How Big of a Pup Will a Hawk Get?

Okay, my dad thinks that a hawk won't bother their 2 lb 10 oz puppy.... As many horror stories as I have heard, can anyone offer any insight on this? My mom and I think she should stay on the leash, so that way if something happens, we at least have a chance to help her..... Any advice? Thanks!

Not sure but look at it this way, they eat rabbits and your pup is smaller than a rabbit.

the dog on a leash, that is a very tiny pup and why take the chance? Charlie and Henry are now at 6 months 4lb12oz and 5lb2oz and I would not worry so much but at their 10-12 week weight of 3lb11oz, I was terrified! and I am not even near wooded area...

A hawk will definitely bother the 2lb 10oz puppy. It will carry her away if it has the chance. I have known large hawks to snatch up large cats 4-5 times the size of your parents' puppy. A leash will make a difference, but she should still be under very, very close supervision. You're right, there are way too many horror stories, and accidents can happen all too quickly.

A hawk took my friends yorkie out of her backyard. I think he was about 5-6 lbs. We keep Murfee on a leash and he is 5.5 lbs. Don't want to take a chance.

Yes, it is exactly what you are thinking. I saw her about a week after it happened and every time she saw Murfee she would start crying. She is in Vegas and I'm in Texas so don't see her often. She was devestated

I am so sorry, I think I would die...Charlie doesn't even like the crows around us, they squak and he hunches and looks up...Did she ever get another puppy?

My daughter has a 3pound yorkie and they were at my house a couple months ago and Lily was outside (fenced in puppy yard) and I happened to notice a hawk sitting on the fence post, needless to say we scooped up Lily and brought her in. It was pretty scarry situation and I am glad I saw it.

A hawk flew into a screened deck after my father's two...6 and 5 pounds at the time. Now I don't know if the hawk could have carried them off, but that didn't stop it from trying. Aside from carrying it off, their talons are large enough to do serious damage. If your father's dogs is only 2 pounds, I'd definately say that is snack size.

where do you generally find hawks? I am in WI and live on the corner of a main street with alot of traffic...What attracts them?

Thank god im in ireland and dont have to worry about such thing as hawks. Its other dogs mostly strays I have to worry about here. My Boots thinks she is a doberman and will have a go if they have a go at her. lol
Yep I would definitly keep her on a leash, espically when she is so young, as you know puppys are so carefree.

Urban legend on my street is that a neighbor a few streets over was walking his Yorkie on a leash when a hawk scooped down on him. They were able to keep a hold on the dog, but the hawk did serious damage. Guess the best answer is always keep your eyes glued on the pup!

Hawks are every place. We live in the country now but lived in the city for 30 years and just before we moved there was a hawk in our backyard. Remember not too long ago there was all that talk about the nawks in NYC.
