| doggie day care A friend of mine is opening a doggie day care here in Oregon He has asked me to help. Yesterday he and I went to several throughout the area. I was amazed how many large dogs were there. One day care had 46 dogs on a regular basis and the monthly day care charge is about $500 (5 days a week). this day care was the largest total 3000 sq ft. Only one had a seperate small dog area and large dog area. Most small dogs were included in the large dog areas. Average day care was 1000 sq ft. Only one did grooming and one had a u wash area. Only one had a small outdoor area. Grooming charge was average $28 plus $15 to clip the nails. At the u wash they charge $15 and up depending on how much shampoo you would use lol All employees at one were red cross trained (what ever that means) others were young either college students or high school kids. All but one had a huge retail area selling harnesses for $50 and up and dog bed pillows up to $400 yikes! All give snacks and train your dog to sit and stay (if they didnt already know) if your baby is on a special diet you pack their daily lunch. I was wondering what you all thought about doggie day care and if you would take your babies to one of these or do any of you already do it...I have some great ideas as what to add to this day care he is setting up and I will post it for your feed back once I get it all on paper. I would love to here all your opinions whether you would take your baby to a day care and what would you look for when selecting one. thank you

I have taken Simon to daycare since he was a puppy and Hallie for the past 8 months. I LOVE it but I do a ton of research and get to know everyone that works there before I would leave my dogs. In AK there was only one and actually Simon was their first dog and here in NY I looked at a few before deciding on the one I take them to now. I take them about 2x per week. THey do grooming on site, training, massage, and the vet is right next door which makes me comfortable. They had a rigorous admission process but I appreciated that. I feel very assured leaving SImon and Hallie there to play all day. THey have separate places for the small dogs and large dogs and cats too. They have a yard outside but still put their harnesses on and walk them for safety reasons. I have had nothing but positive experiences with doggie daycare, it has done wonders for Hallie getting her socialized and Simon gets out a lot of energy playing with his friends.

I have never tried doggie daycare, but I am sure it beats being in a crate or behind a gate all alone everyday. I wish more people who aren't home during the day would consider this option for their babies.

I think Doggy Day Care would be a great idea. my little guy is at home all day when im at work.. he whins alot, and i wish i could bring him to work.. or have a friend around to play with. I havn't done any research about any of them where I live, but if i found one that was affordable, i would do it in a heart beat! maybe not one that was $400 a month though. thats a bit much.

I took Cocoa to a doggie day care / pet hotel in Atlanta once while I was on a business trip. The day care was part of a pet supply store, but the atmosphere inside the doggie day care is much more quiet and serene. (Except from the play room, of course.) The place looks very nice and clean - and is fully air-conditioned and air-filtered. The play area is large and surrounded by glass wall, so people can look at their dogs playing from outside. The staffs are very friendly and helpful. They even give us a little tour of their facility. I was at first a bit nervous for leaving my 3lbs yorkie with the place where dogs of all sizes - but the staffs assured me that they separate big and small dogs play time. In addition, one or two staff members would always be in the play room to supervise. I especially like the fact that they have a "Play All Day" option so that your dog wouldn't be left in his "room" for the whole day. Unfortunately Cocoa wasn't neutered yet, so he couldn't do that. Full-service Grooming is also availble on location. Another option that I really like but didn't have time to explore was "Day Training" (or something like that) where trainers will train your dog for a period of time while he was there. I guess I like any options that would make his time at the day care passes by quickly and enjoyably (hopefully)... Last edited by pearlelpis; 06-08-2005 at 08:24 AM.

I didn't mention anything in my post about price but it is very spendy! All of them seem to be, that is why I only take them 2x a week. The way they charge here is $15/per dog per day if they come less than 3x per week and $12/per dog per day if they come 3 or more times a week (I made a deal since I have sent in about 20 new clients since I got here). It is very expensive but worth it, I believe they benefit so much from daycare! I'm definitly an advocate and would love to own one myself someday (right next to my dog friendly bookstore)! I can dream.......

| Day care is a good idea. Sometimes you just have to be gone for one day, special occasions etc. and that would be wonderful. What kind of vaccinations do they require and if you start one, how are you going to make sure that the doggies who come in are properly vaccinated?...

My boys go to a doggie day care (www.doggiecare.com) twice a week when we are gone all day. They thing I really like about the daycare is that it is only for dogs under 15 pounds. I don't need to worry about my boys getting trampled by a big dog. The woman who does the day care picks the boys up in the morning and drops them off in the afternoon. It is expensive, that's why we only do it twice a week ($24 per day for one dog, $34 for two dogs). I think having a small-dog only day care is a great business opportunity as there aren't many out there.

I have taken Annie a few times. I would take her more. But it is a bit expensive to me. $25 per day. They seperate the big dogs from the small ones. They also have individual stalls that they seperate all the dogs to twice a day for nap time so that they can clean up the play area. http://www.graceland-ddc.com/

We don't take Yoda to a day care now, but we would definitely ask if there is a section only for smaller dogs. I'm sure lots of smaller dog owners wouldn't want their dogs playing around with big Great Danes all day. Right after that, I'd ask about safety and that to make sure they don't slip out accidentally (double doors or double fences, etc). And if there's any fun activities or field trips they get to go on... Not sure if places do that, but I think some MAY have field trips? I forget... There's definitely a market for doggy day cares around Seattle, I think I know of at least two within a few miles of my house!
