I am scared now kikko might have some now , since i've been keeping them both together and they've both slept with me last night. ..... does anyone know what i should do??!!! i've never had this problem before! i've already started cleaning the sheets on my bed, gave both dogs a bath with anti-tick and flea shampoo ...

| He'll be okay...it's not real unusual to find an occasional tick. Frontline or Advantix will keep them away. |

| Talk to the vet - I am always surprised when people who are very diligent about flea and heartworm protection, forget about ticks. Sometimes people want to use the latest all-in-one product (worms/fleas) and these tend to NOT cover ticks. I am in the human-healthcare field, and for humans, the odds of acquiring Lyme's disease, if the tick is infected, increase if the tick is attached for longer than a day. Your parents may want to speak with their vet about the need for testing their dog - there is a finger-prick bloodtest for Lymes similar to the one for heartworms. Meanwhile, you shouldn't worry about your dog, if you didn't see any ticks on him. I have read up on this, because my Yorkie, bought from a breeder, tested positive for Lymes in a routine screening. Because she was treated before she had any symptoms, the outlook for her is good. People really need to educate themselves about whether Lymes is prevalent in their area (you can find maps of Lyme's distribution on the internet) and if so, choose Flea preventives that also protect against ticks. Oh, and protect your human families too, but being careful in tall grass, tuck pants into socks and check yourself after being in grassy/wooded areas. |

| i totally agree with you regarding testing for Lymes disease. I actually woke up this morning with bug bites on my arms .. i assumed it was from a mosquito but when I saw the tick on baloo i freaked! started looking up all the symptoms... i will be going to the vet tomorrow and ask for the test. thanks for the info and i hope you're baby will be ok .. do keep us posted on her. I think ticks would be pretty common here b/c its really hot and humid here, and mountains surround us.. but they are never outside until yesterday when i decided to take them with me as i walked to my neighbor's house. now i am worried that i didn't get the head completely out (i didn't know it was a tick when i pulled it out of his hair .. boy what a surprise i got right?) thanks everyon for you comments .. i'm still a little worried that there are more .. but i feel better (i gave him like 3 baths) ...both dogs seem oky

| here's a link to the map for Lyme's areas - http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dvbid/lyme/tickmap.htm Your profile says you're in California (or Taiwan? - I have no idea if they have Lyme's disease there!). So yes, there are ticks that carry Lymes there (and there are other diseases they can carry, too). Apparently you have different types of ticks in CA than we have in NJ. Let this be a warning to you to take a look at what you are using and make sure it covers ticks. In fact, maybe you'd like to get something onto your dog today -and your parent's dog, if you think they wouldn't mind. Personally I use Frontline Plus, but people have different preferences. The Advantix smells a bit intense for my liking. |

My furkids Donating Member | Ticks gross me out too! Be careful touching them with bare hands...you should be using a tissue or tweezers or something....you can also get diseases from them. My cousin's dog was just treated for lyme disease..she was one sick dog.

| Ticks are very disgusting, but most ticks do not carry lime disease. The main thing to look for is if the bite looks odd -- like a bullseye -- white in center with a red circle. Don't worry, unfortunately where I live even though we spray the yard and do Frontline Plus -- one or two ticks a year get past all defenses. They are yucky, but I use Benadryl cream on any bites on me or my family. If the bite is where the pup can't lick I use a very small amount of the cream; if it is where they can reach -- I just clean it up and examine it to make sure it doesn't have the bullseye look. http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/diseases/...ymedisease.htm

| We just returned from a couple of days at the CA coast and Bella ended up with 4 TICKS...yes 4!! At first I only found 2..I just let them be until we got home and removed them with a pointed tweezer and gave her a bath...then I checked her again and found 2 more!! Be sure to check their feet and between toes. Where I live we don't have a problem so I didn't worry about protection...live and learn! I will be changing my protection! Also....try and save the tick if possible for testing if needed.

| yes, next time (hopefully there won't be a next time) I will definitely use tweezers .. it was just so unexpected believe me after i realized i washed my hands over and over again. I'm going to the vet today and get treatments for both dogs, just in case... better safe than sorry. I will be looking out on the bite for baloo for that 'bullseye' bite. So do ticks actually bite, like a mosquito or do they only latch on? eeww!! yea everyone has said to save the tick! i was so freaked out so i just flushed it. eew! just thinking of it still creeps me out. hahaha. tamaramay... I am from CA, but currently living in Taiwan

| I just got this email the other day so I am posting it here since I saw this about the ticks. This is not a joke & it works....... A little trick for all you hunters/fisherman/woods walkers etc...... A School Nurse has written the info below -- good enough to share -- And it reaally works!! I had a pediatrician tell me what she believes is the best way to remove a tick. This is great, because it works in those places where it's sometimes difficult to get to with tweezers: between toes, in the middle of a head full of dark hair, etc. Apply a glob of liquid soap to a cotton ball. Cover the tick with the soap-soaked cotton ball and let it stay on the repulsive insect for a few seconds (15-20), after which the tick will come out on its own and be stuck to the cotton ball when you lift it away. This technique has worked every time I've used it (and that was frequently), and it's much less traumatic for the patient and easier for me. Unless someone is allergic to soap, I can't see that this would be damaging in any way. I even had my doctor's wife call me for advice because she had one stuck to her back and she couldn't reach it with tweezers. She used this method and immediately called me back to say, "It worked!" |

| I live in a heavily wooded area of Hunterdon County NJ with lots of deers and other wildlife. In nine years I have only found one deer ticks (carrier of Lymes) on any of my animals or people alike. The most common tick offender is the dog tick. Gross but pretty harmless. No matter what I do my dogs still get ticks. You name the anti-tick agent and I have probably tried it multiple times. I live on over and acre of land so spraying is not an option, plus I do not want to harm local wildlife. The only way I can be 100% sure my dogs are tick-free is to check them everytime they come into the house and after a walk. Which is no easy task since my dogs LOVE to be outside. I carry tweezer and rubbing alchol with me on walks. The rubbing alchol is to sterilize the tweezers not required but I want to anyway. The BEST way to remove a tick is to grasp the body firmly with a tweezer and pull. If part of the head remains is it okay. The body will naturally work the head out. By getting the body off of your pet the tick can not regurgitate the contents of its stomach back into the host (pet or human's body) so disease can not occur. Trying to smother the tick with oil, butter, or soap will cause the tick to regurgitate and then drop off. Which means what ever was in the tick stomach is not in your love one. My dogs get the Lymes Disease vaccine every year but unfortunately it is not 100% effective. Diligence is best. An ounce of pervention is worth a pound of cure. |
