We are just East of Plano. I think you are near Ft. Worth? I would love the name of your vet, maybe they could recommend someone closer?

So happy I could help. Yes, the internet is a very, very small world. Holler at me anytime. I'm just over the hill, (travel distance and age).

Hi Laura,
Did your vet give you med to worm your young puppies with at 2 and 4 weeks of age? Mine never has. It is said to be careful with over the counter wormers. I have never had a problem. I have spoken to 3-4 different vets and they all said to dock tails at 2-3 days (before the cartlg. develops more). They all do things differently, but the good thing is the result of a good healthy puppy! I hope you find a vet that you can be happy with...that is a job.

They wanted me to call at two weeks to get wormer, they go by weight and did not want to guess? I guess that is good. They aren't horrible, I just always get the feeling that they consider yorkies "under 25 pounds" It kinda freaks me out, especially when they were only 2 and 3 pounds. That is almost like the difference in a 20# baby vs. 250# adult???

I know what you mean!! How many litters has your girl had? Tiah has had 3. 5 puppies the first time; 2 puppies the second time; 4 puppies the third time. She is a WONDERFUL mama and and AWSOME pet! I keep her and the puppies (every litter) in my bedroom. By now you would think I had 4 babies myself...I look terrible! Haven't really slept since the night they were to be born. I worry sooooo much the first few days about an "accident". Being smothered and such. Sometimes they cry and its because they have rolled onto their backs and can't seem to get back over. Anyway, hopefully sleep will come tonight.

You know what I bet no one realizes Laura? The fact that you loose your "pet" to the puppies for a short while. Tiah loves me to death, but now (of course) her priority is her puppies. As soon as she comes in from going out to pee, she runs right to the bedroom door and pushes it open to want in with her babies. I miss her even though she is right here with me. She will give me a minute here or there just to be nice....you know how it is I'm sure.

Default Books

Do you know of any good books to start reading up on breeding? Rylee is only 4 months, and if I do decide to breed her, I want to know everything I possibly can when the time comes.

I have a wonderful book titled "BREEDING A LITTER" ...The Complete Book of Prenatal and Postnatal Care..by BETH J. FINDER HARRIS. It is wonderful, even has samples to use for different selling and "no breed" agreements. Check ebay. You'll probably find it there.

Julz - this is her first - 5 pups. She is a great mother, and you are right about loosing your baby to her babies. I am not sure if I will let them mate again. Right now, I am giving one to my girlfriend and planning to keep the rest. Now, I don't even want to give her one (I'm horrible). Did you ever see the movie "The Retrievers" a family sells their litter of golden retrievers, goes crazy missing them, and goes to get them all back. It is cute.

We have the male and female, at about 4 weeks they began this horrible vicious fighting. We have had to keep them separated ever since. I have become a slave to the pups, they both want me to be with them all the time. When we accidentally let them together, they may be fine for a little, then they get this look in their eyes - staring each other down, and attack. They hurt each other and bleed. So I move them from room to room, cage to cage, backyard, and on and on all day!

I want my two lovable sweet babies back - to follow me from room to room, in and out, up and down. (Of course, now I will have 6 -or 7) I shouldn't say that, I am sure my girlfriend will be here sometime soon

That is the best, I read so much stuff - it scared me to death. Zowie did such a good job, it was a breeze. But I think I would have been ok if something had happened - I had my plans, vets # by the phone, etc. The worry just before they have them, I was really stressing. I don't think I realized how much until a day or two afterwards.

Oh my goodness Laura! You are planning to keep 4 puppies! I have to chuckle at that. I know the temptation, THAT IS FOR SURE!!! My first litter I was TERRIBLE about selling. I named every one of them (and still do according to personality) and cried (felt like a total goofball!) when the people were STILL HERE knowing they were taking one of my babies! However......you can't imagine them leaving you when they are born...nor when they are 2 weeks old...definetly not at 4 weeks old...by 5 weeks they all have personalities and you have little nicknames for them...6 weeks you know somehow you have to find a way to keep them all....but then they turn 7 weeks old. I think it is God's way of helping you to let them go...they start fighting with each other and demanding a LOT of individual attention. More than you can possibly put out in a day consisting of only 24 hours. Lets see how it goes for you and let me know if my week by week analysis resembles any realism in your case too.

Am hoping for that a little, too. about 20 years ago, my American Eskimo had babies, talk about a cute lot, they are like BIG white fuzz balls with giant eyes. When they started eating, they would climb into the food, walk allover each other. ICK! It required a full bath for 6 big pups at each meal, complete with blow drying. They would climb out of the box and poop 100 times in five minutes before going back to bed. I couldn't get rid of them fast enough. Mommy was so tired ofthem, she would walk around withthem all hanging on her. She would put her front paws on the couch and jump, they would fall in a little pile below. Took me this long to consider doing it again. lol
