New Yorkie Pup need tips for night time SLEEP!

My name is Robyn and our family just got a new YT this weekend and my son named him Dewey. He is 7 weeks old and we got him from a wonderful Breeder in Portsmouth, Ohio. Our first night was great. Dewey however last night Barked all night so none of us got any sleep! Oh well. I know it's just like a new baby. But since this is our 1st yorkie does anyone one have great tips for night time sleep? And great tips for potty traing. So far we have only had 3 accidents.

Congratulations on your new baby. I can only comment on the way I'm training Maggie. She is now 14 weeks old. I got her when she was 8 weeks. She is being crate trained, (only at night). During the day, she is under constant supervision. If she cannot be supervised, then she is placed in her playpen, but only for short periods of time. When we first got her, I would take her outside to do her business every hour during the day and every 2 hours at night, AROUND THE CLOCK. Of course, when she was asleep, I DID NOT wake her to take her outside. She normally naps during the morning and also the afternoon for about 3 hours each. Gives me a break to do my chores and piddle on Yorkie Talk. It was hell, but paying off now. Not everyone can do this. I'm retired, so I have the time now. Now that she is older, she sleeps 6 hours at a time at night. Her crate is in my bedroom. When she whimpers, (usually around 1AM) I get up, take her outside and put her back in the crate. She is normally up for the morning around 6:30AM. Whichever method you choose, the key is to get them on some type of schedule, (eating, playtime, bedtime, etc.) and stick with it until they are trained. It will greatly benefit yourself and your baby. Here is a site that may help you with crate training questions:

I remember those 1st few nights, I ended up letting mine sleep in the bed with me, they were quiet and slept like a baby.

Here are a 2 tips I've heard that can help if you want him to sleep in his own area.

Put one of your old shirts, or something with your scent in his bed so he feels close to you while laying down at night.

Place a clock or something that has a constant steady tick noise so he may think its a heart beat.

Aren't Yorkies puppies just adorable!?!? It will get better...as far as house training goes, you have to decide if it will go on a pad or outside. You can't do both. As your other response mentioned, it takes a lot of time and effort to get them to go outside but the payoff really is great. A new puppy has to pee EVERY time it gets up from a nap. NEVER play with your puppy outside (if the outside method is what you choose) until it totally understands what it is supposed to do out there (consistantly). Also, as the other person mentioned, a crate is a wonderful thing. It is not a prison and should never be treated like one. It is a confined safe area just like you would want for a baby. Yorkie puppies always seem to be on what I call a "death mission". They are very full of life and want to get into more stuff than you ever knew you had. You have to watch them extremely close!!!!!! The darndest things can be fatal to a little puppy...plants, sponges, one little dropped pill on the floor you couldn't find, etc. They aslo have NO fear. Be very careful when you have them up on something or holding them...most of them think that being in mid-air is quite fun. If your puppy is a squiggler when being held, only let people hold it while sitting on the floor. It is important to teach your pup to be still when being held. Your little puppy needs a good soft stuffed animal for a more peaceful night for all. A clock that makes a ticking sound will also be helpful very close by. Your puppy is a little young to have left its mother and siblings and you will have to be patient. Did you know that Yorkie puppies need naps? You can't let them run and play as long as they would want (which is very fast and long) it can affect their sugar level and they can become lathargic. Oh, I hope I'm not running on and on too much, I just want to be of some help. Good luck and keep us posted. A Yorkie is a brave little faithful friend for life! I am just new to this forum as of yesterday (I am the one who's Yorkie had 2 red puppies in her litter). The people here seem so friendly and helpful! So here's one new person welcoming another!

I had the same problem with Romeo for about a week. Until I cam to YT. Then I tried people suggestions... The TICKING CLOCK and shirt works !!!!

I would love for Maggie to sleep with me. This is where I need advice. When she is laying on the recliner with me, she is flipping and flopping. I've tried to nap with her, but she is constantly changing positions. I'm afraid I will roll on her, or she will flop right off the bed. Our bed is quite high off the floor. About waist high. Right now she is napping in a chair beside me, and is still as a mouse. I even took this great advantage to clip the hair at the corner of her eyes and also clip the hair around her feet. She never budged, but if you lay down with her, it takes her forever to find just the right spot.

I also suggest walking,, and keep a constant eye on them,,, out of sight is when accidents happen,, I didnt have any problems with sleeping,, I got a good sleeper! He will sleep as long as I sleep. YEAH!!

hey, im i the same boat.. Im a new yorkie mommy since saturday!, hes just the cutest, and i tried making him sleep no in the bed, but yeah, that didnt work.. he has slept in my bed for two nights and he is sooo good about it, but i dont want him to get used to sleeping in the bed.. is it ok to make him sleep in a play pen? I have one of those crates that he came in from the airplane...but that is too small, right?
and as for potty training, what do you do if hes not trained, and you have to be out of the house for 8 hrs at a time?? I mean, i have to work.. i have no choice?
id like him to pee outside, but lately we have been working on the pee pad.. yeah, thats not working well..
its making me sad that he has accidents everywhere

Congratulations Dena on your new baby. Training takes a lot of time, patience, and love. Sounds like you are going to be a great mother. Working outside the home can be difficult. Training still works, but it will just take a little longer. I would not crate train the baby during the day, if nobody is going to be home. The playpen or exercise pen would be a better choice. Bed, toys, food, water and a wee wee pad at one end. Playpen or exercise pen will also keep them safe from chewing on things that could hurt or kill them. Do not let the baby have roam of your home unless you can watch every move and be able to react when they get to smelling around. The first thing to do is get a schedule that everyone can live with. If you crate train at night, you should only give the baby enough room to stand, turn around and lay down. Anything bigger, they will use leftover space for a bathroom. Also, crate training will require you to take the baby outside during the night to use the bathroom. Depending on the age, anywhere from every two hours to maybe only once. They will cry to let you know. Sometimes it's better if you put the crate in your bedroom. Cover it with a sheet or blanket to make it feel more like a cozy den. The baby feels more secure being close to you, and you will be able to hear them cry. If you don't respond to their bathroom cry, they will potty in their bed. That can be a real mess. If they cry right after you take them outside to pp or poo, then they only want to be let out to play and not sleep. Here is a link that may help you further in your crate training. I love reading posts like that, I get so much information.

I pick up my new baby Friday after work and I can't even begin to describe my excitement level. But I'm also eager to start tackling the training issues, like taking him outside and teaching him when it's ok to go to the bathroom. I'm planning on crate training at night and then leaving Tucker in a playpen during the day with a pad. When he's older, I might start leaving his crate open so he can choose to either sleep there or up in the bed with me but I'll have to play that one by ear.

I just went home to check on him on my break.. I have left him in my bathroom, with tv on really loud so he can hear it, and nothing on the ground for him to chew or eat except his food/toys/ and the pee pad... and he did his business on the pad!!!! yeah, that just made my day -=o)
I need to get a play pen, hopefully tonight... any suggestions? should i actually go to a babystore? i dont want to spend lots of money but i need one asap.. maybe wal-mart?

Dena, I bought an exercise pen at Petsmart. It also doubles for a playpen outside. I don't allow Maggie to run loose in our fenced yard, because we have hawks. The exercise enclosure we got Maggie is like a honey comb heavy duty plastic. You can shape it almost any shape you want. It has 8 two ft. panels. I so happy I could help. I'm not a pro by a long shot, but I like to pass on things I have learned the hard way.
