Icon2 Help With New Yorkie Puppy!

We recently bought home a new yorkie puppy...a little boy

He instantly attached to me. He is my little shadow. Wherever I am, he is. He even started climbing the stairs to get to me (however, he won't go DOWN them). The problem is...there are other people in my family that he is terrified of. Whenever any of my brothers pick him up, he is shaking uncontrollably. Whenever my mom is holding him he is shaking. He yelps and yelps until he sees me. My brother is now getting really upset at the fact that the dog seems to want nothing to do with anyone but me. I am now trying to keep my distance from him so he can try and get attached to others in the family. But it doesn't work because he will keep crying until he sees my face.

I want him to get attached to everyone else in my family. I admit, it's really nice having him be my shadow...look down wherever I go and there he is. But my brothers want to be able to play with him and be with him. He will only play with me. If one of my brothers gets out a squeaky toy for him he will ignore them.

How on earth do I go about trying to get him to get attached to everyone else, if when he is around everyone else and not me he gets so worked up that I have to come back to him to calm him down? We have another yorkie and he never did this. He was shy for a couple days after arriving (we got him at three months old) but warmed up to everyone. This dog just immediately hooked on to me and acts like he wants nothing to do with everyone else

What can I do to get him used to everyone else? Should I try and stay away from him? I've been doing that but he gets so worked up that I need to get back and calm him down. I don't know what to do! I am happy to have him...he's adorable and just the sweetest thing...but I feel bad that my brothers and the rest of my family are upset that he won't even attempt to do anything with them when they try!

Also...how on earth am I supposed to get our other Yorkie to at least deal with the new puppy? He wants NOTHING to do with him. He's snapped at him, he's snarled at him...and now whenever he sees Bubba, he'll turn the other direction. He didn't snap at him at all today. He just kind of turned the other way. I'd rather him do that than snap...but at the same time I'd like for them to get along!

Thanks!!

Hi and welcome to Yorkie talk! Congratulations on your new addition.

All of the things you mentioned take time. How long have you had this baby? How old is he? Who feeds and cares for him? Where does he sleep?

Let other people feed and care for him. Let them spend time holding him when he is tired and relaxed and you are not around. Most yorkies want company and they will put up "others" for attention when their "main" human isn't available.

All of these things will help the puppy get used to everyone, but sometimes a dog just decides who he belongs to and that's his preference and there's not a lot you can do about it.

As for the other yorkie, I think it will come around in time. I brought two new puppies home to a westie (4 yrs) and a standard poodle (3 yrs). At first they were curious, then annoyed and now they play with and are actually protective of the puppies. Be sure to give youe older dog lots of extra attention in this transition phase.

Good luck and welcome again!

Thumbs up answers to questions from first poster

All of the things you mentioned take time. How long have you had this baby? How old is he? Who feeds and cares for him? Where does he sleep?

We got the puppy yesterday but we had gone over a couple times to meet him. I know it's too new to worry but it's just weird how he was so scared and weary of everyone else...but just automatically came to me without shaking or anything. If he was scared of me too then I'd understand and not be so concerned...but it's the fact that within a day he attached himself to me and wants nothing to do with anyone else.

He is a little over five months old.

My mom fed him this morning and took him out, etc. I fed him a little tonight and took him out during the day. My brothers also took him out (we try and get him out at least once an hour because we are in the process of trying to train him).

Last night he slept in his crate (he LOVES that thing!) in one of my brother's rooms and was fine...no whining or anything. Tonight he is in one of my other brother's rooms...we'll see how he gets along.

I think that about covers the questions

Don't worry. He is just adjusting. He is in a strange new place and I am sure he will develop relationships with everyone in the house including your older yorkie.

Lily sould shake and shiver when something new happened, we went somewhere or met someone new for several weeks after we got her. After being in any particular situation for a while, she would warm up though. Somethings still scare her but she doesn't shake all the time like she used too. I think he will learn to trust serveral people in the house and be fine pretty quick. Keep us posted.

Congratulations on your new puppy !!

BOTH my girls did this with me when small...they tend to bond strongly with one person but will also play with other people so give your new baby time...My girls are 3 and 1 and my CONSTANT shadows - I wouldn't have it any other way - but they also will play with my hubby when they want to - as long as I'm in the room....

Your baby is young right now - just encourage your family to all play and you'll have a well adjusted puppy - Bubba will adjust too in time - pay lots of attention to him also so he doesn't feel left out ! Good luck with your yorkies !

I once read that Yorkies are either 1 person dogs or they love everyone..........Make sure that when they pick him up etc, they get down to his level so it's not so freightening for them. For a yorkie looking up they see this big thing reaching down and maybe he's a little scared.

The trainer I go to said always do thing down at their level at first so they are not scared - hope this helps

Congratualtions on the new puppy and joining YT! It's a great place to be a part of, especially when you need advice. If your new puppy starts crying if you aren't there, then when someone else in the family holds the puppy, sit right next to them. Make sure the puppy knows you are okay. If he starts shaking while in someone elses arms, go over and pet him, (while he is still in their arms) reassure him, and let him know it's okay. If you only got him a day or two ago, you haave to give him time to adjust. Make sure that your brothers and your mom spend lots of time with the puppy so that he adjusts to them. I hope you have a great time with your new puppy! Keep us all updated here on YT! Good luck!

Congratulations on your new puppy. He will come around and be more social as soon as he adjusts to his new surroundings.
