| At What Age Did Your Yorkie Start Walking Outside? I'm just wondering at what age you guys decided to take your Yorkie for a walk? Missy is 10 months now, close to 11 months. We've taken her out, but we usually hold onto her in our arms. We are planning to start walking her outside soon though. We are slowly teaching her to get use to the outside world though. Sometimes we let her go on the ground, sniff around. She'll go down our front stairs of our house, and right into the garage like no tomorrow! next step.... parks! | We didn't start taking Jake outside until this spring because I didn't want to take him out in the winter. I got him in Sept. so he was too young and too little to take him out when the weather was cold. We actually started letting him get used to the leash by putting it on him and walking him around the house first. Then, we took him to pet stores after he had all his shots. When the weather started getting warmer, we started taking him outside in the backyard and the woods behind our house. He was scared at first, so I would take him out for very short periods of time each day, and I would increase the time a little bit so he could get used to it. Before long, he was having a great time out there. He loves going for walks, and he loves going outside to play! We kinda live in the country, although our street is a main street and busy. We don't have sidewalks, so we just walk him in the yard, since there's plenty of room to take a nice, long walk. He loves it! I guess he was about about 9-10 months old when we first started really walking him outside. Edited to add: We also take him to our daughter's house, and he plays with her dogs so he gets socialization with other dogs. We have taken him to a nearby park also. I think socialization with other dogs is important, as it gets him used to other dogs and he's not scared. Last edited by SJK1113; 07-07-2007 at 07:31 PM. |

| I let mine out of the house after they had all of their shots. Close to 3 months I'd guess.

| I agree with Kona and Tx2stepn I DO NOT let mine out until ALL shots are given (around 3.5-4months), rabies included. You just don't know what they can catch.. I would say you are okay to let your baby out since she is almost 11 months (I assume she has all her shots) I would say go for it they love going for walks..

| Lacy started going outside to potty as soon as I got her at 11 weeks. Those of you that wait until all the shots are done, what do you do to potty train them? I don't like the idea of paper/pad training and wanted her to learn to go outside.

| I use a puppy pen w/ hygenic floors. I place it outside w/o the pan in the bottom but I have it a level that the dog can't touch the ground. I put the puppy in the pen and tell him to go potty. If the dog is one that I show he will continue using the puppy pen until I'm not showing him anymore, otherwise after the shots are finished I start taking the pup outside and put him on the ground instead of in the pen. |

Donating YT 11K Club Member | I took them out as soon as they got their 3rd set of shots. Here in NY the streets are very dirty and there are rats so they could get sick, so i did it when the vet said it was okay. I would take them out in a carrier though as soon as i got them, which was like 10-12 weeks old

| I train them on the pee pad until they are old enough to go outside, then I gradually start moving the pee pad towards the door, then eventually put the pee pad outside the door (and leave the wood door open and the screen door shut) where they can see it then they scratch to get to it (or ring the bell), then I open the door and soon enough they are going outside (it is not as easy as it sounds though, but it HAS worked on my two girls)..

| Wobie came outside with me as soon as I got him, because I wanted to make sure he was very well socialized, but I didn't let very many people touch him, and he definitely didn't touch the ground. After his third set of shots, when it was safe he began walking on the ground. We go for two 1 mile walks a day, and one 3 mile walk a day. He loves it, and it helps so much with behavior issues.
