| Help!!! Hi, I am very new....my 12 year old yorkie has had sign of collapase trachea... Well, after coming back from an overnight trip....I left her with a good friend....when i picked her up i noticed her cough was so persistent and very very unusual then normal....you can say, very loud goose like sound...lots of snorting...etc etc...rather then just a mere couple of secs...its ongoing.....and i know she is having a hard time breathing... when i took her home...i watched to make sure it would clear up or go away...knowing she probably was so nervous and anxious cause of her unusal settings and there were other dogs there... finally, i couldn't stand to see her gasping for breathe....note, she still manages to eat and drink...everything else...but her gasping and large sound is just way not normal.......... i took her to the german emgenecy vet...mind you, we are stationed her...and onbase vet is closed on weekend....the german vet didn't seem concerned but she tried to check her heart rate.,...unable to because of her loud noises she was making...she was overly excited and just couldn't seem to calm down....the vet finally game a shot of something to make her calm and another to clear out her lungs....unfortunately, it still didn't work...and could not hear anything.....she really was no help....and just prescibed something that will clear her lungs....or easier to breathe.....she wanted me to continue giving antiobiotics... Well, now its 2:30am here in germany...and my poor dog is or sounds like she is suffering.................i have never ever heard her like this nor this lung....i have no idea what triggered the cough or her new conditions and symtoms....i hate to ask my friend...who seemed concerned but really it would not be her fault... anyways, i would have to wait till monday morning...to head to on post vet...right now, the vet said, they will not be open tomorrow..... i dont know what to do....she seems to finally fell asleep...but i can hear her right now, still snorting....its like someone congested and having a hard time breathing...is there anything i can give her besides the meds the vet gave me...i'm so scared that she is totally suffering and will she make it during the eveing...............i don't know what to do...the meds the vet gave me is not working........... help, thank yhou! |

| Welcome to YorkieTalk . You have to let time to the medication to react . It just like in humans when they are sick . |

| I'm so sorry to hear about this. I hope and pray that your little one will pull through this. I would ask your friend if something happened. I would tell her that she wasn't doing that before and you need to know what caused it in order to try to treat her.

| Collapse trachea at this age I would think it would be from an injury or a dog collar being pull pretty hard, but it would not cause fluid build up in the chest. From what you described sounds like a infection in the chest, did the vet do an x-ray of the chest?? if he did it would show like a white cloud some where in her chest area. The antibiotics will clear that up but you must give it until it is finish, do not stop giving the meds just because she sounds better. I go thru this with my Buffy at least 2xs a yr she has a heart murmur and they get chest infections very easy because of the poor blood circulation, and she gets fluid built up also from the heart problem. She also suffers from cronic bronchitis and use to have siver breathing attacks. VERY IMPORTANT: while she is getting this breathing attacks, the ones like a goose honk or gasping for air. You must not leave her unwatched while eating and this happen to me with Buffy one time before her health problems where under control. That is if they get a breathing attack while eating the food can get stuck in the back of the throat. Unable to swallow it or throw it out it cuts off the air. They will not make a sound Buffy just ran in circles and clasp over, I saw the whole thing and ran to her I didn't know what was wrong. Some how I remember CPR and stuck my finger in her mouth to clear the throat and thats when I felt the food, as soon as I pulled it out she took a breath and opened her eyes quit confused about what had just happen. If you have any questions feel free to ask or PM me. Best of Luck!!!

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | Did they say this COULD be kennel cough ?? The symptoms are honking and it can sound like they're gagging...poor baby - I hope it's NOT a CT but there IS a surgery for that if it's in a place they can operate.....GOOD luck but don't rule out the simple things and I hope she gets to feeling better |
