| Barking? Just last week, little 7 week old Saddie began barking. I found this unusual because most dogs I've dealt with don't start barking at 6 weeks (she was 6 weeks when I heard her first bark). She generally barks while shes about to playfully attack my foot or hand...its actually pretty funny because she looks like a clumsy kitten when she does it. But I was wondering is it normal for a Yorkie to start barking at such a young age? |

| Cosmo barked at like 9 or 10 weeks. I got him when he was almost 9 weeks but he was sick so he might have barked before that. I dont want to teach him that barking is okay all the time becuase I dont want to annoy the neighbors but the sound is soo adorable. He always barks when he wants my attention or grawls a little while we are playing it is soo cute.

| i didnt bring bunny home until she was 12 weeks, but hwen I would call my breeder she would put the phone up to Bunny and get her all excited and she would bark & bark! I was so cute! So... I think it sounds like Sadie is just a happy little vocal baby!

| I don't want to put a damper on the puppy barking fun, but I made a rule right away. As cute as their barking is at that age, that is what makes yappy dogs. It is not as cute a year from now when they constantly want your attention and bark to get it. You can't have a conversation with your friends or family and the neighbors dont like it. No barking - even playing. Our dogs are over a year now - it is nice - our friends and neighbors say things like 'I always thought Yorkies were yappy dogs' - but they don't have to be. One of my friends gave away an adorable min-pin for being a yapper. She couldn't take it anymore. Sorry, I do think their puppy barks are adorable, just try to enjoy and say 'no'.

| Laura- you are exactly right! I guess I should have clarified better... Bunny barked when she ws at the breeders BEFORE she came home. We don't tolerate barking in our house either. Tino is a year old and I can count on one hand the amount of times he has barked since I trained him not to. I used the method that I read in a book ... since I potty trained him with an ex pen, when he would bark, I would not let him out and I would not look at him and would totally ignore him, but when he was quiet I would praise him and give him a treat. And he is NOT a barker. I live in a condo and there is no way I could still be friends with my neighbors if my dogs barked. We are doing the same thing with Bunny. SHe is more vocal than Tino was, but we just turn our backs to her and don't give into her when she barks and for the most part we are having luck.

| my dog is 4 months old and is just now figuring out to get my attention he needs to bark. Especially while I am eating!! What do I do to get him to stop? I just ignore him, but he stops and then comes back and starts again?

| Again, sorry about that, I just remember how cute it is, and how my sons wanted to show me they could make the bark. It is adorable, but I have known a lot of people who didn't think it was so cute later. We just got a new neighbor dog who stays outside all the time. Bronx has decided to join him in barking. Ugh, it is not cute now. I take a newspaper and smack it on the wall, sometimes on my leg (ouch!). He runs to the patio and falls over with his feet up in the air. - Now THAT is cute! I will have to get a picture of him doing that.

| The book that I read says that you have to train them the way that their canine mom would and that in the "pack" if they were barking their mom would just ignore them and turn their back to them and make no eye contact. so if I am eating or working on the computer and they come up and bark, I turn my back to them so that there is no eye contact. This method says that if you are verbal to them in anyway then you are giving in to them bc you are showing them attention, which the goal of them barking at us is to get our attention. So under no circumstances can you acknowledge their barks. By ignoring them you are signaling that I can't hear you or see you when you do this. Now, I have no idea what anyone else will say about this method of training, but all I can say is that I had never had a dog, any dog before I got Tino so I read some books from Barnes & Noble when I got him and this is what it said to do and this is what worked for me. I am no dog trainer or behavior expert... this is just my personal experience.

| I'll try, my pups are not so photogenic as some of you guys. You pull out the camera and they want to see it! If I say their name for them to look, they come. Of course, if I really want them to come, they dont. Must be my tone, I will have to listen to myself.

| I agree about the incessant barking and not wanting a yappy dog, but I have trained my dogs to bark on command, and, because they are service dogs, they also bark at certain sounds to alert me. I trained them to do this by saying "speak " whenever they barked as puppies and praising them or rewarding them with a treat when they did it. Now that they know what speak means, it's easy to say "No speak!" when I don't want them to bark. Yorkies are great watch dogs and they bark when they see strangers in my yard. I allow them to bark a couple time then I reassure them that everything is okay and I ask them to go lay down. I do not want them not to bark at all because dogs can save your life in an emergency that might occur when you are sleeping or in another part of the house. It is also a safety matter for themselves. Hefner was accidentally locked out of the house once, and if he hadn't barked, I would not have known. Hefner also alerted me one night when the cat was outside and hadn't been let in before we went to bed. We have coyotes and she might not have survived the night. Chai was shut in a bedroom recently and when I realized she was missing we called for her and she barked to tell us where she was. Anyway, just another point of view. |

| One more thing I wanted to say with regard to the barking... If Tino and Bunny get scared or hear a strange noise then they do bark and its okay and I look to see what has upset them. I just wanted to clarify that bc I know that dogs need to bark to warn us of danger, etc... I was talking about the annoying yapping that the neighbors would complain about!

| Kim- Just the point I wanted to clarify! I guess we were posting at the same time. Not a different point of view, just something I forgot to mention when I was talking about the way that I trained Tino and Buny... since TeddyBear was asking about her Yorkie barking while she was eating, I just assumed she wasnt talking about a warning/danger bark! I don't think any amount of training would prevent Tino from barking if he was locked outside or in a room away from Mommy! Debarking probably wouldnt even work!

| I am going to agree there - my babies bark when someone is at the door, and Bronx loves to bark at the birds and scare them away. I let him do that, he sorta sneaks up on them and barks at the last minute (it is cute). I say "ok, ok - you scared them". We did have an incident yesterday - my husband said he thought someone was at the door he could hear both dogs going crazy. Zowie seldom barks. It turned out Bronx was outside at the front door. Don't know how he got out (I was at the store), but he is the sneaky one.

| I know how hard it is to have a yappy dog. Gucci only barks when she hears a noise in the hallway of our apt bld. Anyhow, last week a very rude neighbor almost brake my door down cause Gucci was barking. I told her she was barking cause she heard the other neighbor opening the door. SHe came so nasty at me I said "you need to train your dog not to bark cause im no having it". I told her she is a dog and she doesnt barks all the time just when she hears a noise. Is being so hard cause now when Gucci barks Im paranoid. I tell her no bark, spray bottle her and even bang on the wall. But that makes her barks more. I have to carry her and tell her no bark and pet her and then she stops. |
