| HELP!! new puppy owner I am getting my first puppy ever on Sunday and i am so nervous. I do not know what to buy, or where to begin. I was told not to buy the food until I find out what food the place I purchase my puppy from is feeding him. If the puppy comes with his first shots is that a good thing or is that not enough? I am so confused.. any help is appreciated |

| Congradulations! The pup will need a series of shots so you will need to find a vet, you are really not supposed to let pup have much contact with or where other dogs are, until you get the rest of the shots. You need to decide how you are going to house train pup pad or outside.Pads can be bought at walmart or pet stores. You should have a place prepared for the pup to be confined when you cannot watch her or him. Crate or a bathroom, not on carpet. Not allowing pup to use the potty anywhere it is not supposed too is a good start to training. Usually a pup will be frightened and not want to eat anything at first.I would have little chicken or cottage cheese available. Find out what food it has been on and feed same at first. YOu can change to what food you prefer but mix with original for three days. Yorkies can have trouble with their blood sugar dropping after excitement or play. There are many things you can use to treat this. I give mine miniture marshmellows for a treat. You are getting a pup just like a newborn baby. You will get up during the night a couple of times and they will want to play. If you have anymore ? this is a great forum? |

| Also you can determine approx. how often a pup will use the bathroom by how old they are. Of course this is guess work, but it has been somewhat true by mine. If they are two mths old then you add an hour. So they should need to go every three hrs. Alot of factors change this eating, play. It will take time to get to some schedule.Of course at first it is just often. |

| Must haves for the new puppy! Needed: a lap (yours) a playmate (that's you) many toys (that's your shoes, furniture legs, etc.) potty pads (your throw rugs or expensive oriental carpet will work just fine) his/her own bed (oh yea, that's right, you are probably already sleeping in his or her bed--yours) Did I forget anything???? Lots of luck with your new puppy--I have a 1 year old and a 13 week old yorkie.

| No schedule for 1st week or so just get used to each other. YOu will probably start noticing patterns such as waking up at same time. Of course you may want to start feeding the majority of food at certain times of the day, then watch and see how soon it has to use the bathroom after eating. |

| Welcome to Yorkie Talk! Iloveemmy, that was so funny but true. I am thinking you will need a blanket, food, bed, something to keep blood sugar up (nutrical), toys/chewies, crate, baby gate or playpen, leash, harness and treats. I don't know why I am thinking to say this but better safe than sorry: Please make sure that puppy has NO access to ANY cords. Ellie wasn't a chewer as a puppy but she loved cords. Congratulations.

| Please buy a waterproof pad for your bed. They have alot of accidents.Always use name brand paper towels. And buy a ex-pen.Go to petsmart, petco,or ebay. Inside the ex-pen puppy pads, bed, toys and bowls.Remember to put the puppy pads on the other side of expen. They dont go potty where they sleep.
