Scratching I won't be on this board much for the new few months, as I am in the middle of a big move. I really miss not being here. But, I have a question. The vet says Sadie does not have fleas, so why does she scratch periodically? Not alot, but she does scratch like crazy at times. Do your Yorkies do this? Thanks. Kate |
It might be a few different things. It could be something as simple as dry skin. Or it could be that she is allergic to something which could include her food. May I ask what you are feeding her?? |
Hey, thanks for the quick reply. I do notice that her tummy is dry. What could I put on it? She is on Science Diet food that the vet sold me, plus Pedigree soft canned food. Thanks. Kate Quote:

I would reccomend bathing her with a remoisturizing shampoo (there are alot here that can recommend the brand to go with) and there is spray that you can use on dogs that will help with the dry skin. In my own opinion and I know some others here feel the same way, Science Diet isn't the best food. Sometimes vets reccomend foods because they get kickbacks on it from the companies. I have heard of some dogs having dry skin and coats because of thier food. |
I am replying again, as I don't think my first post went through. My vet put her on Science Diet so she would not get fat. I have not paid for any hard food yet, as I have free samples. Another one she is eating is Natural Balance that I got at the pet store. What type of hard food do you buy? Is it true that Walmart's hard food is just as good as what you get at the vet's? Many thanks. Kate Quote:

I'd have to agree with the shampoo post & also you can try OATMEAL based shampoo - they seem to really help with itching....and make SURE you rinse really really well...lots of people have good luck with the food supplement called The Missing Link - |
Just thinking - she hasn't been scratching her ears a lot, has she??? just a little bit worried, because Buddy started scratching his ears all the time, so we took him the vet for a check up... turn out he had an infection, so we got some drops. -Jade |

Personally I swear by Iams. I would never feed a dog anything else...and I have never had a weight problem from it. I don't have any knowledge about Walmart brand dog food. But I do buy my Iams at walmart for $7.99 a bag (I think that is very reasonable). I imagine you pay a ton more than that for what you buy at the vet. If you want to try the Walmart brand food...just compare the ingredients to a name brand that you trust and see how different they are. |
Also...Someone on here recomended using Missing Link to help with Sydney's dry skin. And so far it has worked like a charm. No more dandruff. Oh sorry, Villette already said that. |
If I was you I would look at the whole dog food journal's list of good foods....I feed Innova and I switched from Royal Canin because it was amking Maximus itch (the corn in it)..basically my breeder and vet suggested that I stay away from any dog food with by-products in it...a good brand is Innova, Wellnes, Solid Gold and Blue Buffalo from the journal list...also alot of people feed Royal Canin and I would still be feeding it but it made Maximus itch so now he is on Innova Puppy and it has gotten better...good luck |
A good way to compare foods in the store is to look at the first three ingredients... Personally, with the rottie/shepherd puppy I was fostering, I fed her Purina One for growing puppies because it has lamb as it's very first ingredient. This means more protein, calcium, and amino fatty acids. It also means less carbohydrates and THAT means less poop in the yard because the body can actually use more of the nutrients in the kibble! :) Most 'cheaper' foods start with yellow corn or something like that... which is great for flavor if it's not one of the first few ingredients, but it's more of a 'filler', not a functional nutrient. So, check the first three ingredients on a bag of food, the first one listed is what the main consistency of the kibble is made up of - this can help you decide what to feed your pup. :) |

I know it costs a couple of dollars more to buy each bag of dog food, but it really does last SO MUCH longer if it's better quality! :) |
Where do you find missing link? |
When I first got Chewy he was on royal canin and had clumps of flakes from dry skin and he was itching. I have since changed to Natural Balance and no more flakes or itching. i am convinced it was the food. As people have said here, some better known brands are just full of fillers like corn meal and that can make a dog itch like crazy. I would suggest looking into another brand like innova, natural balance, etc... and then gradually switching over a week or so. Good Luck. |
