my name is wendy i live in the uk and im new to the site, i have a baby yorkie of 16 weeks old called rosie who i love very much shes soooooooo cute and cuddley that when i look at her my heart melts, the only worry i have is that she keeps scratching when i took her to the vets she said it was a skin complaint she was given a injection to stop the scratching which it did for a week but rosie is starting to scratch again so i was wandering before i take her back to the vets if you have any ideas on helping her stop scratching.

Hi, welcome to YT, this is a great place to be! I have heard that yorkies are notorious for skin problems, some are genetic and others aren't. My little girl would itch on occassion until I found out it was the soap I was washing her in. I changed to an oatmeal based bath which really worked - the itching stopped after 2 baths and I never had any other problem with it. If it keeps up I would take her back to the vet and try to find out why she keeps itching, could be allergies. Good luck and keep us posted!

Hi and Welcome to YT! It could be the shampoo you are using. When my Simon was a puppy he itched a lot and I found out it was my laundry detergent and he was allergic to it! Since he slept with me and I carried him around all the time as soon as I switched he was fine! I know that sounds silly but it really could be anything! I can't wait to see pictures!

Hi!! Welcome aboard! We all come here to ask questions so no apologies necessary. The itching could be food, allergies or fleas. Have you ruled any of them out yet? There have been several itching problems on here so I'm confident someone has the right answer.

Congratulations on your baby ! I agree about the shampoo posts also..rinse really really well - residue will cause them to itch also ....

did they look for fleas or mites ?- mites live UNDER the skin and cause excessive scratching ...they also can spread to your home ...not trying to scare you - just another thought

Welcome to YT Wendi and Rosie. Gucci also itches a lot. I started her on Missing Link Supplement. I also change her food to Natural Balance. I will let you know if it works for her. Make sure you check her food that doesnt contain corn or gluten, sometimes those cause allergies. Good luck. Please keep us posted.

Welcome to Yorkie Talk Wenybee!

I was curious what the injection was that the vet said would stop the itching as I have never heard of that. I don't think puppies usually develop allergies until they are a little older. This is what I was told. I would try changing foods and the oatmeal baths.

Good luck!

I know one of you posted you use natural balance food...it seem to cause more itching in my older female. I change her dog food she is doing better. When she does have alot of itching i use benadryl ( but check with your Vet before you give any OC medicines). I know when she is really itchy, she will get on my chest when I'm laying down and stick her butt in my face turn around and look at me like "WELL..ARE YOU GOING TO SCRATCH ME OR WHAT"? ... I know it's time to break out the benadryl..
I would ask your vet if you can use it..until you rule out what maybe causing it. Good Luck to you in finding out what is causing your poor little baby to itch.

I wash all my dogs with oatmeal soap. It's the only one that doesn't make them itch. Did they check your baby for worms. This can cause itching too. Bendaryl works, but check with your vet on the proper amount to give. Welcome to the site.

Hi, a welcome to you and Rosie. Your little girl sounds so sweet and it is always a joy to hear new owners fall in love with their fur babies.

Sometimes if the shampoo isn't rinsed out well from bathing that could cause irritation. Or could be a food allergy, other allergies, some have had to replace thier new carpet as it contained something that caused skin irritation in their Yorkie...There are so many factors that could be taking place.

Fleas maybe? Flea saliva can make a dog go nuts and scratch.

I hope your Rosie gets relief and we hear all kinds of great stories about her.

Feel free to post pictures if you'd like to share.
