| At what age does training really count? I want to teach Luna all the basics like sit, stay, come... but I wanted to know when is the best time for her to learn them and most importantly retain them. I've heard that a dog's brain doesn't stop developping till after 12 weeks or a little more, meaning that they will learn best after then... but I'm not to sure? So far, I've only been strict with the no biting and housebreaking. She's been pretty on target with going pee every time we walk her. I really think if she does have accidents inside it's completely human error since she would probably need to be walked more since she can't really hold it in yet. So, I started walking her every hour yesterday and we managed to only have one pee and one poo inside, and that was because we skipped those hours. Do you think she is learning to go every hour? Who knows...? lol... ok ok I will stop here before I keep going... lol thanks everyone!

| Training starts from DAY ONE!!! In fact, Otis's puppy training school wouldn't accept dogs beyond 6 months. So start now! I don't know where you are located, but a great puppy school I really enjoyed attending with Otis is called "Sirius Puppy Training." Many classes are given in the Northern California area. Not only is training important, but socialization is extremely important when they are puppies. Expose your Yorkie to as many people/dogs as possible (but make sure she's got all her shots and vaccinations first.) |

| It's never too early, you've helped her develop some good habits if she already knows to pee outside on walks! Just keep at it and reward her when she does good, praise (either verbal or with treats) is VERY effective! |

| Thank you for your replies!! I wanted to enroll Luna in a puppy school, everyone has told me that is the best thing to do, especially since I am a first time dog owner. I live in FL in the Miami area. I don't know what would be a good school to go to. There is one at my local PetSmart but I'm not sure if it's really good or not. I wish I could have a personal trainer come over for the same price I would pay to go to the puppy school but I don't think I can find that. Then again, truth is, I haven't really looked around. Tiss tiss, I've got puppy homework to do... lol

If you decide on classes, make sure you ask for a class where the majority of the dogs are smaller breeds, so your Yorkie doesn't feel intimidated. | |

| We've been trying to socialize Luna A LOT! Our neighbors have dogs so whenever we bump into each other I never fail to let them smell each other and what not. I also take Luna out with me when I go shopping or running errands. So far, every store has allowed her in. Even Nine West shoe store, hehe. Going back to the training, I have to really look around. Everyone says something different when it comes to training. I.E. my cousin insists that I don't give Luna treats when she goes potty in the right place, saying that then she will ALWAYS ask for treats after going potty. Then others on here say one should ALWAYS give treats after going potty in the right place. It's like, ok so what am I really suppose to do? lol I guess what matters is that you take care of your pup to the best of your ability and train them to work with your schedule and needs...Also, I guess I won't really know completely until I find a puppy school.

| I always give my pups treats when they get something right even pottying. I've got 6 dogs that will go to a potty pad and come to me to recieve a treat cause they know they did right.

| I think we're going to have to train Luna to use the potty pads. We have a house full of people that aren't use to walking dogs and we forget to walk her sometimes, thus she has accidents. Another thing is if we're out at night, and she has to go, she sometimes goes in her play pen. Like I have already mentioned, I notice that it really is completely our fault for all of Luna's accidents because when I'm home all day and have the time to take her out she only has 2 accidents a day, as oppose to 5-6, she is really good about going outside if we take her often. If fact she goes the moment she hits grass. It's pretty neat! lol, if only we'd do it more often!!! As for the other types of training, which is what the post was really about lol, I've still been working on sit. She'll stay sitting when she knows I have treats. If I say sit at random, she'll sit sometimes. So we gotta work more on that lol...

| Ranger learned how to sit and mastered it by 12 wks. You really have to be persistent and patient! When I taught Ranger I would say Sit and using a treat move it over his head forcing him to sit. Once his bottom hit the floor I would say “Good Boy, Sit” and give him the treat. I would walk a few feet so he would no longer be sitting and repeat. This went on for about 10-20 minutes and I would stop. I repeated the same thing the next day for about 10 minutes. After a few days he got it, but then he had to be weaned off of expecting a treat every time. Now he will sit on command with or without a treat!! He is now 5 months and knows sit, lie down, sit up, stand, speak, and shake. We are currently working on stay and come, but with holidays coming up it might be a while . Good Luck!! |

| So far Luna is getting the hang of sitting... I'm working on stay. She sits sometimes without treats but if she sees the treats she'll sit every time I say sit. I'm trying to wean her off the treats too by giving her treats sometimes and other times not. So we'll see.

| As early as you can , start training! Mine learned sit, stand, dance, lie down, crawl, shake hands, beg all in one week. The hardest thing is stay! She just doesn't get it. When she is outside, I just yell :come: and she comes like a bat out of hell. It's really funny to see! Pat |

| Ahia and Buckeye don't shake hands they "give five" and speak is "say hi". we are the 3 stooges! we do things entirely different. it was funny watching me teach Buckeye to say hi. I would say "say hi" and then bark. then i would tell him to say hi again. it didn't take him long before he was saying hi. he tries to fool me by looking the other way real slow and then jumping at me quickly like he barked. and then i would say "not good enough". then he would slowly turn his head away then quickly bark at me. they learn quicker and at an earlier age then you think they would. i don't think it is ever too earlly to teach them things.
