about people INTENTIONALLY breeding these mixes...not a one-time accident. I really wish accidents like this didn't have a chance to happen, but no one is perfect, including myself, and mistakes do happen sometimes. I was just really refering to breeders that do this on purpose and continue doing so. I just don't see the point in intentionally creating mixed breed puppies...just serves no purpose. Of course, those puppies deserve to live the best life possible no matter if they are purebred or not. I'm sure they are adorable (yorkies and maltese are so similar and beautiful that all of those mixes turn out pretty).

This is what I meant to post - sorry

I think this is an overgeneralization (IMO). I own a maltese/yorkie mix, and I didn’t buy him to fulfill any latent desires for the newest fad. I found Teddy from a breeder who sold yorkies and maltese while I was researching which breed to buy. Teddy was as well-taken care of as her pure bred dogs, and had extensive health records, could not go home till he was 12 weeks and is very well-socialized. I am a pet owner who believes a pet is a pet for life (understanding there are circumstances beyond our control that make it impossible for us to keep that promise). My pets are spayed/neutered and are healthy and happy, and I believe this is true for many who spend “too much” on a mixes; even though the cat I adopted from a shelter cost me double what I spent on my dog after costly treatment to clear up a horrible upper repertory infection. I am not a person who succumbs to the latest fads, and my morkie is not an old pair of jeans I would toss to the side when a new style comes out. Even if he turned out to be the ugliest dog in the world I would still love him (but he is adorable).

Thats what I was wondering. You don't have to target any member, just post the threads in question on here so we can be knowledgeable about this issue.

Willow,
The only way I would loose respect for you is if you tried to pass them off as full-blooded AKC registered yorkies. And I know you wouldn't do that! They sound kinda cute to me! Do you have pictures?

Do a search for "Mutt" and you will see some of the posts that I think may have upset the OP.
