Shipping Puppies Is it just me, or are other people here uncomfortable with the idea of shipping pets in airplanes. I know of animals who have died in transit! Please, if you are considering a puppy, try to find a breeder you can drive to!

I agree with you, though I have no experience and am not Knocking anyone else for doing it. My Tiah just had her third litter. I have been questioned about shipping the puppies. I always say "No". I can't imagine it for the seller or the buyer or the puppy. I am honest about it though and never say, "I'll check it out and get back to you". I know others do it and it works for them, I am just too afraid.

Most breeders have no problem shipping today because the cabins are pressurized and temperature controlled and the puppies are treated very well by the flight crew and the baggage people. I agree it is not the BEST, but if you wait until the puppy is a little older, at least three months, and it is a direct flight, the shorter the better, it's as if they were flying with you. I had Princess Chai flown from Texas. She was so sweet when we picked her up and she wasn't scared or shaking or anything like I expected. Her breeder had made her crate very cozy with her favorite blanket, toy and food and water. She was only 2 lbs and 15 weeks at the time. I think it was a three hour flight, but she had to be checked in an hour before takeoff so she was in the crate for four hours. I was there when she arrived and the flight was early so we lucked it. It was sooo smooth. I had offered to come get her but the breeder said it was perfectly safe that the only problem she had ever encountered with shipping a puppy was when a flight was delayed and the pilot ended up putting the little chihuahua in his pocket for the rest of the flight. He almost didn't give the puppy up when they arrived at their destination, he had fallen so in love with him!!!

Shipping Puppies When I was looking for my girls, I really respected breeders who refused to ship their puppies. It made me feel that they really cared about their animals and yes, I was a bit disappointed when I found one in NY or Calif and I was in Fl. Eventually I found the right yorkies for me, within driving distance. I cannot imagine my Lacey ever flying, anytime there's a loud noise I can find her in my closet, in the corner, shaking like a leaf.

,,,my puppy was shipped via airplane from Mississippi to NJ and he was perfectly fine when I picked him up at 13 wks. from the airport. Continental Airlines prides themselves on shipping thousands of animals by plane each day, and the accommodations are very good. The staff that handles the animal cargo suggests that dogs do better on planes when they are atleast 3 months old. No dog can be shipped without a certificate of health, and the staff who handles the animal cargo are very experienced at what they do. The animals are the first passengers to exit the plane and they are driven to the terminal in their own special Pet Taxi Van. Although I agree that planes are not the most ideal mode of transportation, I do believe that as long as the dog is being shipped to a safe and loving home, that is the most important thing...the airplane ride will be well worth it!

I've had 3 puppies over the last few years shipped to me and every one of them arrived healthy & well taken care of. Th airlines definately pride themselves on taking good care of your puppy. All of them were 3 months old before they were shipped. I also spoke at length with their breeders on the phone for weeks prior and they were all very concerned and kept in touch to make sure they arrived safely and asked for pictures to be emailed regularly.

Although I would never ship or have a yorkie shipped, I did have our ddb pup shipped to us. He was 3 months old and weighed 25lbs when we got him though. And the only reason he was shipped was because ddb breeders are few & far between

Don't you think her being scared of loud noises and going in your closet is a problem? Bella has flown and she is never afraid of noises and doesn't hide in closets.

I hope this doesn't offend you. It is not my intention. I simply want to use your logic and apply it differently to make a point. The only thing different you have mentioned about a baby who is shipped by plane as oposed to picked up and driven home in a car is the different vehicle or method of transportation. Even if you hold the puppy in the car, instead of keeping it safely in it's crate for the car ride home, it is still emotionally "traumatized" in your eyes I assume because it is being handled by people it has never seen before. This is assuming the buyers have not visited the puppy before, and, in most cases, this is the way it occurs I believe. I don't view it that way. I think all yorkies love people and, if they are properly socialized, new people are not traumatic or something to fear. I don't think puppies who leave their mothers and their siblings and wind up in a new home know whether they got there by plane or car. JMHO I got my first baby locally and I was by myself when I went to look at him for the first time and pick him up so he rode in the crate all the way home in my van. I did spend an hour and a half with the breeder at her home while she eplained all the written instructions and trained me on caring for a yorkie. My second puppy was shipped to me and arrived happy, and wiggly and kissing on the other end...happy to see us! I had had many conversations on the phone with the breeder and corresponded by email and spoke to her vet prior to her arrival. The breeder refused to ship until she was a solid 2 lbs and 15 weeks old. | |
