Default need advise ASAP

Hi! My name is Janine and I am new to this forum I looked through a couple of pages and it seems pretty interesting. I was wondering if anyone can help me.

I have wanted a small yorkie, for over two years now. I already have a dog and I am ready to purchase a Yorkie. I went to puppy paradise and I found a little baby that I absolutely adore. I am supposed to be picking her up on Thursday, BUT I am not sure how big she is going to be and they can not garuntee her weight. She is currently almost 3 1/2 months and weighs almost two pounds. I am looking for a Yorkie that will not weigh more than 4lbs. I dont want to spend the money and she is not what I am looking for. They say that the dog has up until 18 weeks to grow. I am not sure how big she will get and what to do about getting her. I am getting all different responses from all people and I am now reading that this place is not reputable. I also left a deposit on her and it was not pocket change. Tell me what you would do if you were in my shoes? Also are there any rules of thumb i can go by reguarding weight and age?

Welcome to YT..Here is a growth chart..is will give you an ideal of what she may weigh at different times ...right now looks like she should be about 4lbs.when grown. What size are the parent? Did you see the parent?

http://home.comcast.net/~kkingpdx/puppygrowthchart.html

My pup is about 18 weeks and she is about 47 ozs. It show mine should be about 4.5 lbs. Her parents are 4.5 lbs and 3 1/2 lbs.
Good Luck to you and your new little furbaby

Hi Janine and welcome to yorkie talk!!

What is Puppy Paradise? Is it a pet store? Do you know where they get their puppies? The reason I ask is that a lot of the chain style pet stores get their puppies from puppymills and you wouldn't want to buy a puppy who came from a puppymill. They are bad places, and even if your puppy was fine, you would not want to support the people who run them.

If the pet store gets their puppis from local breeders and you can visit with the breeder and ask the appropriate questions about the puppy, it's parents and siblings, then that's a different story.

I am so glad you found Yorkie talk before you made a firm commitment on this puppy because you can learn a lot here and there is still time.

Can I ask how much they are asking for the puppy? Have you seen the parents or know what they look like? Can you post a picture of the puppy because some of us can tell what the coat will be like and whether the puppy has any breed standard faults, etc. by looking at it. If you could get a few photos of the whole body, and profiles and front views of the face we can tell you a lot.

Good luck and welcome again!

If it's the place I'm thinking of they have about a hundred different breeds. Not somewhere I would get a puppy from.

Puppy Paradise also has rent-a-pet and puppy birthday parties where you can have puppies come over to play with. I have never done business with Ivan from Quality Canines in Brooklyn, but many other people on this forum have and had wonderful experiences.

Hey, this is Janines boyfriend (jack)... im getting her the dog but shes sleeping now anyway i like this forum im glad i found it.

she found this place... they seem knowledgeable, as for puppymillish i dont know b/c im very new to this. i've just read someone say the puppys were sad there ect.. ect., there a puppy mill, but i always say if you didnt experience it dont believe everything you hear.. They do have alot of puppys there, it isn't sparkleing clean (but I havent been to any place that has a large amount of pets that was to tell you the truth) the puppys did not look like they were in any harm. All of them were in a pretty good mood really. but all that aside shes really into the yorkie we saw, she was very energetic, happy, playful, and loving but if she gets too big its not really what were looking for. want her to be in that 4 lbs. range

Im going to look @ that size graph thanks for posting that.

Im going to try to get more info on the parents. and keep you guys posted..

also if we can keep it on topic i dont want to turn this into a thread to bash puppy paradise. I hope be4 thurs i can get some concrete info on the size of the yorkie we want so hopefully we can bring her home and i can post some pics

thanks everyone

Jack - we're only trying to look out for you. Yes, I was bashing Puppy Paradise because they RENT out pets (among other things) That's very wrong and no respectable person would ever do it. I understand your situation and I wish you the best in getting a healthy yorkie from them. Though I would suggest NOT getting a dog there and look elsewhere.

Wherever you get the pup, make sure that you take it immediately to a vet to get a thorough examination including fecal testing!!!!!

WOW, there sure are a lot of breeds!

we accually have an appointment for right after we are/were "picking" her up.

i know you are looking out for me and i REALLY appreciate it. the more imput the better. i wish i looked for a yorkie forum earlier b/c she is asking me alot of ?'s and i wish i could answer all of them. earlier today it clicked in my head to look for a forum.. after we got into this i then notice that they do the renting and i thought it was very strange. i would love to get the puppy out of there if thats the case but in just the little research ive done tonight and your help i am looking at other places. can anyone recommend a good breeder in new york i am also not afraid to travel some to get her.

also we are happy with the yorkie there just there not guarenteeing size for us and that is are main concern.

Any reputable breeder will not be able to guarantee a size for you, AND if anybody did I would really question that.
They can give you an estimate, but as any yorkie owner knows, it is an estimate only and the size of the yorkie grown can differ vastly from that estimate. (Many owners on here can tell you they ended up with a much larger yorkie than was estimated).
As for pup your looking at, I think it will be closer to 5, not 4 pounds.
And I would definately not buy from a place that rents out puppies for parties, that is just wrong! That has to be stressful for the pups.

Hi Jack~

Unfortunately, no one will "guarantee size" and even if they did, all they would do is take your dog back and give you another and you will have fallen totally in love with her at that point.

Puppies continue growing until they get all their adult teeth in which usually happens at about 6 months or 24 weeks, not 18. At that point, they normally stop growing in height and weight but they will fill out.

There are a lot of different "looks" in yorkies. Right now what is "in" and what you should get if you are paying "top" dollar which you probably are since it's a pet store, is a "perfectly proportioned square (same height from shoulder to ground as lengh, base of neck at back to base of tail), legs in proportion, better short than long, an even topline (no roached back), small, erect ears sitting on top of the head, big eyes, a full, silky (not cottony) coat, short snout (no wolf faces), deep black body with rich tan face, no under or overbites, no luxating patellas, a good eater with a great personality and temperament. Would be glad to assess with photos if desired.

The puppymill issue is usually as it applies to the breeding dogs there and not the puppies. If you google puppymills you will see very graphic photos of female dogs who are bred over and over with no break and the horrible consitions in whoch they are kept. It is also because you need to ask a lot of questions of the person who bred the dog if you plan to have this baby a part of your family fo 15 years or more. For example, a puppy gets most of it's personality and temperament from the mother. It's also important to know if the puppy was nursed on mother's milk with colostrum or bottle fed for health reasons. Sometimes mommies who have had c-sections cannot nurse and the puppies are bottle fed and then you need to know if they were given colostrum to help their immune system from some other source.

Anyway, didn't mean to go off on the puppymill tangenet but we are very passionate around here about not supporting them and you will be too once you find out more about them. Maybe your pet store does not have puppymill puppies.

Sounds like you are learning a lot which is great!
