| Good idea to have a picture; I took Maxwell at 5 months when he was a ball of fluff and he came out looking like a chi with a schnauzer head. I've since trimmed him up myself and he looks cute. |

| I took my Zachary today but he was probably a little young to be going. I wanted to have his ears shaved a third of the way down as they aren't standing up yet and thought that might help. I don't want to tape them if I can help it, but will see when he is four months or so. |

| Petsmart! I took Sassy to Petsmart to be groomed for the first time last night! (I know, but read on...I had a great experience.) She's five months today; a lot of groomers require your puppy to have its rabies shot before you bring them in, so I'd definitely say after that. I personally wasn't comfortable taking her for awhile, so I had to work myself up to it. I watched for awhile outside the window and saw a woman grooming a Yorkie & thought she did a great job, so I went in and made an appointment with her personally. (See this thread for pics: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=84369) Petsmart will do a special puppy package up until they're five months old, and it was pretty inexpensive. I had her face, feet, and tail trimmed, and I also had her nails clipped. She looks great! I didn't want any length taken off of her yet, but I'm sure I will eventually. I didn't think I'd be comfortable taking her to Petsmart, but the staff were all really nice, and the girl who groomed her was super sweet to Sassy, so I'll definitely go back.

| nathan went for the first time a week ago at 7 months and I must say he came back okay..I told the groomer what i wanted and he did just that...anal glands, clean up the feet, clip nails, trim hair around ears, brush teeth and to just trim him not shave him down and he came back cute as a button!! and the greatest thing was that this was a groomer at Petsmart!!!! I had been in one day and saw a lady leaving the grooming section with her yorkie and he was cute as could be and she told me who to ask for as he was the only one she let groom her yorkie and she was so right!!! Get referrals from folks and just walk thru petsmart etc and see how they handle the animals!! good luck!!

| I got Bella at 4 months, I just took her Sunday (6 months old) I had them give her a puppy cut, really shorten everything up but leave her 'topknot' longer.

| I have to get my Daisy groomed for the first time too! She's gonna be 9 months on July 1st...hmm..I think we've waited long enough! My only concern, or shall I say issue, is that I have not had any recommendations or referrals for a good groomer in my area-which is basically the reason I've been holding off on her grooming. I've her about many many awful first cuts and how they get ''embarrassed'' and I certainly wouldnt want that. she's looking like quite the moppy mess these days...

| I have always bathed, cut, trimmed, and did the nail of all my babies. If you start when they are very young, bathing, and combing everyday, they don't mind it at all. The time we spend together is great one on one bonding. Just look at pictures and find what look you like for your yorkie.

| I take paddington to get his nails cut and bathed. I am afraid to cut his nails on my own, and they do a great job bathing him. His coat hasn't grown very much, and he is just now four months so I don't let them trim him yet. They always ask though, because he looks so scraggly, but his hair is already shorter than other yorkies' and I want his adult coat to grow in nicely. -O

| Aubrey was about 5 months old when I took him. I told her what I wanted, and when I got him back they shaved in between his eyes.. he looked awfull. I never took him back there. But now I am very picky on how I have them cut him, and I make sure they do not save the hair on his nose!! |

| It's important to go in and be able to tell them exactly what you want. Even with the same breed, there are so many different things you can do to them, and everyone likes their dog's haircut differently. Some people cut the hair between their eyes - some don't cut it and let it grow and pull it up. Some people like a visor (or bangs) and some people don't. Some people want their dogs hair pulled up in a top knot, and some people want the top of the hair cut short. You can go with all different lenghts from 1/4in long all the way to 2in with blades or guides, or you can have them trim the hair with scissors if you want it left longer than 2inches. Some people like their ears tipped, some don't like them tipped. Some people want a teddy bear face, a round face, an angled face, a heart-shaped face, a schnauzer face, a long face...so many choices. Some people practically shave their dogs, some people leave them in full coat only trimming around the paw and pads, tipping the ears, and sanitary groom. Find pictures of what you want (although remember yorkies can have different coat types so sometimes you can find a cut on one dog and it won't look exactly the same on another). And make sure you give the groomer very clear instructions - even take a written note in with you with what you do and don't want. It's hard to find a good groomer but there are some great ones out there. Call your vet and see who they recommend - call other vets in your area and see who they recommend. Find other small dog owners and ask them who they use. If you hear great things about one particular place over and over - try that one. I've never done much to Lacy's hair. Her hair grows soooooooo slow for a yorkie and I want it to get really long so bad. I used to have the hair cut between her eyes because someone told me I was supposed to but I didn't like it. I finally decided to let it grow long (like the do with show dogs)..it took forever but I can finally pull it all up with one ponytail without any pieces falling out. I think it looks so much better now. I have her groomed about every 4 weeks. I usually just get her ears tipped, paws trimmed, nails filed, and sanitary around her butt. She has had her face trimmed twice and her body trimmed once just to even it up a little but I'm just letting it grow. I think it's good to start having your dog groomed after it's had all it's vaccinations, including rabies - so anywhere between 3-4 months. The first couple times at least, I would take them in for a bath and just a trim-up (paws, ears, sanitary) without any major clipping. That gets them used to it - especially if you take them every 4-6 weeks. Then by the time you really want their hair cut, they should be used to it and it's not big ordeal for them.

| I know there is so many different ways to cut them. I learned from Aubreys first hair cut. His hair grow kinda slow, but it sorda gets this curl to it. But I found out that Minksheen helps it to stay straight. I'm going to let his hair grow out, but I wish he would let me pull his hair up . |
