| Not real sure what to do about it, but Cesar Milan says if you're holding and cuddling them when they are afraid, you are reinforcing their fear. Maybe try playing fetch or treats or somthing to get her mind off the storm.

| None of my 7 that I have now are afraid of thunder, but my first little girl, Tashee was terrified and would shake and try to hide. My husband always called her "First Alert" as she would start to growl when she heard the thunder long before we did. I guess I reinforced her fears as I would hold and try to comfort her, poor little things! |

| Phoebi is scared to death of thunder and lightning! She'll hear it coming long before we do and start pacing the house. I've tried everything from medication to playing a CD of thunder and lightning to try and desensitize her. The best thing we've found now is to just let her go to her safe "spot"....under the living room end table and wait it out.

| Layla has never been afraid of thunder or lightning. The day we got her we drove 9 hours home with her in a thunder and lightning storm... so she is neither bothered by long car rides or storms |

| Lexi is the only one of my 3 who is petrified of storms and I have not found any way to distract her or console her so we just wait it out. I feel really bad if we're not at home when it thunders. |

| I had a Jack Russell terrier that went NUTS whenever it stormed, it was simply horrible. But my sweet little Rexy and Rowdy are completely unaffected by the noise. I am so grateful. I also had a schnauzer who was scared of storms. He didn't go nuts, but would go into the closet (no windows) so he didn't have to see the lightening, during a storm. He was pretty smart.

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | Eddie is terrified of thunder. He hides under the bed and refuses to come out. He ran away once on the Fourth of July when he heard fireworks (I will NEVER forgive my dog-sitting mother-in-law for allowing it!). I read something recently on the Net that said fear of noises like that is hereditary, and there's nothing you can do about it short of tranquilizing them. I'm not sure I believe it, but I haven't found a way to get him comfortable around loud noises. Jack, on the other hand, can care less.

I believe that is probably true - I know my JRT went nuts from the first storm when he was just a baby. Like Eddie, there was nothing that could console him. I know he was never exposed to any sudden noxious noise prior to the storm. It is an awful affliction though. I feel very sorry for dogs/animals that have to suffer it.

| Alyssa and thunder My Alyssa is scared to death of thunder. She hears it long before we ever hear it and either starts growling or barking while pacing around in the house. We know it is about to come a storm just from her behavior. Between the barkings she will come to me and try to be close to my body. My Emmy barks just because Alyssa is barking. She has no clue why she is barking and is not afraid of thunder. Alyssa also brings her favorite toys and will put them close to me. I guess she feels like I am the protector and her toys need protection too. I can only imagine what she must go through when it storms and I am not home. |
