| Stepdaughter almost mamed my dog!!! GRRR! My 8 year old stepdaughter is here for the summer. Well, last night, she wrapped a small rubberband around Annabelle's hind leg, right above her paw. I didn't know she did this. Well, all night, Annabelle was whining and I kept getting up to help her. I took her out, etc. Well, finally, at 3 am, I picked her up and looked all over her and found her paw swollen to 2 TIMES its normal size. I then saw the rubberband. I took it off, and held her and kissed her. I was so freaked out! I thought she might end up losing that foot (I heard of that happening before). So, I stayed up the rest of the morning waiting to see if the swelling went down. She is ok now, but boy, am I PISSED OFF at that little heathen! (She enjoys squashing bugs, if that tells you anything) |

| I've actually heard of this before....my brother in law's brother put one of those little rubber bands that are for braces on their dog's toe growing up and either forgot about it or didn't want to tell anyone about it and the toe got all big and the doctor was going to operate on it to do a biopsy and when he went to do it he saw the little rubberband cutting into the toe! It was so tight he didn't see it. He feels really bad about it to this day and they never let him live that one down! Kids are just curious and don't think about the results!!! Sorry to hear about your little one! |

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | Oh poor baby... time for a little talk with your stepdaughter - Eight is old enough to understand about hurting animals even if out of curiousity...I would think she didn't mean any harm but I'd still sit her down and explain what happened |

| I am SO glad that your furbaby is ok!!! I'm sorry, but the kid sounds like a brat and should be PUNISHED BIG TIME for that. Explain to her (in a harsh tone, but don't attack her) that the dog could have easily lost her foot because of that rubber band. My Dad used a rubber band to make a cat's tail fall off after it was broken pretty bad. He said they used to use this trick on the farm. I'm so mad for you!!! She would be grounded for life if she would have done that to Chloe!

| I agree with that one!! sit her down immediately with her dad and explain to her how things operate with your fur baby in the house!! I hope that she just didn't realize the harm she was causing!! Does she have pets???

| Ooh, I would've woken that child up and had her running all over the house getting ice, towels, anything and everything, to take care of your baby and making her stay up till the swelling went down. Believe me, she would definitely 'think' before touching your baby again!!!

| Oh You are so lucky that you found it when you did, she could of and would of lost her foot if it was on much longer. A rubber band can set and rot it right off. That poor baby. Yes I would set her down and explain to her what she did and what could of happened because of it. |

| This post really concerns me. There is obviously a troubled little girl out there and I hope that you are able to protect your pup but also reach out to this little girl who probably has a lot to deal with if her parents are not together. I hope you are able to explain it to her in a compassionate way, firm yes, but she's only 8 years old and squashing bugs is not the worst thing she could be doing. I'm sorry, I feel sorry for your pup but also for her. |

| Well I am the mom of an (almost) 8 yr old girl and if she ever did this she would receive a serious punishment. Your step-daughter needs to know that we NEVER EVER hurt innocent animals.................that is just not acceptable. Hope you or her dad had a nice little chat w/her. This type of behavior can not afford a warning because the next time it could be around your babies throat. Good luck w/her for the summer - I guess you cant wait for school to get back for her. |

| oh no! you have to teach her that she CANNOT do that! I saw on animal planet once this dog had a swollen neck and his hair was falling out from the neck area and when the doctors examined it, one of the kids put a rubber band around its neck and forgot about it til like weeks later! |

| Well, I confronted her today and she was upset and started crying. She didn't know she was hurting her. I really believed her sincerity. I really think she is just not bright and didn't realize what she was doing. She cried when we were cutting the nails of another dog of ours and the nail bled a little bit, so I know she doesn't enjoy hurting animals. I think she thought she was just putting the rubber band as a bracelet on Annabelle. I iknow she isn't disturbed or anything, she shows no other signs of malice towards animals, etc. |
