| bad knees Kiwi will get spayed on Tuesday. She just turned a year old. We were hesitant about having her put under and have finally accepted it needs to be done. We are not breeders-thought about her having a puppy but since she is 5 lbs we feel she is too small and we do not want to risk her health. Very nervous about the surgery on Tues. While at vet for her year exam the vet mentioned she has bad knees-do we notice any limping. We have not. So vet said no worry just watch and let us know if you do. Has anyone else heard of a yorkie with bad knees? It seemed like this was not so unusual in the breed. She has stairs to get up on the bed and she uses them. Just wandering if anyone has had a problem with bad knees.

| Bad knees as in luxating patella? If so, there are several threads on here about it. Just do a search. I do know that I have seen some who supplement their babies diets with glucosamine with condrotin (okay, don't know how to spell it). I just remember being amused, because I supplement my diet with it, too! Cuz I have bad knees!

| Yes - Luxating Patella's (LP) are very common. Both mine have it. Roxy has had surgery to correct it. TJ is not that bad, but we have him checked every 3 months, if his gets bad, he will have surgery. There are 4 Grades of LP (Grade 3 and 4) are really bad and should have surgery. Keep in mind LP does not get better on its own and will only get worse over time. When the patella (knee) keeps luxating (sliding in and out of its groove) the cartiledge there wears away - that can never be replaced, so later in life this can start to hurt, cause arthritis or complete lamness Just watch for any limping, carring her leg or a weird skip like walk or run. These are all signs that the knee cap is 'out'. Do a search here on YT: Luxating Patella I and others have posted a lot of information. Best of Luck |

| My maltese had both his lp surgeries last year and my yorkie had her surgery this year. Ask your Vet about a glucosamine supplement and try as best you can to limit her jumping and running. Normal running isn't so bad it's more those crazy turns they make around the dining room table as you're trying to eat dinner and they're chasing each other! Good Luck....I'm sure she'll do fine with her spay. Let us know how she is....

| Lacy also has luxating patellas (grade 3 in right leg and 2 in the left leg). It's almost always genetic unless their was trauma to the knees so you don't want to breed a dog with luxating patellas as it will most likely be passed onto the puppies. So you are making the right decision to spay her. I hope her spay goes well
